D. B. McCurdy
The shift to a customer service, “customer-focused” orientation on health care is pervasive in both secular and religious health care institutions. While acknowledging the resistance among many in the church and in medicine to the corporate, business driven language of this shift, the author cogently argues for consideration of the effects, or fruits, of this change in approach to patient care. He further offers biblical and theological support for a customer-focused orientation.

This article summarizes aspects of healthcare likely to emerge with managed care configurations, and suggests thirteen competencies that will hypothetically be required of chaplains in those structures. As other professions are changing, so too will spiritual caregiving. In systems that continue to support spiritual care as integral to healing processes, chaplains will need to contribute to objectives of illness prevention, health promotion and fostering of total well-being of individuals and communities. This will require chaplains to adopt and develop new capacities in caregiving that are conceptual, pastoral, collaborative and personal. The writer invites response to further develop the list and description of new competencies.

The author offers a personal reflection on the paradox of endings which always contain the possibility of new beginnings. In the inevitable good-byes and losses of everyday life to the ultimate ending in death, there is the potential for new life.

Managed care seeks to offer optimal quality in an expedient, timely and cost-efficient manner. If pastoral care is to be a participating, interdisciplinary partner in a managed care setting spiritual care needs to be focused, intentional and structured with appropriate clinical outcomes while preserving the compassion and empathy normally expected from chaplains. The following article proposes a model of how to structure pastoral care to Coronary Artery Bypass patients. It suggests that it is necessary to unbind grief and loss which consume and distract energy in order for the patient to be free for ongoing healing.

This paper summarizes data concerning the continuing education needs of chaplains from a study which attempted to develop and validate an instrument to measure these needs. Forty needs in three major areas were identified. Thirty-seven of these were affirmed in a national survey. Needs of various demographic groups were compared. Results of factor analysis attempting to determine the underlying factors behind the concept of continuing education needs are presented.
