We present a scalable solution that enables a single mainstream hard disk drive (HDD) to simultaneously record and play back multiple real-time (RT) video streams, in addition to supporting non-RT PC-like applications. The solution is scalable to different types of disks, different numbers of streams with different bit rates, and various non-RT applications.

This paper proposes a new concept of a shared and combined screen for new small devices called GDA (group digital assistant). In the GDA, the screens of two PDAs can be shared at a sharing view mode, and can be treated just like one screen at a combination mode. The GDA can change the number of combined screens and direction of those screens flexibly, since the proposal method realizes using radio communications. We have developed application software and experimented in cooperative work for evaluation. We found that functions of the GDA were effective in actual cooperative work. The concept of the GDA can make flexible usage of a cellular phone and a PDA in the next generation.

This paper presents a CORBA based core middleware architecture for supporting seamless interoperability, between standard home network middlewares. To support CORBA on an IEEE 1394-based home network, we design and implement a CORBA programming platform without loss of real-time properties of the IEEE 1394 protocol. To customize the real-time CORBA properties on the IEEE 1394 protocol, firstly, we develop a specially designed device driver of IEEE 1394 adaptor under the RT-Linux kernel. On the top of the device driver, we design and implement an IEEE 1394 ORB for supporting CORBA. The proposed ORB consists of two components. One is the IEEE 1394 asynchronous ORB according to the GIOP specification of CORBA to support the interoperability, with other ORB such as IIOP, the other is the IEEE 1394 isochronous ORB to keep the real-time properties of the IEEE 1394 protocols. The implemented CORBA platform is verified by testing its performance with a practical home network model.

This paper presents a novel DC restoration error correction method based on the statistical hypothesis testing. The proposed method can remove the line-wise error in analog images introduced during the DC restoration processes.

This paper presents a monolithic 16-bit analog front end (AFE) chip for CCD/CIS scanner and MFP(Multi-function Peripheral) systems incorporating a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a 3-channel high resolution correlated double sampler (CDS), a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and an on-chip voltage reference. The AFE, fabricated in a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS process, occupies an active area of 8 mm/sup 2/ and consumes 300 mW at a 3 V supply. For the full signal path (CDS-PGA-ADC), no missing code is guaranteed at a 16-bit resolution and typical differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) are +1.31-0.92 LSB and +6.7/-16.6 LSB, respectively.

Channel estimation schemes for OFDM systems in impulsive environments are investigated. Their performances are studied in the cases of static and mobile hilly terrain single frequency network channels. Additionally, results on a simple practical impulse burst position detection method are also presented.

We present a flexible audio coding system for use in the unbroken transmission of high-quality (192 kHz sampling rate, 24-bit digitization (max.)) stereo-audio data streams, either live or recorded. The system provides both lossless and variable-level lossy quality; quality is selectable to suit a full range of wide- and narrow-band IP networks. As input signals for transmission at the server PC, less than nine PCM sound files in different formals are simultaneously encodable, and the efficiency of simultaneous compression is very high. The system is realized by software that runs on a typical PC. This makes everyone able to transmit high-quality sound anywhere within the IP networks. An MPEG-4 audio codec (TwinVQ or AAC) provides the core of the lossy-coding module.
