This paper introduces a new dimension of spiritual ambiance design using a real-world interactive temple design project. The research focus has shifted from users’ basic demands for physical design artifacts to the spiritual demands through embodied interaction. Thus, this study aims at enhancing the spiritual refl ection in temple design through ambient media in interactive space. The objective of designing spiritual ambiance in temple is to develop a medium for taking the believers into religious contemplation and enhancing understanding of spirit of Bodhisattva Guan Yin. This research develops the design process of interactive space design with spiritual ambiance. Through the three design levels of emotional design principles, the design conceptual model of spiritual ambiance triggers resonances through metaphor association. To verify the conceptual model, the design concept is implemented in the physical space via human-centered embodied interaction. The on-site project not only introduces advanced sensing technology embedded into the temple but also verifi es the applicability of human–computer interaction to a new dimension of spiritual ambiance design

This paper presents an initial investigation into developing smart homes for the elderly. Smart homes refer to domestic living environments that equipped with “sensible” and “responsive” facilities, which employ smart technologies, to provide occupants a sound and comfortable living. Designers and sociologists have observed reluctances and even rejections to these technologies from the elderly. A Cultural Probes study shows that the elderly welcome new technologies but reject robotic companionships. In addition, a questionnaire survey concludes that smart technologies for home safety and security, energy conservation and usage monitoring, as well as health care and maintenance, are desirable.

Today, buildings with monotonous facade fill the city. However, many buildings which the elements constituting their facade are changed, were seen in work designed by architects. This paper aims at examining the potentiality of automated fluctuating design creation focused on architecture facades, by analysing the design trend of architectural fluctuating designs and creating fluctuating facade automatically based on the analysis.

The purpose of this study is to develop a digitized Taiwanese colour image database for architectural colour scheme in Taiwan. This paper uses adjectives to present each colour’s contribution to the colour image. The system uses the “colour difference formula” from the CIEDE2000 method, which calculates the difference between the two colour perceptions represented by the two given points. Using the “Group Nearest Neighbour” algorithm, the retrieval mechanism obtains a similarity measurement. This approach can help designers to know the meanings of colours and their associated colour images, which will help them develop the building image.

This paper describes how designers can be supported in the early stages of designing through more flexible representations. It presents situated agency as a means to address this problem. Interpretation is a necessary process to give meaning to data before creating a representation. A framework for situated interpretation agents is outlined, with a focus on push-pull and the process of situation. An example for creating a CAAD representation from a raster image is used to illustrate this framework. This research lays a foundation for further work on situated interpretation agents.

This paper focuses on an effort to represent the form and style of the traditional Malay houses (TMH) in a digital form to enable proper coding and compilation of the various built forms in a computing environment. In order to develop the data structure to code the form and styles of the houses, the scope of the study is currently limited to the original TMH of the bumbung panjang (long roof) type in which the key features of the houses were easily discernible from the side view. The digital representations of the houses are in the form of a database of construction elements with construction and addition rules to recreate the style of all the various bumbung panjang built forms. With this systematic programming approach, a digital representation of the traditional Malay house could be recalled and created within seconds.

In 1990, due to the traditional architecture design and construction method difficult to build the complicated and non-geometry free-form Fish Structure in Barcelona, architect Frank Gehry started learn from the field of aerospace to utilize CAD/CAM technology in design and manufacture process. He created the free-form fish model in CAD system and exported the digital CAD model data to CAM machine (RP and CNC) to fabricate the design components, and finally assembled on the site. Gehry pioneered in the new digital design process in using CAD/CAM technology or so-called digital fabrication. It becomes an important issue recently as the CAD/CAM technology progressively act as the new digital design media in architectural design and construction process (Ryder et al., 2002; Kolarevic, 2003). Furthermore, in the field of architecture professional, some commercial computer systems had been developed on purpose of standardizes the digital design process in using CAD/CAM fabrication such as Gehry Technologies formed by Gehry Partners; SmartGeometry Group in Europe and Objectile proposed by Bernard Cache. Researchers in the research field like Mark Burry, Larry Sass, Branko Kolarevic, Schodek and others are enthusiastic about the exploration of the role of CAD/CAM fabrication as new design media in design process (Burry, 2002; Schodek et al., 2005; Lee, 2005).
