ABSTRACT The speech of praise and the response to a compliment is one of the interesting issues in a linguistic phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to investigate the type of strategic compliment spoken by the teacher and the type of compliment response spoken by the student to answer the compliment he received at the Al-Masduqiyah Islamic boarding school. The relationship between praise and the environment of the Islamic boarding school in this study explains that the use of language also depends on the environment. Therefore, a person with a different social background can lead to different language and word speech. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method because this research requires the selection of qualitative data for form or descriptive analysis. The participants of this study were English teachers and students at the Al-Masduqiyah Islamic boarding school. This study uses two theories, namely the theory of Wolfson (1993) and the theory of Holmes (1983). The findings of the speech of compliment and compliment responses in this study contained 66 data. In the speech of compliment which has two categories, there are 11 data compared to 55 data, while in the response from the word of compliment which has three categories, it is found that there is a comparison of data between 45, 16, and 5 data. The conclusion of this research is the word occurrence of a compliment spoken by the teacher that is based on the students' abilities, and also the compliment is able to motivate students in the learning activity. The most significant compliment response expressed by the student is the accept type. Further, the student also ignores and rejects the compliment.

Feminism has been a big issue in society since long ago. Furthermore, it is frequently discussed in the mass media. Not only that, but the issue of feminism is also often incorporated into literary works such as novels, narratives, and films. Many movies have brought gender equality matter as an element of their story. One of the ways to know that is by analyzing their discourse and language style in representing women. Therefore, the researcher used the feminist stylistics analysis theory by Mills (2005). The research was conducted on two movies from Indonesia and America with romantic genre and marriage life. The two movies titled “Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan” and “The Other Woman”. This research using the qualitative research method and constructivism, aims to get a detailed and newest result. Based on many previous types of research, this research aims to give the latest update on women’s representation in Indonesian and American marriage movies using an analysis of the language style used in the movies. The researcher also hopes to find differences and similarities in the language style used to represent women in those two movies. Research results found that women are represented differently in Indonesian and American marriage movies.
这两部电影名为“Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan”和“The Other Woman”。

The phenomenon of sexism still exists in society. Sexism comes from the negative stereotypes that assumes, one gender is more valuable than the other. In this research, sexism is manifested in the literary work, one of them Margaret Atwood's The Testaments. This research aims to describe the form of sexism experienced and it’s effects by the main characters in Margaret Atwood's The Testaments. It will be focuses on Agnes and Nicole. Then, it uses feminist literary criticism method with feminism approach. This research seeks to solve the research problems based on applying library research techniques by reading repeatedly and then taking a note. Then, the data has been obtained were analyzed using the ambivalent sexism theory proposed by Glick and Fiske. The data analysis technique uses content analysis. Content analysis is an in-depth analysis of the messages contained in a text. Furthermore, the finding data revealed sexism experienced by the main characters, including: not being allowed to read and write, obligation to cover their body, arranged marriage, women constructed in domestic roles, and living in limited freedom. Then, the effect of sexism was revealed, including sexual harassment, objectification, internalized sexism, and alienation. Furthermore, the main characters' resistance is liberation and taking a mission.

Delusions are deeply held beliefs or false impressions, even though they contradict reality and what is generally thought to be true. This study uses the theory of literary criticism because literary criticism focuses on literary works. The researcher analyzed the delusional disorder experienced by Alex using literary criticism theory with a psychological approach. This study aims to examine Alex's mental disorder in the book Made You Up using delusional theory within the scope of Literary Psychology. The researcher tries to find the dominant form of delusion experienced by the character and how the delusion affects personality development. The data is taken from the memoir Made You Up by Francesca Zappia in the form of sentences, conversations, and statements. Data were analyzed using the delusional theory by Leeser and O'Donohue. This study aims to examine as well as distinguish several types of delusions that occur. Therefore, this study will examine the sequence by sequence that occurs in the book. In this study, the results showed that Alex's delusions included threatening feelings, and having beliefs that were considered subjective. Then how do delusions affect Alex's personality development where he becomes emotional quickly, feels excessively anxious, and becomes depressed because he locks himself up in his room a lot. Some delusions are quick and immediate, while others are more enduring and persist over a long period. Keywords: literary criticism, psychology, mental disorder, delusion

