There are five (5) sacred forests in Emohua Local Government Area in Rivers, Nigeria. The area is situated in the Niger Delta region of the country. The forests include Abaka, Ovulikpo, Ohia, Ogbagoroggaro and Ogbagorigeri. These sacred sites are regarded as the temples of god by the local people due to their beliefs, but technically the forests are centres of biodiversity. In recent times, anthropogenic interference activities expose the forest to threat and challenges which make the development and adoption of conservation strategies inevitable. This paper focused on the various strategies necessary for conservation of the sacred sites at Emohua.

Optical Properties of Silver Aluminium Sulphide Ternary Thin Films Deposited by Chemical Bath Method 化学浴法制备银铝硫化三元薄膜的光学性质

Ternary thin films of Silver Aluminium Sulphide (AgAlS2) have been prepared by chemical bath deposition techniques. Aqueous solution of 41.5 mls containing AgNO3, Al2(SO4)3, thiourea and EDTA was used, where AgNO3, Al2(SO4)3, thiourea were the source of Ag + , Al + and S - respectively and EDTA was used as a complexing agent. NaOH served as pH adjuster. The films were deposited at 300K of temperature. The deposited film properties were studied using a Janway UV - VIS spectrophotometer. From the spectral analysis of absorbance and transmittance, the optical and solid properties were obtained. The properties studied include the reflectance, absorption coefficient, thickness, refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and band gap energy. The films show high absorbance in the UV

Towards Restructuring Library and Information Science Curricula for the Challenges of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Environment in Nigeria 面向尼日利亚信息和通信技术(ICT)环境挑战的图书馆和信息科学课程重组

This paper deals with restructuring of library and information science curriculum for the challenge of ICT environment. The paper highlights the following areas: conceptual framework, qualities of Library and Information Science curriculum, rationale for restructuring library and information science curriculum, areas in library and information science curriculum that requires changes, rolls of National Association of Library and Information Science Educators (NALISE), Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) and other related bodies in restructuring of library and information science curriculum. The following Information Communication Technology (ICT) courses: electronic resources management, management of social media tools, website design and management, networks and networking, software design and management, database design and management, innovation and creativity were identified as ICT fields that can be integrated into the curriculum. The paper reveals that the curricula of most library schools in Nigeria examined do not contain some ICT components that are relevant to librarians in training for them to be effective in the modern society. The implication of the paper is that heads of library schools in Nigeria should identify the loop-holes in the curricula and take pragmatic measures in reviewing and restructuring the curriculum for library and information science education professional that can deliver in ICT dominated society. Space Research in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities 非洲空间研究:挑战与机遇

Africa has lost its glory as the pioneer of space research as evidenced by the ancient library of Alexandria in Egypt that housed the first space research center more than two thousand years ago. Cave paintings in Olduvai Gorge in present day Tanzania showed how the first humans communicated millions of years ago. Early Africans used drum beats to alert of an impending danger or of festivities. The discovery of papyrus the material used as writing paper and the invention of words that make the alphabet all originated in Ancient Egypt. All of these examples show that at a certain stage in history, Africa was a leader in science and technology (Shibanda & Isabel, 2000). However in the 21st Century, Africa has lagged behind technologically compared to all the other continents. Space research and deployment of supporting technologies including remote sensing and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) remain fundamental to bridge the technological gap between Africa and the rest of the world hence solving some of Africa’s challenges. This study analyses the challenges and opportunities that African countries face in harnessing space technologies to be used in natural disaster management, disease prevention, land use, agricultural productivity improvements and even in conflict resolution.

