How Verbalization Influences Design Cognition? A Methodological Study 语言化如何影响设计认知?方法论研究

The concurrent verbalization would affect not only the normal design behaviors but also the perceptual interactions between designers and their own sketches, while limited by short-term memory, video/audio retrospective protocols may probably induce some selective of memory trace and ambiguous verbal data, resulting in a lower accuracy of reports. This research focuses on examining the validity of video/audio retrospective and think aloud protocols, based on the qualitative comparison of the two methodologies. And we also want to understand the difference of the ability of collecting perceptual information between these two protocols. Moreover the segment and coding scheme for the drawings are primitively developed.

Greencity: A Cognitive Game 绿色:一款认知游戏

The project is about simulation of a sustainable urban scenario, which is developed as a game, that would also serve as a pedagogical tool for sustainability in urban context. The interface is a simulation based city-building game, where the player acts as a townplanner focuses on building a bigger city, while the game design aims at developing it, as a sustainable urban model. This is achieved by encoding sustainable urban development concepts with the sequence of simulation (development) process, through which the game operates sensitively towards sustainability.

Recently, more and more researchers dedicated in the development of human computer interaction for CAD systems, such as gestural input of three dimensional coordinates (Lee, Hu, and Selker, 2005), flexible manipulation of NURBS objects (Cohen, Markosian, Zeleznik, Hughes, and Barzel, 1999; Emmerik, 1990), and the creation of force feedback (Wu, 2003). These research results indicated that the more intuitive control the device can provide in modeling process, the more creative solutions can be generated (Lee, Hu, and Selker, 2005; Schweikardt and Gross, 2000; Wu, 2003).

Application of Bond Graph Models to the Representation of Buildings and Their Use 键合图模型在建筑物表示中的应用及其应用

This paper presents some early research on developing a representation for buildings that has the capacity to integrate a number of disparate design domains. This representation is developed based on bond graphs. Its goal is to represent not only steady state topologies of spaces in buildings, but also building dynamics, people and other flows within those spaces.

Challenges of Using Image-Based Modeling Tool within the Architectural Design Process 在建筑设计过程中使用基于图像的建模工具的挑战

Architects and planners will increasingly have to deal with developments in urban sites where existing context is a critical part of their design considerations. It is therefore important that architects can envision the potential of emerging technologies as means to assist architectural design in the changing face of our build environment. The objective of this paper is to examine the opportunities which image-based modeling (IM) can offer to the architectural design in a context -rich urban built-environment by providing better means of representation of the design context. By drawing relations from the available precedents and the research findings, the paper provides insights into how IM application can create stronger visual awareness of the context, in order to assist design within such condition. This paper shows that the reliability of the IM models in terms of geometric accuracy and rendering quality decreases as the physical scale of the subject increases. The best result is generated from modeling small objects in studio environment as compare to creating larger architectural objects in exterior conditions.

Confronting the Challenges of Computational Design Instruction 面对计算设计教学的挑战

Many architects understand that learning to program can be a challenge, but assume that time and practice are the only barriers to performing well enough at it. However, research from computer science education does not support this assumption. Multinational studies of undergraduate computer science programs reveal that a significant number of students in their first and second year of full-time instruction still have serious misconceptions about how computer programs work and an inability to design programs of their own. If computer science students have trouble learning to think and express themselves computationally, what does this say about architects' chances of learning to program well? Moreover, if common problems have been identified, can architectural educators learn anything from findings in computer science education research? In order to determine if this research is relevant to architecture, the author conducted a pilot study of architecture students consisting of program analysis and conceptual knowledge tests. The study found that student performance was poor in ways similar to those revealed in the computer science education research. Because architects face similar challenges as computer science majors, this suggests that the discipline could benefit from more investment in educational collaborations. In addition, empirical research – from architecture as well as other fields – must play a more substantial role in helping architects learn computational thinking and expression.
