The size of traditional microstrip antenna is too large for some handset applications, and the bandwidth of typical planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is not wide enough. In this paper a PIFA structure with slot ground has been developed, which provides wider bandwidth and higher gain but with minimized size. The proposed antenna structure provides seven times bandwidth and 1.1 dB higher gain compared with typical PIFA, and the size of radiate patch has been reduced at the same time. This structure is very suitable for radio frequency handset applications.

In this paper, a design of compact W-band planar Quasi-Yagi antenna is presented. The proposed antenna is fed by 50 Ohm coplanar waveguide with a broad-band balun in order to convert from unbalanced grounded-coplanar waveguide (G-CPW) mode into balanced coplanar strip line (CPS) mode. This antenna is realized on a high dielectric constant substrate, GaAs-relative dielectric permittivity of 12.9, that's compatible with active devices and circuits. Using the truncated ground plane as a reflector, the proposed antenna has a broad relative bandwidth of 18.07% with its return loss better than -10 dB, front to back ratio is 15.6 dB and 6.08 dBi of gain at 94 GHz. This antenna can be widely applied in wireless communication systems, active phased array antenna or millimeter-wave imaging systems.

Using ultra-high-speed electro-absorption modulator (EAM) we developed analog optical transmitters. In a system-on-package (SOP) EAM module the module was co-packaged with a low noise amplifier (LNA) and RF matching circuit. The analog performance of modules was investigated in 60 GHz two-tone test for intermodulation measurements.

For many millimeter-wave phased array applications, system complexity and high implementation cost remains as its key limiting factors. These issues arise because of the intricacy of feeding networks and large amounts of RF circuitry that is required. This paper presents a method of sparse array optimization for millimeter-wave applications through the use of a genetic algorithm. By applying directive radiating elements for high resolution applications, the initial number of elements can be greatly reduced, helping to simplify the architecture in terms of feeding networks. This method demonstrates a 98.5% reduction in the total number of radiating elements while maintaining a peak sidelobe level below -15 dB, offering a drastic cost reduction on the overall system.

Spectral-domain approach is adopted in this paper to analyze the dispersion characteristics of microstrip lines with finite conductor strip thickness based on an approximate model. In the model, the thick conductor strip is replaced by two parallel strips without thickness considering the skin-effect of high-frequency currents. The dyadic Green's functions needed in the analysis are obtained by spectral-domain immittance approach. Some numerical results are presented and show good validity.

The emerging active millimeter wave imaging technology has the potential to yield much more information when one has control over the illumination parameters such as angle and frequency. In this paper, we propose using image fusion techniques to process multispectral millimeter wave images in order to improve the image quality. Three pixel level fusion methods, based on band ratioing, wavelet transform, and principle component analysis, have been applied to multispectral images of two test objects, captured by an experimental active millimeter wave imaging setup. The results show that multispectral image fusion successfully improves the spatial content of the object of interest.

Bused on analyzing the basic characteristics of mobile satellite channel at Ka-band, the specific impact of rain attenuation, as well as fading and shadowing are taken into account and a comprehensive simulation model is proposed. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator of rain fade channel is design and implemented based on field programmable gate array (FPGA), which can provide rain attenuation prediction under different rainfall conditions whose statistics (e.g. distribution of attenuation, distribution of fade durations) are almost identical to those of measured data by using time series generator. Meanwhile, the bit-error rate (BER) performance of mobile satellite channel at Ka-band in different weather condition is evaluated with simulation results, which proves that the simulator is reasonable and valid.

70-90 GHz integrated receive and transmit modules with sub-harmonic frequency translation were developed using a GaAs MMIC chip set. These have a reported -3 dB bandwidth above 9 GHz and 6 GHz respectively for the down-converter and up-converter. With a common 39.25 GHz LO frequency, the modules are well suited for the RF transceivers of full-duplex wireless communication systems operating in both 71-76 and 81- 86 GHz bands using the lower or upper side-band conversion in each chosen (receive or transmit) direction.
