: The objective of this study was to evaluate production and properties of liquefied oil-palm stem adhesive. Method for production of this adhesive was inspired by bio-refinery concept. In this context, vascular bundle of oil-palm stem was liquefied through liquefaction process involving thermo-chemical reaction using chemicals of H 2 SO 4 , phenol, and NaOH at 90 C. Properties of the adhesive were compared to Indonesian Standard for phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins. Results of the examinations showed color of the liquefied adhesive was brown-blackish, specific gravity was 1.26, solid content was 86%, viscosity was 111 cP, pH was 7.8, gel time was 98 minutes, and free formaldehyde was not detected. Even though the properties of the liquefied adhesive made of vascular bundles’ oil-palm stem were slightly differ from PF resin, application of this adhesive as binder of wood product should be recommended because of its feasibility as the adhesive.

: One of the favorite fruits in Medan-Indonesia is durian. The number of fruit is comparable to the most waste of durian seed produced. Seeds are one of the ways to breed through the process of germination. In the process of germination which plays an important role is the enzyme amylase. Based on this, the research aims to isolate the enzyme amylase found in durian seed sprouts on the fifth day through dialysis with ammonium sulfate and then determined its activity against temperature, pH, substrate concentration. Through this research, the enzyme amylase has been isolated from the sprouts of durian beans with the best activity at temperature 40 oC (36.87 U/ml), pH 7 (36.86 U/ml), substrate concentration 1% (26.36 U/ml). The best ammonium sulfate saturation in the dialysis process is 60% acquired enzyme activity of 58.59 U/ml.

: Utilization of coconut shell soot as raw material for making carbon dots has been successfully carried out. This study used coconut shell soot with 5 M HNO 3 acid oxidation method which is then the Carbon dots characteristics were determined using UV light, UV-Vis, TEM analysis, and functional group analysis with FT-IR. Coconut shell soot is obtained by pyrolysis method. The heating process using a furnace carried out for 2 hours at 400 °C. Carbon dots produced by heating with 5 M HNO 3 for 12 hours at 100 °C, centrifuged and dialysis. The yield of carbon dots was 87%. The FT-IR spectrum shows that the Carbon dots formed produce OH group absorption at 3396 cm -1 , absorption of C = C at wave number 1637 cm -1 , absorption of CO groups, and CH at wave number 1339 cm -1 , and 835 cm -1 . Analysis with Transmission Electron Microscopy shows that carbon dots has an average diameter of 1.50 nm. Absorbance spectrum analysis (UV-Vis) results in the appearance of new uptake showing the electron transition at a wavelength of 307 nm and giving green fluorescence under UV light.

: Bamboo fiber (Bambuseae) has cellulose content that can be used as a filler in the composites. The objective of this study is to obtain alpha cellulose from bamboo fiber, through the isolation process. This study was carried out using the delignification method with NaOH solvent on temperature at 80 o C and the time variations of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 minutes as the first stage of separation of alpha cellulose from other compounds contained in bamboo fiber. The results showed that the optimum condition of delignification time was 60 minutes with yield of 55.26%. The FTIR spectra was performed to confirm the formation of the product (alpha cellulose) proved by spectrum indicating the presence of the cellulose compound characterized by peak formation in 1641 cm -1 absorption area by comparing the cluster on the reaction alpha cellulose with the cluster on the bamboo fiber. XRD result showed that the crystalline portion of alpha cellulose was higher than amorf portion of alpha cellulose itself with the total amount of crystallinity index was 93.3%.
