Abstract The Amazon has increasingly become a terrain of intense and distinct local and transnational disputes. In the interior of its forests, cut by myriads of rivers, inhabit a variety of peoples that depend on it for their survival. This work analyses the ways in which some local groups deal with issues assigned by global agendas focused on the preservation of the forest. Through the relationship between three species of fauna and tourism, it seeks to understand how these groups locally develop their processes of negotiation and conflict resolution to practice their forms of conservation and development. Years of field research in two protected areas of the Brazilian Amazon provide a reflection on how the forest is inhabited and managed, revealing the ways in which communities and institutions negotiate conflicts of interests regarding conservation and use of the environment.

Abstract In early childhood, air pollution leads to an increased risk of disease, premature death, and development of disruptions. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is considered the classical pollutant of major concern. However, in Brazil, fine particulate monitoring is still limited and restricted to a few cities. Particularly, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, only one automatic station obtains PM2.5 concentrations and publishes the air quality indexes daily. This study is part of the project “Clean air for a good start” managed by the Horizon Citizen Foundation, with the goal of obtaining evidence to set a plan to reduce children exposition to air pollution. Data is shared on a global web platform. Results showed that PM2.5 levels are high when compared with WHO guidelines and coordinated actions would be needed to decrease emissions of primary pollutants and secondary aerosol’s precursors.

Abstract This article argues that the production of monographs can produce new discourses in the curricula of science and environmental education for pre-service teacher education based on emancipatory approaches. We rely on critical discourse studies to understand the relationship between hegemony and emancipation in pre-service teacher education. Twelve monographs of environmental education published between 2015 and 2018 were analyzed. We found some monographs under hegemonic visions of environmental issues such as management, procedural time, mitigation of responsibility, and the search for efficiency. On the other hand, we found other monographs that referred to the struggle, resistance, denunciation, community, and inclusion of popular masses instigating insurgent practices. Likewise, hybrid discourses have constituted discourses in the monographs, which is typical of late modernity. Finally, we propose non-hegemonic ways to include environmental issues in pre-service teacher science education.

Abstract There is a great lack of scientific knowledge about the Ocean and a disconnect between scientific knowledge and public understanding of this environment. Considering the importance of Ocean Literacy in society, we illustrate in this study how the complexity and transversality of the Ocean enable disciplinary and interdisciplinary dialogues and reflections in schools. Based on a documental analysis, this work identified the presence and frequency of relationships between the Specific Competencies (SC) of the Common National Curriculum Base (BNCC - High School) and the Ocean Literacy Principles, based on contents of the Natural Sciences. Relationships between all the Principles and SC were identified, favored by aspects such as interdisciplinarity, scientific work, social dimension and complexity. Considering the illustrative character of this work, we emphasize the potential of using the Ocean as an integrating theme, the need for educational processes for educators and the planning of school pedagogical proposals.

Abstract The main issue in this century were the increasing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions after the industrial cycle, and it became international concerns related to climate mitigation challenges. Thus, our focus is to discuss a historical view between climate change diagnosis and how carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology may contribute to mitigate climate change challenges. Our methodology is a literature review of technical and economic questions of CCS and the analysis based on geological data. Results show anthropogenic GHG sources’ geological view from chronologic era highlighted how human interaction with the environment climate conditions, and international climate agreements may encourage changes in new legal, institutional, and normative frameworks under jurisdictions and deal with the challenges for implementing CCS technology via soft power. Therefore, we conclude that governments are responsible for arbitrating and establishing the available resources, the interests between the groups, adjusting costs over time to those they will fund.

Abstract Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is defined by the World Health Organization as a methodology that encompasses the identification, prediction and evaluation of expected changes in health risks. Objective: to analyze the contributions of experts on the stages of HIA. Research was carried out with Brazilian specialists on the stages of HIA with regard to the areas where hydroelectric plants are located using an electronic platform. Eighteen specialists from eight higher education institutions in five Brazilian states participated in the study. They indicate that the following aspects must be observed in the HIA: the need to create interdisciplinary and multiprofessional teams; participation of the affected population at all stages; special attention to mental health; and consider the scientific evidence. These aspects contribute to qualify the HIA stages in the implementation and monitoring of new hydroelectric projects.

Abstract In the municipality of São Paulo, the institution of community gardens has led an innovative social process of self-management of public spaces by citizens, using social networks to organize interventions in an activist way. The research sought to investigate political engagement in community gardens in São Paulo, bringing a perspective based on the concepts of power to act, present in Espinosa’s philosophy, and of commons, based on the work of Dardot and Laval (2017). The methodology consists of an ethnography based on semi-structured interviews and participant observation in community garden joint-efforts, meetings and events. In these meetings, it is possible to consider that there are affections empowering the subjects to engage in significant changes for territorial management, enabling the formation of an expanded collective of action that establishes unique forms of management confronting institutional powers.
