This study was aimed at investigating the determinants of effective internal control system in Nigerian banks and the impact of such determinants. In order to generate the necessary data for the study, a questionnaire designed in modified Likert-scale was administered on twenty-one (21) chief internal auditors of selected recapitalized banks currently operating in Port Harcourt. The data were analysed using the mean scores and the multiple regression. Our findings in this study revealed that presentation of early report, respect for authority, willingness to effect changes, lack of workers collusion, workers competence, independence of internal control staff, management observance of control, good remuneration of internal control staff, cost of instituting internal control measures, willingness to enforce controls, control measures for unusual transactions, and well-designed organizational structure have a significant impact on the effectiveness of internal control system in Nigerian banks. Based on the finding of this study, the following recommendations were made: internal control staff should be made to be answerable to authorities outside management to promote independence, internal control staff should be given the autonomy to operate so that proper investigation of the activities of executive members can be carried out, high level ethical standards should be enshrined in Nigerian banks to make internal control more effective. Key words : Determinants, internal control, Nigerian banks

Increase is the effectiveness of teaching and learning through the adoption of social networking technology in the teaching and learning process in Nigeria tertiary institutions, using Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike as case study, is one of the landmark achievements of information and communication technology and as innovative pedagogy aimed at redefining education. The study employed a survey research method and was aimed at finding out how advantageous and important adoption of social networking is to teaching and learning in Nigeria Universities, and the factors militating against this adoption. The instrument used for the study was structured questionnaires, and the instrument was validated by five scholars from the Federal University of Technology Owerri. A response rate of 80% was recorded. The responses from questionnaires were anlaysed using frequency distribution and parentages. The results from the study revealed that majority of the respondents gave positive response and agreed that adoption of social networking in teaching and learning in Nigeria Universities is important and advantageous and will ensure a closer link between lecturers and students and will help bridge the divide between the students and the lecturers. Use of social Networking media in teaching would also help sharpen the students’ skills in publication. Some top most militating factors against this adoption include epileptic power supply, high tariff on internet access and unwilling of lecturers to adopt changes. Some recommendations made were suggestions for improvement in power supply and other basic infrastructures by the government, improvement of technical know-how of both students and lecturers and increase in interest on this adoption and use.

This study investigated how to enhance metacognitive practices in science education students using the intelligencies for nation building. The study adopted the survey design.180 undergraduate students were randomly sampled from the faculty of Education, Imo state university, Owerri. Seventeen item rating scale was used for data collection. The instrument was structured on a four point scale of Most Often (MO), Often (O), Rarely Often (RO) and Never (N). Three experts from Measurement and Evaluation (2) and one from Science Education scrutinized the instrument to ensure validity. The Cronbach Alpha Reliability Co-efficient was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and it yielded a reliability index of 0.78. The mean and standard deviation was used for answering the research questions. Any mean score below 2.50 was not upheld while a mean of 2.50 and above was accepted. Findings from the study show the following: the use of Linguistic intelligence to enhance metacognitive practices show that the learners are yet to use such strategy often since 13 out of the 14 items that elicited responses were below the cut-off mean while the use of Kinesthetic intelligence to enhance metacognitive practices show that the learners often use such strategy often since 2 out of the 3 items that elicited responses were above the cut-off mean. It was recommended that teachers provide Questions for students to ask themselves as they plan, monitor, and evaluate their thinking within four learning contexts—in class, assignments, quizzes/exams, and the course as a whole. Also prompts for integrating metacognition into discussions of pairs during clicker activities, assignments, and quiz or exam preparation should be encouraged.

