This text aims to present a group of ceramics belonging to large containers for conservation or storage, conventionally known as dolia. Recovered during the fi rst excavation campaign carried out under a research project in Archaeology (PIPA), named GUIFARQ - Guifões Archaeological Research Project, they come from four distinct stratigraphic units framed in the Late Antiquity. The defi ning features of the multiple fragments exhumed, belonging to different vessels, and the contextual relationship attested with other materials, with well-defi ned chronologies, will be explored to understand aspects related to the dynamics of occupation of the Castro in that period. In parallel, interpretative proposals will also be put forward for the documented occurrences in the light of the new contextualized data and the comparison with other similar material previously recovered.

Despite prescriptions against gambling, the Islamic contexts of al-Andalus have shown not a few testimonies of the so-called board games (tāb), which oppose two people. Also in the Castle of Silves, a place occupied at least since Late Antiquity, with periods of cultural fl ourishing between the 8th and the mid-13th century, emerged, in the Muslim levels excavated directed by one of us (RVG), game boards, in portable stone supports, but also fi xed, engraved on fl oors. Discoid game marks, made in stone, ceramic or bone, with different dimensions, as other game pieces made in those same materials were also exhumed, which would have been part of board games. Although numerous game boards are known, it is not uncommon for those, from the Middle Ages or earlier, to which a safe chronology can be attributed, which does not occur with the examples from Castelo de Silves, which come from strata and precise locations. Playing has pedagogics, competitive, inter-active, strategic, ethics, creative, ludic, emotional or cognitive, but also oracular, even ritual implications, and are a cultural identifi er, given it handles with symbols, and can often constitute a metaphor for aspects of human life.

The discovery in 2021 of a new epigraph in the Numantia Site-Museum allowed us to tackle again the study of Numantine epigraphy. After an initial study in which a series of bibliographical errors and confusions accumulated over the years were perceived, we produced a new corpus in which all the documented fi nds are included, with updated information in accordance with current epigraphic studies. All of this is based on the premise of creating a very useful tool for the researcher, by presenting in a single work all the information available on the known pieces.

The roman baths of S. Pedro do Sul, animated by a thermal hot spring, began to be built in the fi rst half of the 1st century. The original building was demolished and replaced by another at the beginning of the second century, which has lasted until today. It has undergone several extensions and successive transformations over the centuries. We now present a proposal for the revision of its chronology, having into account the archaeological excavations carried out in recent years.

This text aims to present the Archaeological Heritage Charter of the current Municipal Master Plan of Porto (MMPP), discussing both its limits and possibilities. To this end, we will focus on reviewing an earlier version of the charter and explain how the new safeguarded archaeological areas were defi ned. By looking at the Porto 2030 Strategy defi ned at the MMPP, in which different city models/policies were discussed such as a smart city or green city, the importance of considering the concept of the deep city is emphasized. That is, a city model that values the mutability of spaces and their temporal dimension as an intrinsic characteristic of urban spaces and, therefore, understands the archaeological remains as resources to promote the quality of the urban spaces, the well-being of the community, and the attractiveness of the territory. It is from this perspective that the remains and other traces supporting the archaeological safeguarded areas are briefl y presented, demonstrating their multi-temporal character and highlighting their scientifi c, heritage and urban value

Two rare 17th century human prostheses were found during archaeological excavations in Lisbon, one of them exhumed from an inhumation grave in Carmo Church and the other from a well, reused as cesspit, in the Santana Convent. The first corresponds to a thumb distal part, made in silver and the other to four teeth (upper incisors), and produced in ivory, probably from elephant. Since early times most human societies gave huge importance to its members’ body aesthetics and bodily conditions. However, those aspects, resulting mainly from economic and social factors, perhaps even religious, would be exacerbated, especially among the political, military and religious elites, from the 16th century onwards, where it was intended to identify the look of each person with their social and material condition.

Taking as a pretext the publication of two graphic documents concerning the forgotten Hisn of Coina-a-Velha (S. Lourenço de Azeitão), the authors synthesize the available information about this medieval fortifi cation, in its Islamic and Christian course. Although the testimonies of occupation are more remote, the architectural structure reveals a castle built by Muslim forces, around the 9th or 10th century, which survived after being incorporated into the space of the Christian kingdom. The last military events occurred in 1184 and 1191, both with harsh consequences on the fortifi cation, which must have been defi nitively abandoned in the early 13th century.
