We examine the environmental objectives of businesses in Qatar and the association with stakeholder influence. Our statistical analyses, from survey data collected by meeting 101 business executives, show that stakeholders who are affected by the actions of a firm sooner, influence environmental objectives that yield benefits in the short-term. Among all stakeholders, the government is the most influential. Firm clusters, based on environmental objectives, differed significantly in terms of their size, industry and geographic region of operations. Future research can build on our findings to examine environmental objectives more specific to Qatar, to study businesses that operate in other oil-producing developing countries, and to evaluate how businesses address environmental regulations of the government, the most important stakeholder in our study.

Environmental challenges and their potential implications for corporate strategy are becoming increasingly important in the field of strategic management. Still, the strategic management literature deals with the concept of ‘environment’ in a rather abstract way. This paper aims at bridging the gap between (rather abstract) discussions of the concept of ‘environment’ in strategic management literature and the implications for corporate strategy provided by the challenges of the natural environment. We build on different theoretical perspectives, but most importantly on recent developments in systems theory. Thus, our paper contributes to the paradigm discussion in the strategic management field by making a fundamental differentiation between system and environment as a starting point. We reassess the well-known ‘Brent Spar’ case in order to illustrate our propositions.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and its infrastructure development potential has been the focus of management scholars for long. Indian power sector, marked by years of under-investment and ever increasing demands can also leapfrog by infusion of FDI. India has the potential to attract far more FDI in the power sector as compared to less than 4% of the nation’s total FDI that it attracts at present. The root of the problem is as much a question of inadequate reforms as it is of insufficient investment inflow. Therefore, we have undertaken this study that attempts to examine the determinants of FDI in order to enable Indian power sector to attract more FDI and to benefit from these capital inflows.

The paper evaluates how leadership style and feedback affect a leader’s effectiveness (measured through creativity and performance) in virtual teams. The findings indicate that virtual team members’ creativity is impacted by leadership style regardless of the type of feedback whereas overall performance is impacted by feedback style alone. The objective is to provide guidelines to the virtual team leaders for improving their effectiveness based on the specific goals of a particular project.

This paper reviews sustainable strategic management (SSM) activities and examines how one nation has changed and performed within the framework of SSM principles. The problem is that relationships between market structures and environmental sustainability are dynamic. This case study uses Poland to illustrate some of the problems in conducting national policy. Since moving to a free-market, Poland enjoyed significant economic advances, but now faces a number of challenges to manage rapid economic growth while ensuring environmental and social stability. This study reviews some of the factors and elements of concern to policy-makers, managers, and social scientists.

In management literature, many studies claim that there is a business case for companies to address climate change through adequate carbon management strategies. We argue that corporate carbon management is not limited to mitigation efforts internally but also comprises of supply chain optimisations, product-related improvements, and compensation activities. Taking a clear business standpoint, we ask whether such carbon management efforts in a life-cycle wide context are also relevant for corporate competitiveness. Drawing on the industrial organisation (IO) literature, we derive a framework of eight distinct carbon management strategies. For each strategy we elaborate on its potential contribution to generating a competitive advantage and illustrate this with empirical examples of companies already pursuing such strategies.

Green management has become a new mandate for firms in all industries to use in their operational strategies. The hotel industry has long utilised environmentally friendly practises yet it has incorporated more actions in recent years due to consumer demand. This work offers an exploratory qualitative study of consumer perceptions about the importance of green management practises in purchase decisions for hotel stays. The sample includes hotel customers. Results suggest that green management practises do matter to a majority of customers. Other findings and directions for future research are included.

A literature review on sustainability in supply chain management is presented. The review differs from past ones in that it surveys more the non-operations management articles such as those in the areas of industrial ecology, clusters/eco-industrial parks, economics of locality, systems learning and thinking. Inspired by the review, a conceptual flow cycle for sustainable networks is developed in terms of its four phases: development, production, distribution and assessment. Potential research opportunities are highlighted.

This research evaluated how China is creating its own competitive advantage within the global economy. The concept of competitive advantage as presented by Michael Porter is utilised as the model for the creation of competitive advantage and a bench mark for comparison in this research. A description of how China is creating a competitive advantage politically, culturally, legally, economically, and through its alignment with the USA, EU, and the global economy is described. In addition, the sustainability of this competitive advantage is considered.

The importance of corporation attention to sustainability has grown over recent decades. We examine the magnitude of connections between sustainability and company worth. This paper provides insights and summarises mechanisms explaining how company value may be affected by a management decision to adopt steps recognised as sustainable strategies. We assess measurable effects relative to immediate market reactions to significant corporate communications in the realm of sustainability (namely with respect to being a component of Dow Jones Sustainability Index, DJSI). Longer terms connections between corporate sustainability and corporate value are also discussed. We find no significant short-term effect from disclosure of DJSI participation. We divide the potential benefit of a sustainability focus into five areas: investor relations, customer relationships, proximity to regulator, improvement of internal processes and impact on employees. The data suggest that the advantages of sustainable strategies may be significant but if so, are realised over a period of years and investors do not immediately realise benefits from announcements confirming DJSI membership.
