The perception of the women's inferiority in society has created significant issues in the form of oppression of women. Furthermore, literary works portrayed these issues to raise awareness because it has an important role as one of the means to address the issue of oppression against women. Shobha Rao's novel Girls Burn Brighter is a feminist literary work that highlights the oppression of women. This study aims to examine the oppression of main female characters as revealed in the novel through literary devices. This study used a sociological approach since the novel raise the social phenomena of female oppression which is examined through the perspective of feminist literary criticism. The researcher applies Iris Young's theory of oppression to explore the forms of oppression and Kimberly Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality to look out the factors of oppression experienced by main female characters. The results of this study found that the main female characters, namely Poornima and Savitha, experience oppression in the form of marginalization, exploitation, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. Their experiences of oppression manifest in the form of marginalization of job opportunity, sexual and labor exploitation, powerlessness to speak up, cultural imperialism of the dowry system, and physical and sexual violence. These forms of oppression are influenced by intersecting factors such as gender, social class, political power, skin color, and dominant culture. Gender inequality is the term used to describe how men and women are treated differently. The target individual or group typically suffers or is disadvantaged as a result of inequality. This study's goal is to describe several types of gender inequality as they appear in Mansour Fakih's theory. Aside from that, consider how female characters approach gender inequity. Using data from the dramas A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Heart in the Ground by Doughlas Hill, this study adopts a feminist methodology and Mansour Fakih's concept of gender inequality. Literary criticism is the technique employed. Then, information is gathered by reading and documenting information that is pertinent to the theory and research issues. The results obtained from this study are (1) The two dramas each have three types of gender inequality. In Heart in The Ground there are subordination, violence and double burden. Three different types of women's inequality such as subordination, stereotypes, and marginalization are present in Hansberry's second play, A Raisin in the Sun. (2) Four ways to achieve their rights: rebelling, threatening, and talking about it, focusing on their goal. Keywords: Feminism, Gender Inequality, Drama

Everyone may participate in online discussions in this digital age. One of the platforms they can use is Quora. They exchanged their ideas and got information from other users on the COVID-19 vaccine controversy, which has been widely discussed since the epidemic. They can reveal (real account) or conceal (anonymous account) their identity. Then, to avoid debate between users, speakers must use politeness strategies adapted to CMC. This study aims to identify differences in politeness between real/non-anonymous and anonymous in the comments column on Quora in discussions about the Covid-19 vaccine controversy. This research is included in the descriptive qualitative research with a pragmatic approach used to describe linguistic data related to the forms of politeness strategies found in the analysis. Then, the data were taken from netizens’ comments on the five discussions users most discussed from January 2021 to September 2022. The researcher used the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987), which has been adjusted by Nikzam (2013) and Park (2008), to analyze data on the CMC context. This study found that the most widely used politeness strategies were negative ones, followed by positive politeness, off-record, and bald-on record. However, the researcher also found that speakers use linguistic devices to convey interpersonal and affective attitudes in online communication. The tools used are abbreviations and emoticons that aim to simulate gestures and facial expressions (Park, 2008). Further research is needed to determine politeness in CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) on different discussion platforms.

The moral values are an issue that will continue to be discussed. The moral value emphasized in this research focused on the value of responsibility. The researcher chooses this moral value because The Christmas Pig is a fantasy novel that emphasizes how humans, especially children, should keep and take responsibility for their actions. This study aims to identify the moral value of responsibility along with the development of the characters’ sense of responsibility in the novel entitled The Christmas Pig written by J.K. Rowling. This research is a literary criticism study with structuralism approach by paying attention to intrinsic elements of the story. The study uses the concept of responsibility from Linda and Eyre, which distinguishes responsibility into four parts: responsibility to parents, responsibility to society, responsibility to self, and responsibility to others. The results of this study indicate that there are three kinds of moral values of responsibility portrayed, namely responsibility to parents, responsibility to society, and responsibility to self. Each of these moral values of responsibility is found in the main characters’ and minor characters, namely Jack and Holly. Furthermore, the development of the characters’ sense of responsibility is focused on Jack and Holly. Jack’s development of the characters’ sense of responsibility is portrayed through his action toward CP. Jack, who is initially being rude to CP, becomes a responsible child and takes care of CP. Meanwhile, Holly is portrayed through her irresponsible attitude such as selfishness, disobedience, and impulsiveness, turning into a child who is responsible for society, her parents, and herself. Overall, this thesis provides a deeper understanding of the moral value conveyed in The Christmas Pig and the importance of responsibility as a fundamental aspect of human life.

ABSTRACT This research examined the deviation of maxims of politeness which produced by English lecturers and students of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in class presentation activity. Qualitative research used in this research to collect the data to explore the deviations produced during the activity. The researcher employed an observation to learn how the deviation occurred based on the fact and reality that happened during the activity. The data of the research were taken from three classes including History of English Literature, History of American Literature and English Language Teaching (ELT). The participants included in the research were three lecturers and 240 students of the fifth semester. The analysis of the data used the theory proposed by Leech (1983) that classified six maxims of politeness principles including Tact maxim, Generosity maxim, Approbation maxim, Modesty maxim, Agreement maxim and Sympathy maxim. This research found that there were 18 utterances produced by English lecturers and student of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in class presentation activity which deviated 3 maxims of politeness principles including: Tact maxim, Generosity maxim and Agreement maxim. It was expected that this research could give new insight for the readers to pay attention on the use of politeness principles. Thus, the deviation of maxims of politeness principles could be minimized and the conversation could run smoothly Keywords: Class presentation, Deviation, Politeness principles.

