La presencia en la provincia de Santander, actual Cantabria, de numerosos molinos y ferrerias a fines del siglo XIX, cuando despertaba la produccion de la energia hidroelectrica, favorecio que se instalasen las primeras fabricas de luz muy pronto en esta region. Este factor ayuda a analizar el proceso de innovacion tecnologica en comunidades que contaban con un cierto desarrollo preindustrial como en el caso de la cuenca del Saja-Besaya. En este articulo se estudia el origen y los efectos territoriales de las centrales de El Pavon y La Flor, tal vez las primeras de Cantabria. Su estudio ayuda a comprender como ha sido la integracion de la innovacion tecnologica en la sociedad preindustrial dando lugar a un nuevo modelo energetico, basado en la electricidad y la evolucion del motor de combustion interna, que dieron lugar a la Segunda Revolucion Industrial. Conocer cuales fueron los factores y agentes que intervinieron en este proceso no solo nos revelara sus caracteristicas sino que nos servira para saber como en la actualidad las nuevas tecnologias aplicadas a la produccion energetica intervienen en la creacion de un nuevo modelo energetico basado en la sostenibilidad. De igual manera que las primeras fabricas de luz cambiaron las funciones del territorio donde se instalaron. The existence of a large number water mills and iron foundries in the province of Santander, nowadays Cantabria, during the late of the 19th century, it made easy that they were installing the incipient ‘light plants’ very soon in this region, when it was waking the production of the hydroelectric power up. This factor helps to analyse the process of technological innovation in the communities which had a certain proto-industrial development as in case of the basin of the Saja-Besaya. This paper will explore the origin and the territorial effects of the power plants of El Pavon and La Flor, perhaps the Cantabrian first ones in the early twentieth century.

The island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, is a landmark not only for the Puerto Ricans who inhabit it, but for the population nationally and internationally known for their long struggles against the United States Navy out of the enclave, occupied for sixty years. Ten years after the withdrawal of the military body, Vieques faces great social, economic and educational challenges. This article describes specific events of the historical and cultural development of the island, framed within a set of social symbols that are based on natural and cultural framework. Finally, this article describes and presents self-management business through sustainable tourism as an educational strategy for the implementation of the value of the natural and cultural landscape as a fundamental condition for the success of the pilot project ‘My resources and I are Puerto Rico’ from University of Puerto Rico.

Avalanches are a type of natural risk that threatens certain mountain areas. Although this risk has never been very high in Spanish mountains, the number of avalanches’ victims in the last decades has increased substantially due to the increasing human occupation of these areas. This is why there is a growing interest in studying avalanches’ dynamics both from spacial as well as temporal points of view. This study analyses avalanches detected in Penalara’s massif, in the Spanish Central Mountain Range, and applies a Geographical System Information (GIS) based methodology to determine the areas that are most exposed to this type of natural risk.

The Spanish state land which regulates the Spanish Constitution of 1978, in 1982 allowed the province of Murcia from becoming a province autonomous region. Through this work we intend to show the particular characteristics of land registry’s databases in a digital format (both on a spatial and thematic basis) and how to prepare this coded & structured information, in the most convenient way, so as to permit its handling by a System of Geographical Information intended to allow an appropriate land management. In order to show the potential offered by this particular source of geographic information, we have used data referring to the town of Getafe, which is in the south of Madrid’s urban agglomeration, with the purpose of defining a methodology which allows us to identify the main types of basic units in the city.
