AbstractThis paper presents the organization and implementation of a state-wide peer review conference. From inception through completion, the intention was to value both consultative and collegial dimensions of peer review. Practical aspects such as guidelines for presenters, strategies for time, place, and frequency of event will be suggested. The model developed will be compared with the College model for peer review.

AbstractPresent theology and ministry are heavily dependent on rationalism and verbal skills. Missing from ministry is an appreciation for mystical experience as a separate approach to reality. This article attempts to illuminate religious experiences as mysticism, an essential part of any ministry. Mysticism is not an altered state of consciousness but an awareness of the Holy in the realm on normal existence. Ministry is defined as eliciting the mystery of God.

AbstractThe incidence of cancer in the United States has risen dramatically over the past twenty years. The personal crisis caused by this disease points to a need to better train clergy in ministering to the spiritual and psychological needs of patients and families. This paper describes a five day residential workshop in psychological oncology sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. The program builds upon the American Cancer Society Basic training program for clergy in care of the cancer patient. We discuss the rationale, objectives, curriculum organization and evaluation of the training experience by participants.

AbstractThe author examines healthcare ethics in a pluralistic society and asks how persons from specific faith traditions can be faithful to traditions, the ethical task and caring. He then suggests “habits of being” as a helpful conceptual stance for chaplains.

AbstractTwo new statements, “The Rights of Parents When a Baby Dies” and “The Rights of the Baby,” are now being circulated among health care professionals by leaders in the perinatal bereavement movement. These statements have significant implications for pastoral care of bereaved parents, the pastoral role in relation to other disciplines, and the pastoral-prophetic ministry to institutions. It is important that chaplains familiarize themselves with the statements, reflect on their meaning for pastoral care and institutional relationships, and respond accordingly.
