This Earth of Mankind is a novel written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. From the story in this novel, the researcher is interested in investigating the types, functions, and purposes of impoliteness strategies and power used by European characters in This Earth of Mankind novel. This research used the descriptive qualitative research method because the data in this research are in the form of qualitative data in the form of conversation and then analyzed in the form of descriptive. The data used in this study are conversations between Europeans and Indigenous people that contain the elements of impoliteness and power contained in the novel. There are four theories used in this research. The first theory belongs to Culpeper (1996) to identify types of impoliteness. The second theory belongs to Culpeper (2011) to identify impoliteness functions. Furthermore, Beebe's (1950) and Bousfield's (2008) theories are used to understand the purpose of using power through impolite language. The first result, of this research, shows that European characters in the novel use all kinds of impoliteness according to Culpeper (1996). The types of impoliteness used are (1) direct impoliteness (Bald on record impoliteness), (2) positive impoliteness, (3) negative impoliteness, (4) sarcasm or mock politeness, and (5) withhold politeness. From the 40 data there are negative impoliteness as the most frequently used number with a total of 17 conversations. The second result of this research, according to Culpeper's theory (2011) found two impolite functions, namely affective function with a total of 22 conversations and coercive with a total of 11 conversations. The entertaining function was not found because this function usually occurs in the world of entertainment such as talk shows that use impoliteness through jokes.

Several speech disorders can interfere with the listener’s understanding in people with dysarthria. Previous research on dysarthria still covers the type and characteristics of speech. Therefore, an in-depth analysis is also needed of the phonological processes. This study aimed to find out the types of dysarthria and analyze the language disorders experienced by Luis on the YouTube channel The Accessible Van Life. This study describes Luis as suffering from dysarthria caused by severe traumatic brain injury. The data is in the form of utterances spoken by Luis on the YouTube channel The Accessible Van Life. Data analysis used the theory of Duffy (2013) to analyze the types of dysarthria. The analysis of language disorder is based on Lanier’s theory (2010), and the phonological processes is based on Waengler (2012). The results of this study indicate that there are four types of dysarthria experienced by Luis, namely hypokinetic, hyperkinetic, flaccid, and spastic. The problem that dominates Luis’s dysarthria is hypokinetic. In addition, Luis experienced language disorders in articulation, fluency, and voice, with the most dominating effect is on articulation damage. The most dominant phonological disorder in Luis’s speech is the final consonant syllable phonological disorder. This finding can be used as a reference for further studies to understand the speech disorder of dysathria sufferers.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to describe the social action forms of the main characters in the novel A Man Of The People according to Max Weber's Social Action Theory. This research is important because this novel can open a new understanding of social action theory in a political perspective through the two main characters that have different political goals based on their social actions as individuals. The theory that will be used in this research is Max Weber's social action, social action is a conceptual benchmark for examining differences and similarities, as well as causal relationships, between social processes (Damsar, 2010, p. 35) which is focused on the main characters. The approach used is a sociological approach that focuses on literary works. Because the phenomenon of social action that occurs in society is often poured into literary works (Damono, 2004, p. 12). The method of this research is literary criticism. The research data is in the form of excerpts from the contents presented through conversations and narrations as social reality and depictions of social actions carried out by the main characters in the novel. Data collection is done by viewing and recording methods to get results and then proceed with discussion. The results obtained from this study are the social action of the main characters in the novel A Man Of The People: Max Weber's sociological study, that the four types of social action can be found in the main characters in this novel and how they achieve their own purpose based on their social actions. In the Rational-Instrumental action, Mr. Nanga did this action 7 times, while Odili only used instrumental actions once. In Traditional action, it was found that there were 3 actions related to tradition or actions that were carried out from generation to generation. In the value rational action, it was found that there were 4 actions that were all carried out by Odili. And for the affective action, Odili took 6 actions. This proves that Odili's moral value is higher to achieve his goals than using more efficient instruments that are counter-humanist such as instrumental rationality like Mr. Nanga did. But Odili's goals were not fully fulfilled because his country was overthrown by the Military and his party was dismissed. Keywords: Sociology of Literature, Sociology of Max Weber, Social Actions.

Oppression often occurs in the community. It can be due to poverty or existing habits. One of the novels by Abi Dare entitled The Girl with Louding Voice is one of the novels that tells about the oppression received by the main character (Adunni). The novel is the main data source in this research. The aims are to find out what oppression Adunni is experiencing as the main character and to explain Adunni's struggles to get out of this oppression. The researcher uses a feminist critique approach with textual studies to analyze the data and apply Young’s oppression and Lerner's feminism theory. The oppression includes powerlessness, cultural imperialism, marginalization, violence, and exploitation. Adunni experienced all those things. It resulted in her having to stop her education, marry forcibly, get abused and defrauded and have many wounds all over her body. However, she never gave up because she had determination and big dreams. She believed that continuing her education to the highest level would free her from oppression. Therefore, she made several efforts, such as persuading her father, asking for help, studying and teaching, running away from home, giving resistance, avoiding certain people, refusing to get pregnant, and participating in the selection of a scholarship.