Fifteen years old trees of Terminalia ivorensis and  Taminalia mantaly established as landscape plants were studied for gummosis incidence and its effects on the species growth attributes. The study was conducted at the University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria in January to December, 2011. The result showed that Phytophlthora palmivora is the causal pathogen of gummosis in Terminalia ivorensis and T . mantaly at the University of Port Harcourt. The disease incidence was 76% and 29.5% in T . mantaly and T . ivorensis respectively. There were significant differences in disease incidence between the two species at 5% level of probability. The disease also had significant impact on the growth attributes of the two species. There were significant differences between healthy and infested trees of the species at 5% level of probability. An integrated management approach should be developed to curb the incidence of the diseases and reduce its effects on growth and development of the Terminalia species. The strategies should involve: appropriate cultural practices to mitigate disease spread, application of environmental friendly practices and breeding for resistant varieties. Observations on the biology of Callosobruchus maculatus ( Fab.) were carried out under ambient laboratory conditions. Pattern of oviposition, female adult longevity and F1 progeny emergence in Callosobruchus maculatus ( Fab. ) were observed. The results showed that over 60% of the total number of eggs was laid during the first 72 hours of the commencement of oviposition; however, oviposition rate and F1 adult emergence of the bruchids decreased with time thereafter. The maximum adult C .  maculatus survival period was about ten days. Keywords : Callosobruchus maculatus , pattern of oviposition, female adult longevity and F1 adult progeny emergence

Data Mining for Cyber Security 网络安全的数据挖掘

Cyber security is concerned with protecting computer and network system from corruption due to malicious software including Trojan horses and virus. Security of our network system is becoming imperative as massive sensitive information is transmitted across the network. In this research paper, data mining application for cyber security is highly explored. We discussed various cyber-terrorism or attack committed across the network such as malicious intrusion, credit card fraud, identity thefts, and infrastructure attack. Data mining techniques such as classification, anomaly, link analysis and so on are being applied to detect or prevent the aforementioned cyber-terrorism or attack. Recommendations were made and suggestion for further study was indicated.

Assessment of Water Supply Quality in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria 尼日利亚阿南布拉州Awka供水质量评估

The patronage of water of questionable qualities in the study area due to the failure of the Anambra State Water Corporation to provide potable water supply in Awka and environs prompted this research work. Various water sources patronized in the study area were collected and subjected to physical, chemical and microbial analysis to determine their pollution/contamination status. The work revealed that the surface and borehole/well Water sources are microbiologically polluted. Ca +2 and Mg +2 levels in water samples were high, this results to hard water. Fe+2 concentrations in the water samples ranged from 1.20-5.00 mg/l. 100% of samples exceeded the MPL of 0.3mg/l, low pH favours oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron, giving an objectionable reddish-brown colour to the water. Iron also promotes the growth of “iron bacteria”. Aggressive public awareness of the pollution status, routine check of the water quality and increased sanitary conditions in the study area in order to ameliorate this problem were recommended. Evaluation of Two Indigenous Multipurpose Shrub Species for Agroforestry Practices in Nigeria 尼日利亚农林业实践中两种本地多用途灌木物种的评价

Trees integrated with crops in time and space help nutrient cycling on farms by increasing the supply and availability of nutrient in the crop root zone and reducing nutrient losses. An analysis to determine the nutrient composition of two indigenous multipurpose shrubs ( Uvaria chamae p . beauv and Icacina trichantha oliv ) of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, was conducted in the lowland rainforest agro-ecological zone. The roots and leaves of the shrubs were collected from the three agro-ecological (mangrove, freshwater swamp and lowland rainforest) zones and analysed for nutrient contents including the soils. Nitrogen content was determined using Kjeldahl method while phosphorus and potassium were determined by flame photometry method. The results indicated a great variability in the nutrient composition of the two species. Nitrogen content in the leaves and roots of Icacina trichantha was 2.78% and 1.17% while that of Uvaria chamae was 1.85% and 0.65% respectively. The percentage phosphorus composition in the roots of Icacina trichantha was 0.09% while that of Uvaria chamae was 0.07%. Whereas in the leaves sample, Uvaria chamae had phosphorus content of 0.10%, the percentage composition of potassium in Uvaria chamae was 0.09% while  Icacina trichantha had 0.05% respectively. In the roots, Icacina trichantha  and Uvaria chamae  had 0.11% and 0.09% potassium content respectively. The two indigenous multipurpose shrubs contained essential nutrient sources for growth and high crop yield. It is therefore recommended that farmers could intercrop these species with food crops in their farmland to improved soil fertility.
