Hospitals function and are dependent upon good documentation. Increased sensitivity to patients' spiritual needs as an important part of the healing process has highlighted the fact that, compared to the vast amount of pastoral care that is delivered, relatively little documentation is actually made. This hospital sought to demonstrate and document pastoral care given by community clergy through the use of a sticker system. This article describes the objectives of the program, the process of instituting it in a community hospital, and the opportunities for evaluation and performance improvement.

The article points out that specialized settings have areas for pastoral care that may well take a creative approach. Ways to establish pastoral relationships are listed in a paradoxical way. Also highlighted is the extreme “neediness” of people to engage in conversations.

This article discusses the creation of time-limited spiritual discussion groups for clinical staff at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in Manhattan. Two different groups, one for staff and one for volunteers, are described and evaluated. The spirituality discussion groups were multi-disciplinary, with chaplaincy and social work as key organizers. MSK is a dedicated oncology hospital with approximately 500 inpatient beds and extensive outpatient treatment services. Palliative care and home support for end-stage disease is also a priority. MSK is committed to a whole-person approach to treatment, and has historically been supportive as an institution of its chaplaincy, social work, and psychology departments.

In this article we report initial efforts to evaluate the spiritual and religious pre-surgical status of lung transplant patients at one center. Quantitative measurements are made of ultimate values, spiritual well-being, and religiosity of 111 subjects. Results indicate patients possess considerable spiritual resources, with gender, marital status, and religious affiliation being factors for increased spiritual well-being. Implications of these results for ministry with these patients are discussed.

The purposes, guidelines, topics, and some observations about the group process are described. Recommendations are offered about the development of this type of group in other hospitals.
