This paper discusses an effort carried out by the University of Malaya (UM) to engage with, facilitate and nurture sustainable development efforts in a neighbouring community. The Kondo Rakyat community in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur is five minutes away from the UM campus. It is a low-income urban community living in DBKL low-cost flats nestled within an upper middle-income neighbourhood of high-rise condominiums. Efforts were made to launch sustainability initiatives such as composting, the production of eco-enzymes, kitchen gardens and green bazaars with the hope that the community will be able to share the skills learnt and experience gained with other similar communities elsewhere. This paper will show that one of the most vital criteria in an effort such as this is the ability of the project leader to facilitate discussions between disparate collaborators so as to guide the project to some success.

This study seeks to investigate the relationship between a) personal willingness towards environmental activities, b) attitudes towards personal responsibility, and c) attitudes toward the faculty’s responsibility for creating a sustainable environment, and intention to engage in eco-campus environmental activities and green initiatives. The research used multiple regressions for data analysis in an attempt to achieve the objective across a sample of 374 students in a public university in Sabah, Malaysia. Their participation was purely voluntary. The construct validity was assessed by computing the exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotations. Empirical results revealed that personal willingness towards environmental activities, and attitudes towards the faculty’s responsibility for creating a sustainable environment significantly affect students’ intention to engage with eco-campus environmental activities and green initiatives. The first was found to have the strongest effect. The research provides a unique perspective of students’ intention to engage with eco-campus environmental activities and green initiatives, which has previously not been much covered in the Malaysia context. The measurement produced can be used as a research tool for more exploratory and explanatory research regarding the investigated issues. Direction for future research is also presented.

In view of the mounting evidence on the destruction of environmental quality and loss of cultural heritage as a result of technology development, various organizations have seen the dire need for sustainable development which can be acquired through education on sustainability. In institutions of higher education, engineering is one of the programmes that are active in seeking to integrate sustainability into its curricula. Several researchers have conducted researches on means of incorporating sustainability into engineering curricula and such means can generally be categorized into the horizontal or vertical approach. An integration approach is considered horizontal when the sustainability or environmental component is intertwined into the existing courses. On the other hand, integration through a specialized or stand-alone course on sustainability is considered as vertical approach. Both of these approaches are used and there is no consensus on which approach works the best. The existing literature has shown evidence on engagement of these two approaches by the American, European and Australian Institutions of Higher Education. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there has not been any similar study for the Malaysian IHE. Therefore, this research was conducted to identify the current sustainability integration approach for 3 traditional engineering disciplines, namely Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 5 Malaysian IHE. An analysis of the engineering syllabi was conducted to identify if horizontal or vertical approach is used by the selected IHE for these 3 engineering disciplines. The result showed that horizontal approach was more commonly employed compared to vertical approach. This finding concocted with opinion of some of the researchers that sustainability education through horizontal approach may be more suitable for engineering programme which encourages interdisciplinary learning

PAPERLESS OMR SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION IN UMS 在ums中实现无纸化管理系统
Pub Date : 2015-12-30 DOI: 10.51200/jbimpeagard.v1i1.3145

It is vital that less paper be used in the running of the education system in order to manage a university in a sustainable way. OMR is a very important system of marking and evaluating students objectively and therefore vital for the management of a university education system. The OMR system should therefore be implemented in a sustainable way but without compromising the quality of education offered and if possible to enhance the educational aspect of the sustainable system, instead of deteriorating the quality of education as a result of the sustainable implementation. A system using OMR was successfully implemented at University Malaysia Sabah virtually without using any paper compared to previous OMR implementations. The paperless implementation is not only sustainable, but is so efficient that it can be adopted to detect lateness and absenteeism. The only sheets of paper that were used were the OMR sheets that were recycled. The collection of the OMR sheets was finally done using envelopes that were arranged according to the first letter of the names of students. It eases the collection and later recycling of the OMR sheets. To optimise the value of the recycling process, a feedback system was implemented in the tests and therefore enhances the pedagogical impact of the OMR system. The discipline required for the sustainable implementation of the paperless OMR system is treated as part of the practical aspects of ethics and law in real life situations, which is part of the course of Ethics and Law for Engineers for which environmental sustainability is part of the curriculum.

The Kelab Sahabat UM Network is an initiative by UMCares – The Community & Sustainability Centre of the University of Malaya to reach out to the primary and secondary schools in its vicinity. Activities included under this programme range to sports skills, language and drama grooming to robotics workshops and competitions. Most of these programmes are conducted through collaborations with either internal (UM) or external (NGO or private business) parties so as to ensure a broad network of experts who can enhance the education and experiences of the school youth. Kelab Sahabat UM was launched in early 2014 but constant monitoring of its programmes and progress has led to some evolution in its offering. Programmes must now encompass a second session where participants can demonstrate knowledge gained or skills learnt. This might be in the form of a performance or participation in a competition. At the end of 2014, it was also decided that the concept of a green school would be a useful avenue through which community engagement can be coupled with engagement for sustainability. The details of this programme and the multiplier effect observed as a result of the implementation of the Network thus far will be discussed in this paper.
