In the contemporary world, the dynamics of culture and communication are constantly evolving due to the forces of modernization. Traditional rituals and practices often undergo transformations as societies adapt to new realities. The research aims to analyze symbolic communication in the ritual of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni in the village of East Kasiyan, using a semiotic approach. In the context of modernization, the ritual faces challenges in preserving its meaning and relevance amid social and cultural changes. Therefore, this study seeks to understand the symbolic values embedded in the ritual and the role of symbolic communication in strengthening cultural identity and social cohesion in the community. The research adopts a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis method. This research employs a qualitative research design, aiming to deeply explore the semiotic aspects of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni ritual and its significance in the context of modernization. Data is collected through participatory observation during the implementation of Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni, as well as in-depth interviews with 20 participants, they were 5 community figures, 5 local leaders, and 10 cultural practitioners related to the communication. Besides, relevant documents and literature are used to support the analysis. The research findings reveal that Slametan Ngawandasa Ndinteni is a ritual rich in signs and symbols, including language, bodily movements, and ritual objects. The study’s focal point was the June 1, 2018 edition of the esteemed Indonesian newspaper, Java Pos, renowned for its vibrant sports reporting, particularly in football. Data consisted of expressions and metaphors in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, sourced from Java Pos' sports reporting (June 1, 2018 edition), especially relating to football. The methodology involved participatory observation reading 7 football-specific sports pieces and scrutinizing each for expressions and metaphors. Al-Maliki 2 Sukodono Islamic Boarding School employs a distinctive approach by implementing a bilingual education system using both English and Arabic languages. However, in this regard, there are several obstacles, namely lack of students’ enthusiasm, inconsistency, lack of interest and family support, as well as limited facilities. Therefore, to address these issues, a concept is introduced that every student who wishes to become a member of that community is required to use the same language, either English or Indonesian. Furthermore, the reserach aims to demonstrate various types of motivation that can be employed by educators, institutions, and parents. Al-Maliki 2 Sukodono Islamic Boarding School implements bilingual education, incorporating both English and Arabic for communication. However, throughout this process, several barriers hinder the students, such as a lack of interest in foreign languages and inadequate support from families with no foreign language background. This research explores the process of acquiring English as a second language for students and emphasizes the significance of the environment in second language learning. Data can be collected through speaking or writing tasks, where participants are asked to generate specific language. This aids in understanding the language production process, planning, and decision-making involved in selecting words and sentence structures. The findings of this research are expected to assist schools and non-formal institutions as organizers in identifying motivational approaches that can be applied to students in English language learning. Ultimately, this can lead to improved quantity and quality of students’ English language proficiency, fulfilling Indonesia’s workforce demands.

Language acquisition in early childhood is a crucial foundation in individual development as it is a critical period in which children rapidly and naturally learn language and communication. Speaking is a crucial language skill in everyday life. The act of speaking is closely related to language usage, and one example of this is the development of language abilities in 2-year-old children. This study aims to explore the semantic language acquisition in 2-year-old children at Kampung Baru. It is a qualitative descriptive study that focuses on the semantic language of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. This research is presented as an alternative strategy to enhance the intellectual development of children, especially at Kampung Baru, in their understanding of more complex language and communication in the future. The data source is the language used and the gestures by 2-year-old children at Kampung Baru. The data collection method employed in this study is participant observation with a semi-structured interview and complemented by recording, note-taking, and interviews. The researcher observed and recorded conversations of 2-year-old children and noted words related to the research objectives. Additionally, interviews were conducted with families of 2-year-old children at Kampung Baru during two months, specifically regarding nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The research findings indicate that 2-year-old children at Kampung Baru are capable of expressing and acquiring words accurately and in line with their intentions. They can differentiate between spoken words and actions. Furthermore, they demonstrate nonverbal language skills by expressing objects through gestures when referring to nouns, indicating actions when referring to verbs, and displaying attitudes and facial expressions when referring to adjectives.

