Tailoring diffraction: linear and nonlinear applications 裁剪衍射:线性和非线性应用

Summary form only given. For two adjacent waveguides and /spl kappa/ there is an overlap integral of their two modes, which is also related to the coupling strength of the array. We will discuss the important consequences that this feature may have on the linear and nonlinear properties of a weakly coupled array (and, more in general, of periodic structures). We will also present theoretical and experimental results demonstrating the possibility of engineering novel dispersion-managed structures to control and even reverse the sign of diffraction.

The influence of gain-saturation on Kerr-lens mode locking of a Cr:LiSAF laser 增益饱和对Cr:LiSAF激光器克尔透镜模式锁定的影响

Theoretical and experimental data for soft aperture Kerr-lens mode locked Ti:sapphire laser predict best performance if the laser crystal is moved out of the centre between the curved mirrors in such a way that the beam-waist is on one crystal surface. But in the case of a Cr:LiSAF laser we found experimentally that we accomplish the best performance with a higher eccentricity. In this paper we extend the formalism by I. Herrmann (1994), who solved the wave equation for the field amplitude by a complex matrix formalism in both transversal directions.

Precise mechanical control of grating pulse compressor in chirped pulse amplification system is of paramount importance in a wide range of application of high intensity femtosecond lasers, because the accurate pulse characterization and the reduced alignment tasks for attaining a tailored ultrashort pulse are desired. We have proposed a femtosecond automatic pulse compressor for use in a chirped pulse amplifier using stepping motors and PZT driven actuators controlled by PC. Introducing the new parameters that are measured by SPIDER, a further improvement is obtainable.

These structures are usually referred to as photonic band gap (PBG) crystals. In this presentation we describe the method of fabrication of PBG materials that may have periodic modulation of refraction index, absorption coefficient and the nonlinearity as well. The method is based on the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. We present results of a study of polymeric films and the multilayer structures with a very high content of multivalent metal cations formed by taking advantage of stepwise coordination of polyanion and multivalent metal cations.

One of the most interesting aspects related to the /spl chi/(2) response of photonic band gap (PBG) crystals is the possibility of greatly enhancing the conversion efficiency of nonlinear processes. The enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) is perhaps the best example that we could cite, although in general our discussion is valid for initial-wave mixing processor. The processes that we discuss owe their increased efficiency to the simultaneous availability of (1) exact phase matching conditions, and (2) high localization of the fields with frequencies tuned at transmission resonances near the photonic band edge.

Nanosecond pulsed optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are very attractive sources for numerous applications of spectroscopy provided that stable single-mode operation is obtained. Although the output of a Q-switched OPO is naturally multimode, we show here that pulsed single-mode output can be achieved from a compact and rugged device based on a dual-cavity DROPO (doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator). This is of particular importance for pollutant detection and for nonlinear spectroscopy applications such as four-wave mixing diagnostics.

Reconfigurable beam shaping in parametric wave mixing 参数波混频中的可重构波束整形

Summary form only given. Singular light beams, that contain topological wave front dislocations, are ubiquitous entities that display fascinating properties with widespread important applications. Screw dislocations, or vortices, are a common dislocation type. They are spiral phase-ramps around a singularity where the phase of the wave is undefined and its amplitude vanishes. Vortices appear spontaneously in several settings, including in speckle-fields, in optical cavities and in the doughnut laser modes, and otherwise they can be generated with phase masks, or with astigmatic optical-components. The order of the screw dislocation multiplied by its sign is referred to as the topological charge of the dislocation. Vortices also form by self-wave front modulation in nonlinear optical media. In this context, parametric mixing of multiple waves containing wave front dislocations in quadratic nonlinear media constitutes a fascinating scenario We report investigations of the dynamics of evolution of screw phase-dislocations existing in the wave front of a Gaussian beam with nested multiple-charged vortices that propagate in quadratic nonlinear crystals under conditions for seeded second-harmonic generation. The number of existing vortices, and their location, is shown to depend on the input light and material conditions, including the topological charge, width and intensity of the pump and seed signals, as well as on the propagation length inside the crystal. Spontaneous vortex pair nucleation consistent with the above predictions was observed in our experiments in KTP cut for Type II phase-matching at /spl lambda/=1.064 /spl mu/m.

Screw dislocations, or vortices, are a common dislocation type. They are spiral phase-ramps around a singularity where the phase of the wave is undefined and its amplitude vanishes. Vortices appear spontaneously in several settings, including in speckle-fields, in optical cavities and in the doughnut laser modes, and otherwise they can be generated with phase masks, or with astigmatic optical-components. The order of the screw dislocation multiplied by its sign is referred to as the topological charge of the dislocation. Vortices also form by self-wave front modulation in nonlinear optical media. In this context, parametric mixing of multiple waves containing wave front dislocations in quadratic nonlinear media constitutes a fascinating scenario We report investigations of the dynamics of evolution of screw phase-dislocations existing in the wave front of a Gaussian beam with nested multiple-charged vortices that propagate in quadratic nonlinear crystals under conditions for seeded second-harmonic generation. The number of existing vortices, and their location, is shown to depend on the input light and material conditions, including the topological charge, width and intensity of the pump and seed signals, as well as on the propagation length inside the crystal. Spontaneous vortex pair nucleation consistent with the above predictions was observed in our experiments in KTP cut for Type II phase-matching at /spl lambda/=1.064 /spl mu/m.","PeriodicalId":250878,"journal":{"name":"Conference Digest. 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (Cat. Novel quantum well intermixing in InGaAs-InGaAsP laser structure using argon plasma exposure 采用氩等离子体曝光的InGaAs-InGaAsP激光结构中新型量子阱混合

Summary form only given. We report a novel quantum well intermixing (QWI) technique in InGaAs-InGaAsP laser structures using high-density Ar plasma exposure. Samples with single quantum well laser structure were exposed to Ar plasma generated by an ECR system at different process conditions and exposure times. During the plasma treatment the Ar flow rate and process pressure were fixed at 50 sccm and 30 mTorr, respectively. The RF power was set to 450 W, while the microwave power to 1400 W for a set of samples, and 800 W for another. After plasma exposure, the samples were subsequently annealed at 600/spl deg/C for 2 minutes using a rapid thermal processor. Photoluminescence measurements at 77 K were then performed to assess the degree of bandgap shift. The degree of intermixing gradually increases with increasing exposure time for samples exposed at 1400 W. The bandgap shift saturated at about 106 nm (72 meV) after 10 min of plasma treatment. The samples exposed to 800 W produced results of similar trend to that of 1400 W, but with lower degrees of blue shift. This could be attributed to the use of lower microwave power, and hence lower ionization of Ar plasma, producing lower defect density due to ion bombardment as well as radiation.
