Marek’s disease (MD) has a high economic impact in poultry production worldwide. MD consists of several pathologic syndromes of which the most commonly encountered are lymphoproliferative syndromes such as acute MD. Sporadically, MD leads to central nervous system syndromes characterized by non-neoplastic brain pathology. In this case report, an onset of neurological signs on two different broiler farms, housing ‘slow-growing’ Hubbard JA 757 broilers, is described. On the first farm, clinical signs were observed from 42 days of age onwards and on the second farm, respectively from 42 (stable 1) and 30 days (stable 2) of age onwards. The neurological symptoms consisted of acute central nervous system signs, which started with flaccid neck paralysis. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal perivascular cuffing of CD3 positive mononuclear cells in the brain tissues. These findings pointed towards the development of transient paralysis. qPCR analysis confirmed the diagnosis. In broiler flocks, which only have a limited life span, vaccination is not common practice. In flocks of slow-growing breeds, outbreaks of MD might become more important again. Therefore, vaccination of slow-growing broilers against MD seems recommended.

In this paper, proliferative necrotizing otitis externa is described in two young cats. The lesions were characterized by proliferative, erosive to ulcerative dermatitis with necrosis affecting the medial aspect of the pinna, the entrance of the ear canal and the periaural skin of both ears. The lesions developed rapidly and were covered by adherent crusts. Histopathology of the lesions was characterized by severe epidermal hyperplasia, with parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, scattered apoptotic keratinocytes in the epidermis and superficial hair follicle epithelium, and serocellular crusts. In both cases, regression of the lesions appeared after systemic and topical immunomodulatory therapy.

A seven-year-old, female ring-tailed lemur was referred for progressive non-ambulatory paraplegia. A computed tomographic (CT) scan of the whole body revealed multifocal lytic lesions involving multiple vertebrae and several pathological vertebral fractures. Necropsy and histopathology identified pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis. The imaging and histopathological findings resemble chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis described in human medicine.

Scedosporium apiospermum, an emerging opportunistic fungus, is increasingly implicated with serious invasive mycoses in immunocompromised patients. Rare occurrence and difficulty in identification of this species complicate the management of infection in dogs. In the present report, the characterization of a Scedosporium apiospermum isolate obtained from a dog’s skin wound is described. Identification was obtained through macroscopic and microscopic examination of the cultured isolate and by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene of the rRNA region. Numerous hyaline septate hyphae along with conidia were observed histologically. The isolate exhibited low MIC values for voriconazole, itraconazole and isavuconazole while high MIC/MEC values were recorded for the remaining antifungals. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of isolation of S. apiospermum from a skin wound in a dog.

Requests for homemade diets are becoming more common in general practice. It is essential that general practice veterinarians understand the advantages, drawbacks and risks of these diets to facilitate evidence-based discussions in the consult room. In the veterinary literature, it has been shown that many clients are choosing to feed homemade diets without consulting a qualified veterinary nutritionist. This may put their pets at risk of nutrient deficiencies. Calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D deficiencies appear to be common as evidenced by selected case studies. In this article, an overview is given of current homemade diet use in general practice, answers to why clients are interested in using them and how to have better discussions with clients about their use.

Approximately thirty percent of the dogs with idiopathic epilepsy develop multidrug resistance. Therefore, the search for new non-drug treatment alternatives is important. There is a growing interest in the gut-brain axis and its role in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. The gut microbiota can influence brain function by different neural, endocrine, immune and metabolic pathways, but this process is not yet fully understood. In this study, five client-owned dogs with drug-resistant, idiopathic epilepsy received amoxicillin-clavulanic acid as add-on orally (mean duration 32 days (range 21-64 days)). The mean isolated epileptic seizure frequency of these five dogs was 3.3/ week (range 2.5-6.5) with a mean cluster seizure frequency of 0.9/week (range 0.4-1.5). During the amoxicillin-clavulanic acid treatment, three dogs showed complete seizure freedom, one dog showed an 80% decrease of both isolated epileptic seizure and cluster seizure frequency, and one dog showed an increase in isolated epileptic seizure and cluster seizure frequency of 54% and 38%, respectively. In the two-month follow-up period after cessation of the antibiotic administration, the mean isolated epileptic seizure and cluster seizure frequency increased again to 1.5 seizures/week (range 0.9-2.8) and 0.4 clusters/week (range 0.4-0.6), respectively. The preliminary results in this study highlight the need for future research into the role of the canine gut-brain axis in idiopathic epilepsy.