Code-switching is the alteration or shift in the usage of one language to another within the context of communication, often occurring spontaneously and naturally. This study aims to find code switching forms, its underlying factors, as well as its function found in the Kehormatan di Balik Kerudung. The data of this research are players’ utterances in which code switching appear. The data collected were analyzed using Poplack’s theory (1980) to determine the form of code switching, Grosjean’s theory (2010) to find the functions of code switching, and Azhar’s, et al (2011) to find the factors behind the code switching. The results of this study indicate that extrasentential code-switching in the form of Javanese particles highly dominates the code-switching practices compared to the other two, namely intrasentential and intersentential, namely there were 30 extrasentential code-switching, 22 intrasentential and 7 intersentential. Some of the code-switching functions, are among others: to start a conversation, to confirm the conversation, to end the conversation, to confirm or emphasize statements, to ask for approval, and to answer doubts. Six factors underlying the code switching were among others: speakers, speech partners, topics of conversation, place and time of speech events, functions and objectives, as well as variety and level of speech.

The speech level of èngghi-bhunten holds significant importance within the broader context of the ML and culture. It refers to a distinct level of speech that reflects cultural values, social norms, and a rich historical layer. This study examines the form, function, factors, and the context of using the ML èngghi-bhunten at the Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School Situbondo. This research is a type of qualitative research. The method of data collection is in the form of an observation method. The observations carried out included the listening-engagement technique, the free listening-engagement technique, supported by recording and note-taking techniques and supplemented by the interview method. The observation method was employed to observe the use of èngghi-bhunten speech level at Al-Azhar Islamic Boarding School. The researcher recorded social interactions, usage contexts, and the underlying factors behind the use of èngghi-bhunten. Besides, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Madurese students (santri) who possessed knowledge about the usage of èngghi-bhunten. Through these interviews, the researcher gained a deeper understanding of the perceptions, meanings, and contexts surrounding the use of èngghi-bhunten. The collected data were then written in the form of orthographic writing. The analytical method used in this research is contextual analysis, namely the analysis method applied to the data by basing, calculating, and linking the context which is a means of clarifying an intention in the form of a situation related to an event. The results showed that (1) the èngghi-bhunten only used in the dhelem family (Kiai and Nyai); (2) santri always use ML èngghi-bhunten to Kiai and Nyai as a reflection of the Salaf pesantren and as a form of polite manners.

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation of thousands of islands with vast and diverse cultures. Every inhabited island must have at least a culture comprising cultural products such as rites, tales, ceremonies, etc. However, some individual islands might also have more than one culture. The culture carries sets of beliefs that are worth examining to understand and cultivate the people’s worldviews and perspectives. Those perspectives can be traced from folktales as cultural products. As the agent in the Anthropocene period, human beings are also observable in the generationally told folktales. This article explores the depictions and the roles of human characters and supernatural beings in two folktales from Sulawesi, one of the biggest islands in Indonesia. It problematizes the independency and power of human beings in the folktales. The research objects of this article are The Giant and the Orphan (Kalamboro Kaa Elu-elu) and People Who Descended (Miantii). By employing appraisal theory (Martin and White, 2005), this article identifies the attitudes towards both human and supernatural characters by the linguistic choices attached to them in the folktales. The choices of words and expressions depicting the characters are classified into affect, judgement, and appreciation. In conjunction with the folktales’ plot, the linguistic analysis reveals that human characters in those two folktales are depicted as dependent on and powerless before supernatural characters. This article does not intend to draw any generalization toward any cultures from Sulawesi and Indonesia since it examines very limited objects.