Sustainable concrete provides a considerable solution to the increasing cost of conventional concrete production in the world. Though, it is generally described as cheap, however it’s design and cost implications for low income communities needs to be evaluated. Hence, this paper evaluates the production of sustainable concrete and its cost implication in Nigeria. Experimental design of high strength concrete made with steel fibre and bamboo fibre as reinforcement having a targeted compressive strength of 50 Mpa was considered. The steel and bamboo fibres were proportioned at 1 % each. From the experimental mix design and cost analysis conducted, it was realized that steel fibre reinforced concrete are most expensive per cubic metre, costing about seven times as much as plain concrete of the same volume, but bamboo is a low cost alternative to steel as a reinforcing material. Key words : affordable housing, bamboo fibre, concrete, steel fibre, sustainability

In Nigeria much attention is given on general industrial pollution and pollution in oil industries with little reference on damage of pollution caused by mobile transportation sources of air pollution. The situation of increased pollution from mobile transportation sources is on the increase in per capital vehicle ownership, thus resulting to high congestion on Nigeria city roads and increase in the concentration of pollutants in the air, consequently, increasing health risk on human population. The paper therefore examined the concept of pollution and agents of pollution. Attention was given to air pollutants with particular reference to vehicular pollution. This paper suggested that for Nigeria government to avoid negative effects of transport on urban environment should broaden and intensify environmental policies to meet the needs of the present without compromising that of the future generation. Population is a major source of environmental degradation and it impacts primarily on the environment through the use of natural resources and production of wastes with its attendant health problems. The study examined population growth and overpopulation in Nigeria and its impact on the environment. To achieve environmental sustainability, the paper stressed the need for intensification of environmental education in Nigerian schools using Basic Science at the Junior secondary school level in order to ‘catch them young’. The paper advocated the use of role play, a method seen as one of the best ways to enable pupils in the classroom share in something of the reality of issues in the real world beyond the school, as a good strategy to impact environmental culture into the young ones. By so doing, the children will acquire relevant environmental skills, attitude and interest that will spur them into action towards maintaining a sustainable environment. The paper also made some recommendations on ways to combat environmental degradation among which is that basic science teachers should effectively teach the environmental topics/elements infused into the basic science curriculum to enable students acquire environmental knowledge, skills and attitudes for environmental sustainability. Lead Silver Sulphide (PbAgS) thin films on glass substrate have been deposited by chemical bath deposition technique with EDTA and TEA as complexing agents, while ammonium solution served as pH adjuster. The films were deposited at room temperature of 300K. The deposited films were characterized using UV – VIS spectrophotometer. From the spectral analysis of the absorbance / transmittance values, the optical and solid state properties were deduced. The optical properties studied include reflectance, absorption coefficient, thickness, refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical conductivity and band gap energy. The films showed very high absorbance in the UV region, moderate in the VIS region and low in NIR region. Transmittance is low in the UV region and high in the VIS – NIR region, while reflectance is generally low in all spectral region studied. The films showed a direct band gap range of 2.20 eV – 2.40 eV, refractive index range of 2.1 – 2.60, while the thickness of the films increases with deposition time

This study examined the effects of narcissism and sexual harassment on employee behaviour in organizations. It also provides some strategic ways by which employees can cope with these not so subtle problems in their work places. It adopted a descriptive approach to the study and revealed that narcissism and sexual harassment are among the many common phenomena of most organizations in the world. Sexual harassment is tangible or quid pro quo in nature and occurs when an employee’s career path is directly impacted by a supervisor’s unwelcome request for sexual favours or other sexual advances. It also occurs under a hostile work – related environment where intimidation is applied to secure sexual favours from unwilling employees. The consequences of any of these forms of sexual harassment can be lasting emotional damages, depression, fear, frustration, and reduced productivity. Narcissism as a psycho – social problem on the job assumes the forms of an erotic self – love or a morbid and excessive self – admiration of employees at the work place or a compensatory reaction of minimal self – esteem which leads to covert jealousy towards others on the job. It was concluded that victims of these work – related psycho – social problems should seek professional or expert advice avoid environments under which they prevail or report such matters to their superior / management teams so that their cases could be effectively resolved based on some existing organizational policies on such related cases. Key words : Narcissism, sexual harassment, emotional damages, depression, intimidation, covert jealousy and reduced productivity.