The phenomenon of language development in the modern era is increasingly rapid through mass media, one of which is television shows. In addition to providing information, television also provides audiovisual entertainment to attract people to enjoy it. The non-observance maxim of politeness committed by public figures can be found. In this study, the author wants to examine how the non-observance politeness maxim and its implicature is in the video TV Show" Kids Say The Darndest Things" used by the host and children as the guest star. The method used by the author in this study is descriptive qualitative by combining two main theories. Firstly, to identify the type of politeness maxim most frequently unobserved by hosts and children, the author use Leech's theory (1983). Second, analyze the conversational implicature contained in utterances of hosts and children that unobserved maxim politeness with Grice's theory (1975). As a result, the writer found 37 non-observance of politeness maxims and conversational implicatures used by hosts and children as guest stars. The modesty maxim was the most common type used in this TV show, with 27%, followed by the approbation maxim, with 22%. Then, the same percentage of tact maxim and generosity maxim with 16%. Followed by a low rate of agreement maxim of 11% and a maxim of sympathy with 8%. Racism has been a prevalent issue ever since the concept of race was known to mankind, due to this fact, a lot of kinds of racism emerged in society. This study explained the experiences of Callum and his family through the levels of racism as well as how they responded towards the racism itself in the novel Noughts + Crosses by Malorie Blackman. This study itself is a literary criticism focusing on sociological approaches by employing two theories, one by Camarra Phylis Jones named levels of racism (2000) and the second one is multimotive theory by Richman & Leary (2009). Based on the analysis of this study, the first level of Jones’ theory seems to be the most prominent out of the three which is the institutional racism, the characters in this novel were restricted or has limited access to quite a lot of government infrastructure, silenced voice, as well as small quantity of representative in power. While the personally-mediated racism manifested itself through the suspicion of minorities; especially Callum, lack of respect from the Crosses, devaluation of minorities’ capabilities, scapegoating, and dehumanization through hate crime and police brutality. In internalized racism there is also evidence of whiteness as in Lynette’s case where she believes herself to be black as well as self-devaluation by the characters themselves for example Ryan who used the slur word to his own race. Callum and his family responded with various types of response, such as Jude who is leaning towards being more aggressive after the experience of racism while Callum at least try to regain relational value within the society with relationship-promoting response as well as trying to exclude or withdraw himself from the society with avoidance or withdrawal response.

In this modern world, the phenomenon of women oppression has become more prevalent in society. Oppression against women has been embedded for generations and can really happen under any circumstances. However, this phenomenon is not only actualized in real life but is also portrayed in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s work entitled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. The aims of this study are divided into two categories: first, to identify forms of oppression experienced by women characters, Monique Grant and Evelyn Hugo, and second, to describe women characters' struggle against oppression in the novel. The approach used in this study is the sociology of literature since the novel brings up social life issues such as inequalities based on class, race, gender, and other aspects, which these issues might be examined through the perspective of liberal feminism. Additionally, the researcher uses the ‘Five Faces of Oppression’ theory by Irish Marion Young to identify forms of oppression. The results of this study revealed that Monique and Evelyn experienced oppression due to their gender and racial background. Monique was marginalized in the workplace, whereas Evelyn was subjected to the five faces of oppression mentioned by Young, both in the private and public spheres. However, despite the oppression that Monique and Evelyn experienced, they were struggling for their freedom and rights in order to take control of their own lives and careers. Their struggles are intertwined with liberal feminism, a theory that advocates for changing laws, policies, and institutions in order to eliminate gender equality in all aspects of life.

In June 2022, people in the United States, especially celebrities were shocked by the news of the murder. The manager of actor and rapper Ludacris, Chaka Zulu, was accused as the murderer. With that accusations, he receive various negative reaction from the public. Chaka’s legal team immediately held a press conference to sway public opinion and in that occasion, it could be found social actor representation. Among the many pieces of research regarding social actor representation, research that investigate spoken discourse is rarely carried out. Therefore, this study aims to investigate exclusion and inclusion strategies used by lawyers when representing social actors in press conference. This study uses van Leeuwen’s social actor representation theory (2008). It uses a descriptive-qualitative method to ensure clear data analysis. The data were obtained from the FOX 5 Atlanta YouTube channel. This study reveals that lawyers use exclusion and inclusion. The lawyers used more inclusion than exclusion. Moreover, the most frequent sub-inclusion strategy is role allocation, as active and passive roles allow lawyers to show who is guilty and who is not. Meanwhile, the most frequent exclusion strategy is suppression, it allows lawyers to eliminate actors and emphasize others. Future studies is recommended to explore other van Leeuwen approaches. Future studies can also use other spoken discourse as research topics, for example press conference with public relation or others.
