As a social being, people will socialize through communication using language as a medium. The decision to choose a language or use one of the language codes depends on the perceived cost or benefit he will get. This paper is intended to describe communication patterns and preferences for language use especially within a culture where another language is dominant. It is a sociolinguistic study using descriptive qualitative methods on the Muslim diaspora community in the village of Angantiga, Badung Regency who had lived in Bali province in Indonesia for more than a generation. The data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and direct observation. The results show that there is a relationship between language use in various domains and self-identity. As a diaspora community they are very accommodating and show language tolerance to maintain communication and interpersonal relationships. The language convergence is carried out in order to seek approval or social recognition from the surrounding community. It can foster tolerance to build social harmony in the midst of diversity.

English at higher education level requires the development of language competence, especially in the development of speaking competence which will be important when it must be applied to communication needs in the industry. To achieve the goal of joining these needs, the use of technology in learning and its evaluation can be one of the determinants of increasing competence. The form of implementation is the assignment of English video presentation which is considered effective in developing competence in the digital and global era as it is today. The stage of creating videos in learning activities can increase student engagement in the lecturing process, increase the effectiveness of the English learning process, stimulate students' creativity and independence, and most importantly foster students' courage to appear and communicate in English. Assessment of the linguistic aspect will help students identify grammatical errors that need to be corrected and improve their verbal skills in English itself. The object of this research is the seventh semester students majoring in Informatics Engineering, STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The technique of collecting data applied in this research is observation. The data is qualitative data and in the form of English video presentations uploaded by students in the Google Classroom application in the online English class which will be analyzed by using descriptive qualitative methods. The analysis of the linguistic aspect includes pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, content, and comprehension. The data obtained will be classified so that students' English competence, especially speaking, can be identified and can be used as the basis for implementing appropriate teaching methods.

It is very interesting to analyze figurative language in a song lyric, because figurative language makes the language more unique by using metaphor, hyperbole, etc. The aim of this research is to classify and analyze the lyric of Adele’s Song Easy On Me based on figurative language used. This research implies qualitative research. The data source in this research was song lyric of Adele’s Song entitled Easy On Me. Technique of collecting data in this research was observation. The theory used was from Miller and Greenberg (1981) about figurative language. Each data was analyzed based on the theory of figurative language descriptively. Based on the result of this research, in Comparative Figurative Language, just found data in personification (4 data). In Contradictive Figurative Language, it was found hyperbole (3 data), litotes (2 data), and paradox (1 datum). In Correlative Figurative Language, it was found in this data source, namely: allusion (1 datum), ellipsis (2 data), metonymy (2 data), and symbol (8 data). The most data found in data source was symbol. This song lyric had many figurative languages. It means this song lyric tried to use figurative language to express the feeling or idea imaginatively. In other word, this song lyric tried to create a special image and bring out one's emotions.

The number of followers of the account can be recovered, even it can be hundreds or thousands, the account can also be used as a model to become popular. The term for those who earn money from social networks, especially YouTube, is called as YouTuber. It becomes something interesting to study when some YouTubers uploaded their activities, one of them was the video when they went on tours or travel trips to guide the foreign tourists using English during the tours they uploaded. How the structure of the conversation they used was one of the interesting things to study. This is descriptive qualitative research which aims to describe conversational structure of tour guide in YouTube channel. The data were collected through listening, transcription, and note-taking techniques. The collected data then were analyzed using the chosen theory. The results showed that conversational structures used by tour guides in their YouTube channel include six elements which refer to opening, turn-taking, topic shift, overlapping, adjacency pair, and closing. Besides that, there are four expressions such as greeting, asking for information, giving information, and confirming. Expression of greeting consists of formal greeting. Asking for information about condition, readiness, and opinion. Giving information regarding the desire to go somewhere. Meanwhile, confirming expressions are used to ensure specific information about the guest.

This study concerns with code-switching in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. This study aims to answer the research problems, which are: (1) to classify the types of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance and (2) and to analyze the function of code switching. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to identify the data. Code-switching was described according to a theory proposed by Poplack (1980) to classify the types of code-switching and the theory by Apple& Muysken (1987) to describe the function of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. The result of this study shows that all types of code switching and six function of code-switching were found. First, the three types of code-switching were found, namely tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching, in which the most dominant switching is intra-sentential switching. It occurs because Daniel Mananta looks more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages. Second, six functions of code-switching were found, namely referential function, directive function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function, poetic function. The most dominant function is phatic function because Daniel Mananta’s feels free and more comfortable expressing his emotional feelings in a language that is used in his daily language.

