Abstract The environmental impacts of the food system, especially the distances covered, are not clear to the final consumer. The aim was to evaluate and calculate the urban telecoupling and the environmental impacts and calculate the energy consumption and the environmental emissions of the organic foods. Through the calculation of quantities, distances, losses and the analysis of telecouplings, we measured Greenhouse Gas (GG) emissions, as well as the energy and carbon footprints of organic foods traded at the CEASA/PR, Curitiba. Emissions had a low environmental impact because the largest quantities of transported organics originate from production sites located within the greater Curitiba region. The study showed a consumption pattern supporting food produced in regions adjacent to the trading center in safe and healthy and safe way, which may be associated with a greater awareness of the environmental impacts resulting from the distances covered.

Abstract Although it has already started in some states, charging for the use of water resources is not yet widespread in Brazil. The aim of this research was to know the perceptions and willingness of farmers in relation to payment for the use of water resources, to make it feasible to collect this fee, introduced by Law No. 9,433, of 1997-Brazilian National Policy of Water Resources (PNRH). In this context, we sought to obtain this knowledge through qualitative research and a semi-structured survey applied to 37 farmers from five hydrographic basins in the Brazilian Federal District. The results, using Iramuteq software, showed the lack of motivation to pay for use of water resources, but also made it clear that the negative situational motivation can be modified if the State intervenes to meet both demands for information and questions raised, in order to bring their motivations, attitudes and sustainable behaviors to light.

Abstract Payment for Environmental Services (PES) is an economic instrument that aims to reconcile the conservation of ecosystem services (ES) with the economic interests of the actors involved. In order to guide decision-makers in the process of structuring and planning PES schemes, this article analyzed Brazilian schemes against the best practices recommended in the scientific literature. As a result, monitoring the ES provision or its proxies and spatial segmentation were practices observed in Brazilian schemes in line with literature recommendations. The same did not happen with practices: flexible and/or adaptable contracts and payments greater than provision costs. These results are useful to reinforce strengths and point out possible vulnerabilities in the design of PES schemes, contributing to the improvement of both new and ongoing initiatives.

Abstract Based on the relationship between the Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia (UFSB) and the Teia dos Povos (Peoples’ Web) - network of traditional communities and urban and peasant movements -, the text suggests reflections about the meeting of traditional and academic knowledge as a reference of a decolonizing education, both in the public university and in the Teia’s territories. Through meetings with students, task forces and workshops, followed by the action-research method, the Teia allows us to advance in understanding the possible relationships between agroecology and a decolonial education project. This proposal by the Teia, which dialogues with the concept of ecology of knowledges and is integrated with the strategy of agroecological transition and the construction of communitarian autonomy, provides us with subsidies to discuss how the questions established within the scope of political ecology are connected to epistemic decolonization within the scope of an emancipatory struggle strategy.

Abstract Stakeholders’ increasing concern with sustainability has been encouraging firms to adopt practices aimed at minimizing their negative externalities. The aim of the current article is to investigate the impact of adopting sustainability practices on the performance and competitiveness of the Brazilian furniture industry. Environmental management variables, operational practices, social practices focused on both the employees and the community were herein considered sustainability practices. Results have indicated the positive association of operational and social practices with sustainability performance and competitiveness. However, such behavior was not observed in environmental practices. The current study has shown the way each sustainability dimension influences performance by encouraging managers to invest in social and environmental practices, and by contributing to systemic changes on behalf of sustainability. Evidence has confirmed that investing in sustainability practices helps improving companies’ performance and competitiveness.
