The research on thrown mobile robots, which attract more attentions recently, are focused on the design and manufacture of low-cost, miniature, and high tolerance to the impact forces. This paper presents a novel design based on flexible structures, which is composed of flexure hinges and structure boards, to improve the anti-impact capability of a thrown robot. The flexible structures can absorb most of the shock energy via deformation of the rubber hinges and the plastic boards. The cheap flexible structures can be combined together to form a robot platform easily and flexibly. Therefore, the overall cost of the robot can be reduced a lot. Plenty of experiments showed that the low-cost thrown robot based on flexible structures, which was 1.2kg weight, could sustain the impact loading when being dropped down from 6m height.

The data of hybrid production process is miscellaneous and multivariate, and the acquisition of multivariate data has become the bottleneck of production control and management. Advanced control technology and automatic identification technology provide effective means to acquire real-time data of hybrid production process. In this paper, the model of real-time data acquisition is presented, which provides an effective solution to the data acquisition problem of the hybrid production process. In the model, DCS, fieldbus, barcode and RFID are used to acquire various production data, and instruments, barcodes and RFID tags are uniformly coded. The multivariate production information with unified form is also acquired. At last, the model is validated by the case study of PVC gloves production.

In this paper we construct a hybrid moving object detection system. In this system, we first use the frame difference method to extract key frames in a given video sequence, then use the optical flow method and the HSV background subtraction method to extract the moving objects, respectively. We propose two hybrid methods: Improved Optical Flow method and Improved HSV Background Subtraction method. Experimental results have shown that our proposed system has strong robustness and be effective to detect moving objects in various conditions. We also introduce a human-computer interaction tool for selecting the focus area for users. This system will largely benefit for real-world video surveillance applications.

Face recognition is a very challenging problem in computer vision. In this paper, Speeded up Robust Features (SURF), a scale and rotation invariant interesting point descriptor, is further explored for face recognition. Specially, a novel technique, Cell Similarity is proposed to make improvement based on SURF in face recognition. In the meantime, different cell division strategies are proposed and evaluated in this paper, which move towards revealing the inner relation and essence in face recognition. We not only obtain good results in ORL dataset and our Lab dataset (aligned face), but also speed up the original version by reducing matching time. Moreover, in order to further deal with rotation situation, another new loopy Cell Similarity method in these two datasets is evaluated, and advantages and disadvantages of different implementations are also discussed.

Coherence enhancing diffusion filtering deals with the problems of completion of interrupted line and enhancement of flow-like features such as fingerprints. It is steered by structure tensor which is generally calculated by component-wise convolving between gradient of an image and Gaussian kernel. However, the Gaussian kernel cannot preserve the image structure well. To handle this problem, we propose a novel structure tensor based on connected component analysis (CCA) and apply it to CED filtering. The CCA based structure tensor (CCA-ST) is constructed by combining Gaussian kernel and CCA map. Although CCA is a simple and intuitive method, the experimental results show that CCA-ST provides more faithful results than linear structure tensor.

A mathematical model of a solar module is presented. This model takes into account solar model temperature and solar radiation. The experimental data of a solar module under natural environment condition (NEC) have been obtained to determine the model parameters. The experimental results are compared with those calculated by using a mathematical model. It shows that the mathematical model accurately simulates the current-voltage characteristics of the solar module under the NEC and therefore is suitable for photovoltaic system design and performance analysis.

This paper investigates motion estimation and compensation techniques over spatial domain on wavelet video coding. In particular, we concentrate on high-band signals on prediction error which are key factors for a high coding efficiency, especially with wavelet transform. Moreover, we analyze the video coding performance according to computational complexity and motion estimation error. Finally, four types of motion estimation and compensation methods are investigated and we observe that overlapped block motion compensation and mesh-based algorithm generate smoother motion field.

The use of robotics in distributed monitoring applications requires wireless sensors that are deployed efficiently with an awareness of the information gain, communication constraints, resource allocation and coordination, and energy utilization. In this paper, we address the estimation of a parameterized spatial field distribution with a group of mobile robots sampling adaptively and using a statistically-aware algorithm. The proposed work investigates the use of different nonlinear filters, such as the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and some variants of it, and the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), both using adaptive sampling, so as to improve the speed and accuracy of the overall field distribution estimation scheme. The results from an extensive simulation work show that different variants of the standard EKF and the standard UKF can be used to improve the accuracy of field estimate and the main objective of this paper is to seek a practical trade-off between the desired field estimation accuracy and the computational load needed for this purpose.

Impedance model contains a lot of information that can indicate performance of battery. Therefore, establishment of accurate impedance model is very important. In this paper, impedance model of Li-ion battery is examined by electrochemical mechanisms analysis and experimental measurement. The basis for the form of the model has been linked to internal processes of the battery and validated using experimental data. The impedance behavior during individual discharge cycles as well as over its cycle life is obtained. The proposed model will greatly help research on circuit simulation, multi-cell battery analysis, battery test and monitoring, prognostics and battery health management.

Supervised feature extraction algorithms usually require lots of labeled samples to achieve good performance. However, labeling the samples is often time-consuming and even impractical. Therefore, in this paper, a semi-supervised manifold local Fisher discriminant analysis (SMLFDA) is proposed to take advantage of unlabeled samples as well as labeled samples. The proposed algorithm utilizes local scatter matrix and manifold structure to extract the information from labeled and unlabeled samples, respectively, which significantly improves the accuracy of successive classification application when labeled samples are insufficient. In addition, an exponential form weighting coefficient is proposed to further improve the classification performance. Experiments of hyperspectral classification demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed semi-supervised feature extraction algorithm.
