The Conference on the Future of Europe, inaugurated in occasion with the Day of the European Union (May 9th, 2021), remarks the new deal of European institutions and opens to a future of participative democracy, in which the impetus of initiative would be in the hands of European peoples, without any discrimination and any difference. The contribution aims to describe the future perspectives of the EU: From a common platform of participation to the construction of a “positive” model of democracy in order to renew the institutions of the Union.

A hopeful World is wondering whether COP27, to be held next November in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt), has the potential to foster the much-needed change of mindset that determined the disillusion of the previous International Conferences organized by the UNFCCC, as the regional mid-term MENA conference on climate change, held last March in Dubai, seemed to stagnate in lamentations, instead of steering into action. In the meantime, Africa is going through an escalation among syndemics, diminished access to food, and local crises fuelled by climate change, whose ticking bomb is rhythmed by floods and droughts, while the new need of the global North for energy supplies could determine economic opportunities but also negative impacts on African decarbonization and mitigating actions. There is a shared concern on whom and how to push for immediate political pressures in order not to lose the little thrust that we had gained.

The province of Cabo Delgado, in the extreme north of Mozambique, is experiencing a difficult situation of armed conflict linked to the presence of an “Islamist” insurgency launched by the group known as al-Shabaab. The essay reconstructs and analyses the main topics and the most relevant axes of this complex political and social process, by examining in particular: origins and characteristics of the group, the ways in which it was formed, the main reasons underlying the phenomenon, placing them within the socio-economic context of the region. Finally, it discusses some aspects related to military responses to the rebellion, including the role of some international actors.

The profound social transformations, the increase in interpersonal violence in a public space, including workplaces and learning places, the media coverage of sexual scandals (such as the famous “Harvey Weinstein” case), and the response to these problems (#MeToo, #balancetonporc on Twitter, #Iwas), urgently raise the problem of their collective representation today and what forms of degradation the male-female relationship is likely to have. To address the topic of harassment, we divide the treatment as follows: 1) Methodological premise; 2) what is harassment; 3) the forms of harassment; 4) what psychology and sociology can tell us about the phenomenon in question; 5) domestic violence; 6) Defense against harassment.

Il frettoloso ritiro delle truppe americane dall’Afghanistan nell’agosto del 2021, dopo vent’anni di presenza sul suolo di questo paese, ha accesso un dibattito sulla stampa e sui social media tra coloro che ne hanno parlato in termini di disfatta dell’“Occidente” e coloro che, al contrario, l’hanno difesa come scelta legittima che lascia finalmente spazio alla politica locale e all’autodeterminazione. Come sovente accade nel caso di accadimenti politici del Medio e Vicino Oriente, tutti sono diventati “esperti”.

Poland and Hungary have played a pivotal role in the post-socialist democratic transformation, even in the field of elections and electoral legislation. The two countries differed from each other. Hungary opted for a mixed electoral system, in which the majoritarian component was dominant. Poland, instead, chose a proportional system. From a general standpoint, the judiciary system of the two countries – and, in particular, their constitutional courts – did not raise any particular objection to the basic guidelines of electoral legislation. The judicial intervention only took place occasionally, and more incisively in Hungary, when a significant departure from proclaimed principles occurred. This was particularly relevant with reference to the voting rights of citizens who live abroad.

The essay is focused on a specific component of the Italian solidarity toward the victims of Latin American military coups: women’s association, as widely known, a plural world. Based on primary sources, it considers the time span included between the first episode of that kind – the Brazilian coup of 1964 – and Chile’s 1973 one, an experience that produced a widespread and constant interaction between civil society and political institutions in our country. Through fund raising, counter information and multiple forms of denounce, several female associations in Italy have made their voice heard in support of the victims – women themselves – of political repression in Latin America during the ‘long seventies’. It was a decade in which, along with women’s enhanced participation in the public sphere, transnational activism began to denounce authoritarian regimes’ human rights abuses.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won the Lower House Elections, held on October 31, 2021. The Japanese Party obtained an undisputed victory after a year of harsh criticism addressed to the Suga Cabinet, run by the then LDP party chief, for his ineffective management of the Pandemic crisis. How can the long and almost unchallenged rule of the LDP over Japanese politics, from its foundation in 1955 to the last electoral success, be explained? This paper addresses the topic from an historical perspective, focusing on dr. Akai Ohi’s political campaign in the last General elections. Dr. Ohi (1980) is a Japanese political scientist who ran as a candidate for the Constitutional Democratic Party, the main opposition party, in the second constituency of Hiroshima Region, one of the LDP historical strongholds. The cornerstone of his political campaign was the establishment of the electoral alliance with the Communists in his constituency. The dialogue with dr. Ohi reported in this article explores his experience as a candidate and his analysis as a political scientist.

The analysis of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the cultural rights of national minorities in the countries of Central Eastern, Baltic and Balkan Europe (CEBBE) cannot ignore the fact that since the end of the 1980s, the forms of State of these countries – “inspired”, albeit in different measures, by the Socialist one – have been affected by a number of changes, which in turn influenced their models of minority protection. The article therefore pays particular attention to the relationship between the evolution of the forms of States in CEBBE countries and the shaping of new models of protection of cultural rights of minority groups. This analysis is functional not only to identify in a comparative perspective similarities and differences between the models of protection of minority cultural rights, but above all to verify the effective guarantee of the same in the context of the democratic backsliding experienced by some CEBBE countries, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
