In this paper, we will discuss the system environment that supports management and conservation works for historical landscape and architecture. The proposed system enables both 3D map based spatial data management in urban scale and VR model based landscaping in street scale in one Web system. Moreover users can share their comments in those 3D spaces at any locations and any time. We set up this system for the historical City of Kanazawa. The system is gong to be assessed in the actual landscape planning project.

Innovative media made a varied representation of urban and architectural spaces. However, the interaction between human and the space requires other new media to present. In this research, based on experts’ opinions about future space and lifestyle, we create a creative scenario and produce a video through video camera, digital image process, computer animation. In addition, virtual studio, camera matching and motion capture are added to simulate how people would interact with the spaces in the city life.

How can we provide computational supports for product designers to actively utilize existing styles as driving force to achieve new designs? For a new style that can take the advantage from existing styles, we surveyed Case-Based Design and Case-Based Reasoning systems for product design and found discouraging results. We employ Learning Classifier Systems, a machine-learning paradigm, to perform automatic style classification. These classified styles are used to evolve new styles of designs.

Development of the knowledge-sharing sheet system for landscape design management

In a public design, such as a landscape, it is important that the information on the design process be shared among the planners, the administration, and the citizens, and to continue the design work with consensus. A landscape design proposal cannot be reasonably evaluated from only the result of a design since the decision-making process would not be sufficiently explained. Therefore, designers are required to record and store several design documents during the design process. The development of a knowledge management technique is desirable in order to facilitate the sharing of the project information in the designer’s group. The authors have researched knowledge management in a landscape design process, developed a heuristic knowledge-sharing tool that aids decisionmaking by consensus in a design process. This tool is a sheet system based on XML (extensible markup language). It allows the user to retrieve knowledge from a similar design project, and to customize the formats of a sheet according to the design process.

We suggest a new method using GPS to investigate human activities in an urban area. The time and space data of tourists’ migration in a specific tourist area from GPS are focused on. The data are visualized on GIS so that ‘Nigiwai’ activity can be analyzed including notion of time. From the analysis, places where pedestrians tend to stay longer or move slower, and those where they don’t, are found. As a case study, we analyze activity in Kamakura City using the suggested method, and examine the possibilities of application for the urban space design.

Architecture as a Reference for the Development of A Cad Lighting Tool

As light is increasingly perceived a factor of quality of urban life, it is not surprising that cultural heritage buildings and even civil engineering works are being more eften illuminated at night. The designers of the projetcs are revealing a nocturnal vision of the buildings which is often a reflection of the architecture : rhythm, pattern, evenness, symmetry, composition, axes, and so on. The idea of developping a "lighting-modeller" is based upon this assertion. Thus, if we express the needs in terms of functionalities, we can conclude that the hierarchical structure of the architectural edifice can fit in with a "lighting-structure". As a result, concepts like hierarchy, linking, grouping, networking, linearity-polarity, are the basis of the objects and functions that are effective for the great majority of buildings and projects. This "linghting-modeller" can then lead beyond its simulation capabilities to become a design conception tool : hypothesis and variants are quickly realized and tested, and technical data (illumination data, visual comfort) can be obtained as well.

Implicit Handling of Geometric Relations in an Existing Modeler
Pub Date : 2003-05-01 DOI: 10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.613

This paper presents a constraint-based modeling system, integrated into a widely used CAD modeler. Using a notification mechanism, the system records the precision functions called by the user in order to maintain geometric relations between points locations and source objects. These relations are stored in a directed graph which allows an automatic update of the model.

Three Approaches of The Use of Image to Assist Architectural Design
Pub Date : 2003-05-01 DOI: 10.52842/conf.caadria.2003.183

The image is the support of ideas search in the whole design phase. The definition of assistance tools, by using the image, seems to be applicable whatever the stage of the process of architectural design is. This article presents three approaches, which intend to study the contribution of the image inside of the architectural design process. The first approach rests on the idea that architects use external references as generating elements of new project ideas and that it is possible to organize this referential knowledge by taking the image as structuring entity of this knowledge. The two other approaches intend to use image to support the formulation of information designer's needs in more advanced phases of the design process. The identified needs are those of the architect who searches a particular information in order to justify or to perform some choices, during the act of conception.

Implicit or explicit coordination of virtual teams in building design

This paper describes the conclusions of a reflection driven by a virtual team, composed of three research teams (one in computing at LORIA, one in telecommunications at France Telecom R&D, and a last one in building construction and design at CRAI) in the context of a common project. The topic of this project is the coordination of a virtual team in the context of a virtual enterprise, with experiments in the field of building construction. More precisely, our goal is to define a model of cooperative work allowing the partners of a building construction to coordinate their efforts in an efficient way.

My name is wjm@mit.edu (though I have many aliases), and I am an flâneur. I hang out on the network. The keyboard is my cafe. Each morning I turn to some nearby machine - my modest personal computer at home, a more powerful workstation in one of the offices or laboratories that I frequent, or a laptop in a hotel room-to log into electronic mail. I click on an icon to open an "inhox" filled with messages from round the world-replies to technical questions, queries for me to answer, drafts of papers, submissions of student work, appointments, travel and meeting arrangements. hits of business, greetings. reminders, chitchat, gossip, cornplaints, tips, jokes, flirtation. I type replies immediately, then drop them into an "otubox," from which they are forwarded automatically to the appropriate destinations. (Note the scare quotes. "Box" is a very loose metaphor. and I will come back to that later.) If I have time before I finish gulping my coffee. I also check the wire services and a couple of specialized news services to which I subscribe, then glance at the latest weather report. This ritual is repeated whenever I have a spare moment during the day.