This research investigated the turn taking strategies that occurred in the first American Presidential Debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The aim was to identify the kinds of turn taking strategies used in the first American Presidential Debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as to classify the functions of the turn taking that occur in the first American Presidential Debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The researcher employed a descriptive qualitative approach because the data were derived from Donald Trump's and Joe Biden's utterances on YouTube video, which was transcribed and analyzed using Sterntörm's (2014) theory of turn taking strategy; taking the turn strategy, holding the turn strategy, and yielding the turn strategy. The data were analyzed by determining the context, categorizing the data based on the theory, analyzing and interpreting the data, then draw conclusion based on the findings. The findings revealed 35 data from Donald Trump’s utterances, with the most strategy used was alert that occurred twelve times, while he never used hesitant start strategy. On the other hand, 20 data were obtained from Joe Biden’s utterances. In fact, Joe Biden also employed alert strategy as the most utilized strategy which was the same as Donald Trump, but the occurrence was only for five times. In addition, Joe Biden did not apply four turn taking strategies which were hesitant start, metacomment, silent pause, and appealing. One important point to note is that both candidates utilized alert as the most used strategy, which has the function to interrupt the other speaker with raising the tone of his voice in order to attract the attention of the interlocutor.

This study aims to reveal the representation of religious moderation that are contained in the poem of Jalal Ad-Din Rumi in his book entitled Masnawi. Rumi is a famous poet who creates beautiful and loves poems, including love in the midst of differences, especially religious diversity, even the Ministry of Religion of Republic of Indonesia was inspired to research deeply about the concept of religious moderation which was initiated by Rumi. Intending to revealing the representation of religious moderation in Rumi's book, the researcher uses Critical Discourse Analysis theory which is used to reveal the intentions embedded in discourse, because language is not only reached as a mean of communication, but critically can be understood as a tool that embodies transparent structural relationships of domination, discrimination, power, and control. The CDA theory that is used by the researcher is Wodak’s (2001) theory that well known as the Discourse Historical Approach, by analyzing discursive strategies, discourse practices, and social practices. The finding is Rumi tended to use a predication strategy by attaching positive traits to the moderation discourse and giving negative traits to the opposite, namely extremism and unbalance. His poetry which is widely spread among people from different religions including Islam, Christ and Jew success to convey the message of religious moderation, thus, people understand and apply it well, this is proven by many people mourn on his death. In conclusion, religious moderation is represented as a very positive and good thing in Rumi's poetry in his book entitled Masnawi.

One of literary devices that can be applied to literary works is irony. The irony as literary device is a figure of speech in which the speaker’s meaning is far from the usual meaning of the words or quite the opposite. In this study, the author analyzing the irony in novel The Amulet of Samarkand, to get in-depth explanation of the types of irony in the novel, how it was portrayed and how it was connected to the plot of the story. Furthermore, this study is part of literary criticism since the researcher approach the literary work by New Criticism theory then interprets and analyze the literary work by Kennedy’s theory of irony. The theory of irony applied to analyze the irony as a literary device in the novel The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. The findings show that there are five kinds of irony in the novel; verbal irony, dramatic irony, cosmic irony, situational irony, and ironic point of view. Hence, the researcher found that each of irony works to the plot as it was play roles as an agent to move the plot to its rising action and climax, and the it works to emphasize some important point in the plot as well. The important points in the plot that emphasized by the irony such as; the naivety of Nathaniel, the discrepancy of the thing being done and its result, and the cunny nature of the demon.

Social media has become the largest means of communication used by people to share, chat, and etc. Taboo words on social media are often used for various purposes. In certain cultures or societies, taboo words may be considered something that can be offensive and embarrassing, but on the other hand, taboo words are also used to emphasize something, which means that not all taboo words are considered bad. Methodologically, this research includes qualitative descriptive research. This study aims to identify the different types and functions of taboo words in a motivator's IGTV post by using the theory of types of taboo words by Batistella (2005) and the function of taboo words by Wardhaugh (2006). The findings in this study reveal that Garyvee uses 3 types of taboo words: obscenity, epithets, and profanity. From a total of 30 data used, there are 27 obscenities, 2 epithets, 1 profanity. Of the 4 functions of taboo words, 3 functions were found: to draw attention, to show contempt, and to be provocative. The most common function found in this finding is to draw attention because in this case, taboo words are used to express the speaker's message and attract the audiences to keep paying attention to the speaker's speech.

We can see that people's action is based on what motives them that is rational or even irrational. One of the examples of the rational action in real life is when a person decides to become a migrant worker in overseas to improve the economy of their family while the irrational when one destroys stuff due to anger. That kind of action is called as social action. In literature, social action is depicted in one character's behavior whether it is related or not related to the goal of the story. The purpose of this study is to find out the depiction of social action forms of the main character and how he achieves his goal based on his social action in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag novel, whose name is Edward Kenway. This research uses one of the theories in sociology of literaturre sociology of literature from Max Weber which is social action. The methodology used is literary criticism method. Then, the data is collected by read and note the relevant data with the theory and research problems. The syntactic category is known as part of speech or word class, and it tells about the words in the sentence function. This study examined the syntactic categories used in English slogans in automotive advertisements. Practically, this study examined the types of syntactic category and how it is used in English slogans in automotive advertisements. By employing a descriptive qualitative method in which the data were analyzed using Carnie’s (2013) theory of syntactic category, the researcher took the data from the official website of several automotive brands. The researcher chose ten English slogans of automotive advertisements from America and Asia consisting of phrases and sentences which became the data of this study. The results of this study revealed that there are two kinds of phrases and sentences, including five noun phrases, one adjective phrase, three imperative sentences, and one interrogative sentence in the automotive commercials. To investigate the word function and position in English slogans, the data were described by using a tree diagram. Furthermore, it could be concluded that the mostly used phrases and sentences in English slogans in automotive advertisements were noun phrases and imperative sentences. Through the results of this study, it is suggested that the next researchers can use other objects of the study besides the automotive commercials from America and Asia. Further studies can also be conducted in English advertising slogans in other products, such as motorcycle, food, cloth, tourism, phone, beauty and other commercials.