The competitive nature of today’s science leads to the upsurge of publication in scientific journals. Publishing in an international journal with a reputable index such as Scopus, in particular, has gained a significant emphasis. Despite this fact, studies on the rhetorical organization of the abstract section of a research article (RA) through the perspective of Scopus journal quartiles remain scant. Driven by the gap in literature, this study aims to examine whether journal’s quartile affects the rhetorical organization and linguistic realizations of the abstracts. A corpus of 40 RA abstracts was obtained from one Scopus-indexed applied linguistics journal, which over the years, had improvements in terms of its quartiles. The abstracts were divided into three groups: each representing different quartiles of the journal (i.e., Q2, Q3, Q4). Employing a comparative approach using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, Hyland’s (2000) model of rhetorical organization was employed as the main framework to code the rhetorical moves, whereas a statistical analysis (i.e., Z-test) was performed on the moves and steps’ occurrences. The findings showed that there is a significant difference in the steps’ occurrence and tense realization between the groups, indicating that to some extent, the journal’s quartile indeed played a role. The study offers recommendations for further research.

The aims of this research is to find out grammar mistakes and obstacles in learning English through writing. Through writing, students can improve their understanding by paying close attention to the grammar and content. The implementation of CRS is meant to enhance the understanding of students of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. And the implementation of Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) is done through documentation of students’ work through translation. The data source is taken from a report text in Indonesian as source language and translated it into English as target language. In order to know the benefit of SST, students are given the questionnaire to gain the data. Data collection is the results of students’ translations sheets. The results of 68 students’ translation work show that there are 98 error found in 4 kinds (errors omission, addition, mis-ordering and mis-formation) and each kind of error has its own sub-kind errors (SKE). The biggest error is omission with 39 errors (39,8%) and lowest error is mis-ordering with 12 errors (12,2%). Omission has 2 SKE, those are grammatical morpheme with 23 errors (23,5%) and content morpheme with 16 error (16,3%). Addition has 29 errors (29,6%) with SKE 16 simple errors addition (16,3%), and 13 double error addition (13,3%). Mis-ordering has 12 errors (12,2%) with SKE 4 misplacement of verbs (4,0%) and 8 misplacements of words/items (8,1%). Mis-formation has 18 errors with SKE 5 error of alternating form/ prepositions (5,1%), 6 errors of content oriented lexical/quantifiers (6,1%) and tenses with 7 errors (7,1%). There were 9 errors found in the agreement between demonstrative pronoun and noun (9,1%) and the lowest number of errors are apostrophe s and misplacement of verb with 4 errors each (4,0%). Pesantren is an environment that is very well known as religiousness in which there are several rules that must be obeyed by teachers and students. The purpose of this discipline is to build humanist relationships. This study aims to uncover and describe the meanings and types of conversational implicatures contained in the conversations of teachers and students at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Al-Azhar Islamic boarding school. This study uses data analysis. Qualitative methods are methods that aim to obtain descriptive data. The data in this study are conversational implicatures that transcribed into written text. Data were collected using selection, description and verification techniques. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptivewhich is based on Siswantoro's theory. The results of this study indicate that there are four types of conversation implicatures, namely general conversation implicatures, scaled implicatures, special conversation implicatures and conventional implicatures.

This research is entitled “Subtitling Translation Strategy and Semiotic Approach on Titanic Film”. This research aims to identify and analyze the subtitling translation strategies in the Titanic film. This research also analyzes the meaning in Titanic film delivered through non-verbal signs. This research contributes to fill some gaps in the field of film subtitling from English into Indonesian and utilizes the multimodal transcription to deliver the meaning of Titanic film. This research refers to the theory of subtitling strategy by Gottlieb (1992) and the theory of Multimodal Transcription by (Forceville, 2007). The methodology applied in this research is descriptive qualitative due to the analysis in the form of elaboration. This research shows the subtitling translation strategy found in the Titanic film are eight strategies which cover expansion strategy, paraphrase, transfer, imitation, transcription, condensation, decimation, and deletion strategy. The meaning delivered through nonverbal signs in the Titanic film is sadness, the happiness of love, and an unforgettable dreadful tragedy. This meaning is delivered along with the visual images and the soundtrack.

Language is one of the important things in human life. By using the language, we can communicate with others. This research tried to analyze the bible translation by using methods of translation theory by Newmark (1988). This research was a qualitative research that focused to analyze the Gospel according to Mark. Bible entitled New Testament (2005) was published by The Indonesian Bible Society for The Gideons International. It was printed by Percetakan Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia. The book consists of 727 pages. Informal method was used to present the results of the analysis. It was the explanation of the translation methods used. Formal method was used to describe the table of the frequency of the translation methods applied in the bible translation found in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel. The translation methods found in data source were word for word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Adaptation was not found in all chapters of data source. The most translation method applied in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel was free translation. Free translation had the highest percentage in every chapter in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel. In the other word, the translator tried to transfer the meaning from source text into target text with changing the form based on cultures in target language.
