In spite of the current downturn in the telecommunications sector, DSL has become arguably the most promising broadband delivery mechanism in the world. It is fueling an explosion of consumer electronics applications worldwide that demand a high rate of data transfer. By far the most popular form of consumer DSL is ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber lines). ADSL can be realized with highly integrated silicon implementations. In this paper, we describe a single-chip ADSL customer premises modem/router that is capable of delivering 18+ Mbit/s of data to the home network.

The US Federal Communications Commission has recently initiated a process to overhaul spectrum policy in an effort to modernize how spectrum is managed in the US. These changes are likely to alter significantly spectrum usage for wireless product categories and may directly affect design parameters for some receivers. The paper discusses the findings of the FCC's Spectrum Policy Task Force, which proposes a number of changes in spectrum policy and for which the FCC has solicited public comments. The paper goes on to examine the implications for "unlicensed" devices and broadcast receivers.

Lately, there has been a vast increase in interactive broadcasting contents research using the MPEG-4 standard and in multimedia content description research using the MPEG-7 standard. Also, there are few researches into a compromise between the MPEG-4 standard and the MPEG-7 standard for newer applications, such as an interactive broadcasting contents server, which is able to query and search. The paper presents the first results of research on the MPEG-7 interface over MPEG-4 systems, which makes it easy to search MPEG-4 content. We have developed an MPEG-7 interface embedded in MPEG-4 systems and an MPEG-4 player that provides a query function and a search function.

This paper presents a low power motion detection algorithm and system architecture. The proposed architecture uses just one bit data of each selected pixel for motion detection, where less than a few percentages of the total pixels will be used. Since only a small amount of image data is used for the motion detection, extremely low power consumption is possible. This architecture is useful for portable battery-operated security cameras.

The system described in this paper uses multicarrier modulation, and has been successfully tested at a data rate up to 10 kbps over 1 km. The system algorithm generates 48 frequencies for transmitting 48 parallel bits of data in each packet. A long transmitted signal sequence is combined with synchronisation, zero gap and information packets. The long multi-frequency signal packets have been implemented to minimise the effect of multipath fading, which is a particular problem in shallow, open water environments. To acquire the starting point of the transmitting sequence, a linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal is used for synchronisation. In order to reduce noise, adaptive threshold packets are used to set up a suitable signal. Experimental results from sea-trials have shown that the system can cope with multipath fading environments.

A novel distributed speech recognition (DSR) development platform, configurable DSR (C-DSR), is proposed for various kinds of wireless devices to remotely configure and employ sophisticated recognizers on the server over wireless networks. Many portable speech recognition applications, such as voice-controlled toys, TV remotes, vehicle navigator and mobile inquiry systems were efficiently deployed using C-DSR platform over WLAN/GPRS by simply configuring their configuration files from client side.

This paper presents a system that provides a data storage area on optical discs which is protected against unauthorized access. The protected area is referred to as a key locker. It is of particular importance to applications that use digital rights management (DRM). An advantage of the key locker concept is its DRM-agnostic nature. As such, any DRM system can benefit from the protected area.

One of the main goals in developing the next generation wireless communication system is increasing the data rates. A promising way to achieve this is the combination of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). A test system has been built in which the OFDM based wireless LAN standard, IEEE 802.11a, is extended with MIMO. Initial measurements are performed in a typical office building and successful transmissions up to 162 Mb/s are demonstrated.

The multimedia systems introduced by leading car manufacturers mark a new level of functional integration, networking and graphical user interface. In this paper some requirements of a novel software architecture for these systems are presented. Then we discuss the object-oriented framework, which forms the common software basis for several of these embedded automotive multimedia systems, and how the requirements are implemented.
