Abstract Benjamin Bragge and Edmund Curll published one of the most popular poetry collections of the eighteenth century: The Miscellaneous Works of the Right Honourable the late Earls of Rochester and Roscommon. Originally produced by Bragge in 1706, then reissued the following year under Curll’s imprint, its first part initiated what David Vieth termed the C series of Rochester’s collected poems that enjoyed at least 25 iterations until c.1798. The inaccuracy of the title—no place was found for Rochester’s play Valentinian, his letters, his lyrics or the Alexander Bendo advertisement—was compounded not only by the absence of any texts scholars now perceive to be authoritative but by incorrect attributions for three-quarters of its predominantly libertine and satiric matter, the majority of which, surprisingly, had already been printed under Rochester’s name. Curll published two further editions which continued Bragge’s emphasis and increased the publications’ attraction for the unsophisticated reader. From 1718 the miscellany was published anonymously, perhaps initially under Curll’s direction, and the now settled contents formed the basis on which Rochester’s poetry was understood and appreciated. Despite Vieth’s accurate definition of the canon in 1968, the record of the Bragge-Curll misattributions continues to impede an accurate public perception of Rochester’s poetic achievement.

Abstract This article explores the relationship between Tide-race, a 1962 memoir by the Welsh poet and artist Brenda Chamberlain, and medieval culture and literature on Ynys Enlli. Written in the decades after the Second World War when Chamberlain had left mainland Wales, Tide-race is a memoir of the artist’s time on Enlli living with its small community of fishermen and farmers. In contrast to other works of twentieth-century island literature, I argue, Chamberlain rejected dominant, medieval patriarchal histories of Enlli, refusing to read the island as a male monastic site, or as a Welsh nationalist or cultural space. Tide-race is a medieval modern text that is deeply ambivalent about what medieval culture means for modern conceptions of identity, specifically Welshness and womanhood. Chamberlain’s late modernist work has been neglected because of her status as a Welsh woman writer working outside of the centres of modernism, and she has never been considered in the context of Medievalism Studies. By bringing archival material from the Brenda Chamberlain papers at the National Library of Wales together with the published memoir, this article brings to light an unremarked upon interest in Old English literature and traces the development of Chamberlain’s medievalism in the post-war period. Although her use of the Old English elegies—The Wanderer, The Seafarer and The Wife’s Lament—has remained unnoticed by Chamberlain’s critics, these early medieval poems are translated and adapted in her prose in ways that allow her to exorcize old grudges and challenge masculine ideals.

Abstract This article finds in the Italianate form of sesta rima an additional strand of influence on English ottava rima in the nineteenth century. It explores the verse history that has led to six-line stanzas becoming a formal training ground for octave rhymes, and conducts the first sustained examination of Byron’s engagement with the Italianate sestain. Drawing together Byron’s Italian reading, his correspondence, and his manuscript experiments, the article opens up a cluster of poems between 1813 and 1816 which reveal how his movements towards ottava rima predate his arrival in Italy and intertwine with the history of sesta rima. Only two lines shorter than ottava rima and sharing its pattern of ab rhymes closed by a cc couplet, the stanza has received sparse attention in criticism of modern verse. Exploring how sesta rima became a mode for parodying ottava rima, the paper’s second part examines how the young Tennyson shaped his manuscript rhymes to emulate a Byronic voice. Closely engaging with the genesis and uses of these stanzas in both poets’ manuscripts, the article forms a wider case study in experimental stanza switching and hybrid forms in Romantic and post-Romantic verse.
