Today it is apparently permitted that one take an occasional glance at the things that have been left behind in the climb up from the past without suffering the penalties imposed upon the ancients. Pillars of salt have given way to a show of reason. Foresight, is, however, denied to an amazing degree.

This paper briefly reviews the development of power transmission, pointing out the power limitations of long distance, high capacity transmission systems. The paper serves as a general introduction to a group of papers, giving the results of analytical and experimental investigations of the power limits and stability of transmission systems. This group of papers which is to be presented at the A. I. E. E. Midwinter Convention includes, in addition to this paper by Mr. Hanker, papers by R. D. Evans and H. K. Sels; R. D. Evans and R. C. Bergvall; and C. L. Fortescue and C. F. Wagner.

The use of inductive coupling between the tuned grid circuit and plate circuit of a radio-receiving circuit network employing an electron tube has been extensively used for the amplification of received signals since its discovery by K. H. Armstrong. Using simple alternating-current theory this paper shows that the amplification produced by this type of regeneration in an amplifying circuit network can be considered as being caused by a reduction in the resistance of the tuned circuit. The current amplification produced in the tuned circuit for any value of impressed radiofrequency signal is = Ri {R ~ a)-c^r2 where R x is the resistance of the tuned circuit, M is the mutual inductance which produces the feed back, n the voltage amplification factor of the tube , R2 the total resistance of the plate circuit, C 1 the capacity in the tuned circuit across which the tube is connected, a the reduction in resistance produced by the capacitive feed back through the tube. The voltage of the grid was assumed to be negative at all times. The above equation was completely confirmed by experiment. The current in the tuned circuit with and without regeneration was measured by means of an electrontube voltmeter which measured the drop of potential across the capacity C l in the tuned circuit. The reduction in resistance a caused by capacitive feed back was obtained experimentally by the resistance variation method. CONTENTS. Page,

The Bureau of Standards has just issued a paper by F. W. Dunmore, which describes the development of a portable radio direction finder with but two controls — one for tuning and one for balancing. This direction finder operates over the frequency band from 90 to 7700 kilocycles (3300 to 39 meters). The direction finder is of the simple rotating coil type. The receiving set is of the superheterodyne type, with the controls reduced to one by the use of a cam-operated condenser. The wide frequency range is made possible by a set of seven interchangeable plug-in direction finder coils, each with a corresponding heterodyne generator coil and cam for operating the auxiliary tuning condensers.

The 1925 Edition of the National electrical code has now been released by the National Board of Fire Underwriters. The actual date when it supersedes the 1923 Edition in the review of electric wiring can be determined by inquiry of the authority by whom inspections are made in each respective locality.

Experimental work in the production of sponge iron, conducted by the Department of the Interior at the Seattle, Wash., experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, has advanced to the point where it is believed that industrial applications of the process can be safely considered for the production of sponge iron as a metallurgical reagent for the precipitation of copper, lead, and numerous other metals from solution. In those regions remote from larger iron and steel making centers and where electric energy can be had at a comparatively cheap rate, sponge iron can also be converted into iron and steel products by melting in the electric furnace.

Investigating the radiation from the carbon arc is a matter of great importance in the treatment of diseases by exposure to light, especially sunlight. However, sunlight can not always be obtained, hence the demand for an artificial source approaching sunlight in its characteristics.
