AbstractAn anniversary is an important time. It is a time to celebrate and a time to reflect. It is a time to give honor and a time to evaluate. An anniversary is a time to survey how far we have come and to make some projections for the future.Important anniversaries for the Clinical Pastoral Education movement are presently occurring. They are the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Rev. Anton Boisen's work in Worcester State Hospital and the 125th anniversary of Dr. Richard Clarke Cabot's birth.The significance of Boisen's work has been noted throughout CPE literature and he has been given his rightful place in our history. It is the purpose of this paper to review the work of Dr. Cabot and to portray a fuller picture of his contributions than is generally presented.

AbstractChaplains are increasingly called on to demonstrate the value of their work as health care dollars shrink. This article describes three methods to accomplish that task. Primary attention is given to two recent research publications which report that persons who use religious/spiritual resources to cope with negative life events produce better outcomes. We explore the possibility of conducting similar studies with general hospital patients to test the benefits of pastoral care.
