Optical discs are popular for exchanging and distributing content. A small Portable Blue (SFFO) disc with a diameter of 30 mm stores at least 1 GByte in a single layer using Blu-ray Disc technology. This paper describes strategies to achieve low power consumption in a Portable Blue system. Estimates show a value around 1/20 of the peak (/spl sim/1 W) power while streaming 1 Mb/s data.

We propose a new carrier phase synchronization algorithm which can recover residual frequency offset as well as phase offset by using proposed QD (quadrant decision) method. The salient feature of this method is that residual carrier frequency offset can be compensated by using an FFT demodulated signal without the aid of GI (guard interval) or pilots.

This paper proposes a high performance false contour reduction system with pattern analysis algorithm for PDP-HDTV. It also presents the optimized design and implementation of the method. The proposed method is verified using the Xilinx. Virtex-II FPGA XC2V2000-BG575. Furthermore, we suggest an advanced error-prediction algorithm for high performance. This method is demonstrated experimentally for a 50" PDP-HDTV.

Increased software demands from consumers lead CE (consumer electronics) companies towards a shift from hardware-oriented to a more software-oriented industry. Many CE companies spend a tremendous amount of money on software development and post release defect fixing. We propose a modification of the traditional six sigma approach to fully analyze and measure software development cost.

We propose a person annotation overlay system using a wearable computer for augmented reality environment which allows the user to recognize an unknown person. The system uses a combination of color and edge information to detect the face. Then, the system is applied to recognize multiple persons based on the face dictionary. Experimental results show that the proposed system is applicable to a visitor guider.

GeSbTe-based thin films showed superior properties for a recording layer of Blu-ray Disc, especially for a front-side recording layer of L1. The film can be thinned to 6 nm with maintaining a rapid phase-transition rate and a large transmittance of >50% was realized in the L1. It is remarkable that transmittances are balanced between in the amorphous and crystalline areas of L1, and it works to remove the optical interference when recording-playing on the rear-side recording layer of L0 through the L1.