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), defines trauma as an event that causes injury when a person is hit by death, sexual abuse, and others. Recovery from a traumatic event is usually a painful and lengthy process. Everyone has their reaction to dealing with the trauma they have experienced. This study aims to find out what events caused Eden's trauma and the way Eden overcame her trauma in the novel The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith. This research belongs to the category of literary criticism that uses Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis as its research approach. This study uses the trauma theory by Sigmund Freud. The source of the data in this research is the novel by Amber Smith, entitled The Way I Used To Be. This study reveals that the cause of the trauma experienced by Eden was sexual abuse by Kevin. Apart from that, other components support the increasing sense of trauma experienced by Eden. In this research, Eden's ways were also found to overcome the trauma she experienced. To overcome her trauma, Eden did several ways. Based on this research, the novel entitled The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith can be used to illustrate how to deal with trauma well. For this reason, readers can use this novel as research material with topics other than trauma issues, such as how the personality changes of Eden's character after sexual abuse occurred. This study aims to identify the widely used metaphors and analyze the meanings that construct the reality of 'life' in the literary work entitled Dreams, Spelled in Poetry (2021) by Helena Natasha. Poetry data taken is a collection of poems with the theme 'The Call.' The method used by the researcher is descriptive qualitative and combines two theories; the first is to identify the types of metaphors used by the poet in the poem with the theme 'The Call,' the researcher uses the theory of Lakoff and Johnson (2003) and to analyze the conceptual metaphors that shape reality. The 'life' reflected in the researcher's poetry uses the theory of Kovecses (2007). Correspondence elaboration or concept mapping is used to conceptualize the relationship between the source domain and the target domain to construct the reality of 'life.' This study tries to conduct a cognitive semantic study of the concept of life in Helena Natasha's poetry from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The analysis result shows that the type of metaphor used by Helena Natasha in the poem with the theme The Call is dominated by ontology metaphors with fifteen data. Furthermore, the author managed to find two concepts contained in the poem with the theme ‘The Call’ that succeeded in shaping the reality of 'life,' namely, AMBITION IS FIRE/LIGHT, and LIFE IS A JOURNEY.The researcher suggests that future research expand the concept formed in a poem other than the concept of 'life' by Chairil Anwar.

Inner conflict is a conflict experienced by all human beings. This research aims at how humans can resolve the inner conflicts that they experiences. The researcher analyzed the interactions and reactions of Frodo Baggins as he faced some inner conflict. The researcher used Kurt Lewin's theory and Johnson’s theory in analyzing the inner conflicts that Frodo experienced. The researcher used the psychological approach. Then, the researcher formulates two questions that arise to discuss them. (1) What forms of inner conflict did Frodo experience in J.R.R Tolkien’s novel entitled The Lord of The Ring: The Fellowship of The Ring? (2) How did Frodo resolve the inner conflict in J.R.R Tolkien’s novel entitled The Lord of The Ring: The Fellowship of The Ring? The results found in analyzing inner conflict used Kurt Lewin's theory, there are three types of inner conflict experienced by Frodo Baggins in the novel The Lord of The Ring: The Fellowship of the Ring. The researcher found three form of inner conflict, there are: (1) Approach-Approach Inner Conflict has 3 data 2) Avoidance-Avoidance Inner Conflict has 10 data 3) Approach-Avoidance Inner Conflict has 8 data. It can be concluded that the Avoidance-Avoidance Inner Conflict is the most frequently happened to Frodo Baggins. The second research question used the Johnson’s theory that Frodo Baggins resolves his inner conflict in the novel The Lord of The Ring: The Fellowship of the Ring. The researcher found 5 styles to resolve inner conflict: (1) Turtle style has 1 data, (2) Shark style has 2 data, (3) Mouse deer style has 5 data, (4) Fox style has 2 data, and (5) Owl style has 2 data. It can be concluded that the Mouse deer style is the most frequently happened to Frodo Baggins.

