The visibility of speckle correlation fringes is studied in the case of a longitudinal displacement of the photographic plate between the two exposures. If the two speckle patterns are recorded at a large distance from the ground glass, the fringe visibility varies in the Fourier plane. It is high in the center and at the edge, and very low in the intermediate zone. The same experiment is repeated with the difference that the photographic plate is now quite near the ground glass. In this case the diameter of the central zone of high visibility fringes is related to the angular width of the Fourier spectrum of the ground glass.

This paper deals with the evaluation of fringe irradiance distribution in time-average hologram interferometry of periodic, non sinusoidal vibrations represented by the square of a Jacobian elliptic function [Sn(u| m)]. Analysis has been done by considering the effect of motion on coherence. The techniques of holographic addition and substraction have been applied to extend the amplitude measurement range. Graphical representation of the fringe irradiance distribution in the reconstructed image is given in all the cases.

Light scattering from a rough surface is approached by a vectorial method applying the Lorentz reciprocity principle. The derived theory rediscovers the fact, already pointed out by Rayleigh, that the scattered field vanishes for p-polarisation at a scattering angle depending on the refractive index of the illuminated material. Moreover it also gives an easy interpretation for the discrepancy generally observed between the measured values and those computed from the simplified theory. Experimental indicatrices of the light scattered from polished glass surfaces lead to a surface index of refraction which is much lower than the bulk index of silicate glasses, but nearer to the bulk index of silica free glasses. This result is consistent with the assumption, derived from other experiments, that a polished silicate glass surface is coated with a thin silica film.

The paper describes a method which allows the accurate prediction of the fringe localization in holographic interferometry, in the case of objects moving as a whole. The method uses the optical path concept; it is valid either in the case of spherical illumination or in the case of plane illumination. Several applications are emphasized: translations and rotations of plane and prismoid objects, with spherical illumination. Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results.

Speckle patterns are produced by random interference when coherent lights scattered by a diffuse surface pass through an optical system, and their statistical properties are controlled with the change of the optical system. Using this property, a speckle random pattern with some desired statistical characteristics can be obtained, and applied to now optical techniques.

The refraction of spherical wavefronts through a system of arbitrarily inclined planar surfaces is theoretically considered and general expressions for evaluation of aberrations developed. The formulae developed are applied towards computing aberrations caused individually by a single inclined plane parallel plate, single wedge prism, and two separated wedge plates. The studies carried out are helpful in proper design of flat plates refraction system for either complete elimination of a particular aberration or their balancing for optimal performance or for compensation of residuals in a given optical system.

The high power ruby lasers with an amplifier chain must be protected of the light returns towards the oscillator. After description of the most used devices, we show that it is possible to use a process mixing an saturable absorber and a prism polarizer followed by a plate retarder. We are leading to observe again the transmission curves of saturable glasses RG715 type from Schott, versus lightning and time. The transmission factors derived from this studies are compared to be measures done with a 80 MW ruby laser. With anti-reflection coatings on the optical elements, the transmission factor of the direct laser wave is 75% whereas the extinction ratio of the return wave is 2.10-5.

The imperfection of centering methods is a cause of the limited performance of high precision optical systems. We have reviewed a few methods which allow to align the center of curvature of all lenses of a system along the same axis. Some apparatus, very well developped technically, lead to very high precisions, and allow a partial or even sometimes complete automation.

Power is radiated from any imperfection in an optical dielectric rod transmission line, causing signal loss and crosstalk. On the other hand power can be fed into optical waveguides only at discontinuities. A survey is given on the radiation and transmission properties of six inhomogeneities in single mode optical waveguides: a free end, a gap, an axes offset, a step in diameter, a corner and a bend. Each problem is illustrated by a picture of the electromagnetic field showing constant amplitude and constant phase contours which have been measured using microwave models. Comments are given an the theoretical methods used to analyze the discontinuities and some results of the analysis are mentioned.