Every inhabited island must have at least a culture comprising cultural products such as rites, tales, ceremonies, etc. However, some individual islands might also have more than one culture. The culture carries sets of beliefs that are worth examining to understand and cultivate the people’s worldviews and perspectives. Those perspectives can be traced from folktales as cultural products. As the agent in the Anthropocene period, human beings are also observable in the generationally told folktales. This article explores the depictions and the roles of human characters and supernatural beings in two folktales from Sulawesi, one of the biggest islands in Indonesia. It problematizes the independency and power of human beings in the folktales. The research objects of this article are The Giant and the Orphan (Kalamboro Kaa Elu-elu) and People Who Descended (Miantii). By employing appraisal theory (Martin and White, 2005), this article identifies the attitudes towards both human and supernatural characters by the linguistic choices attached to them in the folktales. The choices of words and expressions depicting the characters are classified into affect, judgement, and appreciation. In conjunction with the folktales’ plot, the linguistic analysis reveals that human characters in those two folktales are depicted as dependent on and powerless before supernatural characters. This study is motivated by a lack of interest in reading narratives in Indonesian language lessons for especially elementary school students at MI Masyhudiyah Giri. This study aims to determine the interest in reading in grade V MadraI Masyhudiyah Giri, to find out what factors cause the lack of interest in reading grade V students, to find out the role of the teacher in raising interest in reading of grade V students MI Masyhudiyah, and The Role of Schools in Encouraging Interest in Reading stories in grade V MI Masyhudiyah Giri Kebomas Gresik. The form of this research is descriptive research that uses observation, interviews, and questionnaires. This interview technique involved 10 students from class V representatives at MI Masyhudiyah. This interview was conducted in a structured manner. As a result, we found an internal factor that caused this problem lack of interest in reading narratives in grade V students of MI Masyhudiyah Giri were gender, internal desire, interest in visual media and electronic media. The findings of the classification of the text method of reading indicate an interest in reading narratives in Indonesian language lessons. The importance of improving narrative reading for students is to increase knowledge and broad insight.

The Bible is one of the religious discourses that contains forms of speech acts. One type of speech act which dominates in the Bible is assertive speech act. It is supported by the statements contained in the Bible are dogmatic and filled with a proportion of validity that is believed to be true. One of the scriptures in the Bible is The Book of Genesis. Genesis is the first chapter of the Bible and begins with the story of the creation of the heavens, the earth, and everything in it. Genesis is very important in the history of biblical periodization. Genesis contains a variety of types and forms of assertive speech acts. This research is a qualitative-descriptive study. The data were collected using the read and write technique, then classified and analyzed using the pragmatic equivalent method. Then, the data are presented with descriptive procedure. This research reviewed 20 data of assertive speech acts in the Genesis with details: assertive speech acts-acknowledging amounted to 2 data, assertive speech acts-demanding amounted to 5 data, assertive speech acts-declaring amounted to 6 data, assertive speech acts-giving testimony amounted to 3 data, assertive speech acts announcing amounted to 2 data, and assertive speech acts-reporting amounted to 2 data. Based on the form, assertive speech acts in the book of Genesis are detailed into 15 forms of direct speech acts and 5 forms of indirect speech acts.

This research aims to determine the functions and methods of preserving old manuscripts in the Sasak community in the west Sakra district. This research is motivated by the existence of manuscripts that have a function in the culture of the Sasak community in the West Sakra sub-district and proves whether the use of certain manuscripts is limited to community suggestions or whether there are other purposes. Data collection was carried out by observation and interviews with an emic approach and analyzed using functional theory. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the Jatiswara script serves as a ‘circumcision’ diving ritual for boys because diving is an Islamic process as described in the Jatiswara text, namely the mulene game slam ‘a person’s Islam is not perfect if it has not been circumcised. The Indarjaya script serves as a remedy for people who are ‘unable to speak’. It is depicted in the story of the daughter who could not speak, namely the princess nengke kayun ngandike ‘the princess wants to talk’. While the Selandir script serves as a ritual remedy for kepaq people ‘cannot walk’. It was described in Selandir’s text that reads still lemper bise lumaris ‘still unable to walk. Meanwhile, the manuscript preservation process is carried out in two ways, namely internal and external. Internally, preservation is carried out by direct inheritance and copying of manuscripts. Meanwhile, external preservation is carried out by establishing customary institutions, puppetry, digitization, translation, and transformation of manuscripts.