This research examines psycholinguistic analysis of speech responses experienced by autistic people in Special Books by Special Kids YouTube Channel. The aims of this research are to identify the types of responses produced by autistic people, and to analyze how these types of responses are realized by autistic people in Special Books by Special Kids YouTube channel. It is important for us to understand that autistic people are able to respond and understand what other people say because there are still many people who think that people with autism are people whose words are always considered untrue and cannot be fully trusted. It is just that they are more focused on themselves so they have difficulty getting along with those around them. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with 17 videos as the data sources. The data of this research are responses uttered by autistic people. This study uses Rothwell's (2000) theory of autistic response in conversation and use Cook’s theory (1971) and Searle's theory (1979) to explain the types of utterances spoken by autistic people in the video. The results of the study indicate the responses that appears the most is the cognitively relevant response from 60 utterances out of 92 data. This proves that autistic people can respond relevantly to the conversation even though they have difficulty in communicating.

This proves that autistic people can respond relevantly to the conversation even though they have difficulty in communicating.","PeriodicalId":309663,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Literature, Linguistics, & Cultural Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123050583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Discuss about discrimination that should not only focus on blacks, in fact colored people also experience discrimination. This study aims to examine the issue of discrimination as reflected in the novel They Come in All Colors. Discrimination against colored people arises because white people as the dominant group perceive their racial group as much better than colored people in many aspects of social life. Thus, this study is a literary criticism that focuses on the discrimination against colored people described in the novel. This research is a study of literary criticism because the researcher interprets and analyzes literary works. This study uses a sociological approach to analyze Newman's five forms of discrimination. As well as describing the types of discrimination responses from Joe R. Feagin and Melvin P. This research focuses on literary texts with the theme of discrimination committed by white people. The data are taken from words, phrases, and sentences in the novel They Come in All Colors by Malcolm Hansen. Researcher collect data by identifying and classifying relevant quotes in They Come in All Colors. Then, the researcher analyzed the data by explaining the data related to the theory. This study reveals that there are four forms of discrimination described in They Come in All Colors by Malcolm Hansen, namely verbal expression, avoidance, exclusion, and physical abuse. On the other hand, there are types of responses to discrimination that are used to combat discrimination. First, withdrawal, they avoid and leave the place where discrimination occurs. Resign Acceptance they choose to carry out normal activities in addition to conflict. They do verbal confrontation to express their disagreement about discrimination. Also against discrimination with physical confrontation, such as throwing something at white people.
本研究发现,Malcolm Hansen在《They Come in All Colors》中描述的歧视有四种形式,分别是语言表达、回避、排斥和身体虐待。

The hero's journey takes a hero to leave their daily life, go on an adventure filled with obstacles, and return home by getting the boon (Campbell, 2004). J.K. Rowling's The Christmas Pig indicates that the main character experiences a hero's journey who adventures to the Land of the Lost to find his lost toy. This study aims to discuss Jack's hero's journey stages and how he encounters obstacles in The Christmas Pig. This study is categorized into literary criticism using a psychological approach by applying Campbell's hero's journey theory and supported by Allison & Goethals' theory of obstacles in the hero's journey. The data were taken from words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs in the novel The Christmas Pig by J.K. Rowling, published by Hachette Children's in London in 2021. The data were analyzed by identification, interpretation, and drawing a conclusion. There are two results from this study. First, Jack has passed all seventeen stages of the hero's adventure stages involving the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, belly of the whale, the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as the temptress, atonement with the father, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, refusal of the return, the magic flight, rescue from without, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds, and freedom to live. Second, Jack encounters the obstacles by getting help from the allies, using his intelligence, being tough and patient, strong determined, and optimistic. In summary, Jack's hero's journey is completed, but it is not easy and full of obstacles. The researcher suggests further researcher analyze The Christmas Pig by applying post-modernism, structuralism, or symbolism and analyzing different literary works using Campbell's hero's journey theory.
