This study aims at describing and analyzing the change of Camplong residents’ perspective towards the function of forest which brings an impact on the damage of Oenaek Forest. In addition, the purpose of this study is also to conduct an ecotheological observation about this viewpoint shift. There is a Natural Tourism Park in Camplong with various kinds of flora and fauna. In Timorese belief, this forest functions as a palace for Usi (the highest god) and a shelter for the spirits of passed away ancestors. The shift of the forest status fromnatural forest (restricted forest) to productive forest has caused the change of residents’ perspective towards the function of the forest. In the past they used to perceive the forest as a subject, but now it has been seen as an object of economic enterprise. The change of this standpoint has influenced the behavior of Camplong people who live around the forest area: the forest is no longer served as a place for celebrating traditional rituals, but merely as a tourist destination. The method applied in this research is qualitative descriptive whichis carried out through observation and in-depth interview.

Because of its cryptic nature apocalypse Daniel 7 has been interpreted in many ways. Often it is linked to the end of time teachings. This kind of interpretation is problematic. First, while emphasizing the dark side of the prophecy, it fails to capture its main intention which is optimism toward the future. Second, apocalypse contains dualistic ideas, but, they are not supposed to be separated, let alone taking one side over the other. Apocalyptic dualism should be treated as an oscillating, always negotiating positions, tensional but creativecollisions. This article shows a reading of apocalypse that reveals dualism as an integrated entity. It also considers theological consequences of such a reading. While being placed within the world’s history, God is deeply involved in worldly drama which consists of tragedy, as well as, comedy. On the political side, this reading demonstrates that imperial history does not run by itself, but, always prones to subversive movements.

The imagination reflected in this article is what if Paul as a nationalist Jew living in the Roman imperium milieu became part of the North Maluku people in the late twentieth century. What would he likely have done when recognizing that there were signs that the conflict involving Muslims and Christians tended to develop into a religious war? Based on the discourses among scholars in the New Perspectives on Paul, arguing that Paul’sletters were part of his rhethoric againts his opponents including Roman imperialism, this article shows that as an educated leader, he was trying hard to prevent a religious war form occuring. Such an imagining is helpful for reflecting on the context of post-conflict North Maluku, where, as Christopher Duncan assumes, there has never been a truly reconciliation.

Why animal ethics? The importance of animal ethics for the Indonesian public is to respond to the extinction threat of some animal species in Indonesia, like Tiger in Sumatera, Orang Utan in Kalimantan, Anoa in Sulawesi, and Cendrawasih in Papua. The way humans consume animals is often cruel, causing pain and suffering on the part of the animals. Such an attitude indicates the lack of moral standing in animal sphere. Philosophically and theologically, animal has sentience and intrinsic values which with humans have to recognise as the moral standard for animal.Using the theological-ethical concept that human being was created in the image of God, which means that they are not only endowed with senses but also the intellect to make them moral standing creature, this article points to the capacity as well as responsibility of humans to the environment, specifically to the animal world (animalities). As such, animals have to be regarded as having moral standing in the context of human beings’moral attitude and treat. Animals have to be respected and loved morally because they have sense, sentience and intrinsic value. Animals have feeling of pleasure and suffering which with human beings must honor and make as a moral standard. Like human beings, animals have the right to enjoy contentment and to be protected as the good creatures created by God. Although consuming animals can be considered part of natural order and natural recycle, animals have the right to enjoy liberation and prosperity during they are living, and to be avoided from suffering. In this sense, life and death must be accepted in balance. As a conclusion, in relating to animals, humans should demonstrate the virtues of respect, love, justice, and restrained attitudes. Animal ethics, thus, concerns with the sustainability of the peace and welfare of the whole creation on the planet earth.

The socio-political analysis of the acts of terrorism has produced phrases such as “terrorism/terrorist has no religion”. Such expressions overlook ethical-theological approaches in analyzing the acts of terrorism. This article aims to show that without an ethical-theological analysis, the socio-political interpretation of acts of terrorism is inadequate because of very strong theological elements that influence the person or group of people committing such acts of terror. Studying the case of the Surabaya Bombing in May 2018, this articledemonstrates that socio-political ideology is not strong enough to make a person or group of people to carry out acts of terrorism unless they are based on theologically informed belief.

Laughter is cloaking that has always assumed depth and shallowness. The construction of this article departs from the reading of Nietzsche’s aphoristic description in Guy Science concerning our question marks and the issue of intelligibility. The activity of laughing has personal dimension pointing to inner independence first; to a person who laugh. As long as words are part of the persona (phrosophon: ‘mask’) then the expression of laughter also points to the disguise. In reading Nietzsche, cloaking is not identical with hypocrisy. Humor can be a form of creative resistance even though it contains nihil aspect because it does not change any situation other than the possibility of being more tolerable. Nihilism was Nietzsche’s description of his day. The ability to laugh at oneself can be a healthy critique for those who claim to be godly. At least, in the Christian sphere laughter has religious dimension, containing the promise of salvation. In the Middle Ages, there was a tradition of humor and laughter as part of the Easter celebration (Risus Paschalis).

Today, the increase of global warming has made humans and nature difficult to live comfortably. Human activities damage the ecology and create global warming as the consequence. Humans exploit natural resources at the expense of the sustainability of nature. To respond to that ecological problem, this article draws forth the Sumba local wisdom embedded in the culture of the community for ages. The aim is to construct a contextual theological perspective promoting an equal relationship between humans and nature based on justice, love, and solidarity instead of domination and exploitation.

This article (part two) evaluates the examples given from the works of Asian theologians (in part one) by considering their hermeneutical positions in the inter-scriptural discussion through the insights of the theology of religions and interreligious hospitality. Herewith, the insights of theology of religion as a critical lens. The next step is an elaboration of the examples through this lens. Afterwards, the historical developments behind the cross-textual reading are also briefl y searched. The following discussions include Archie Lee’s approach which emphasizes (a) the relation between text and the context of readers within their Asian hybrid set of locations as well as (b) the process of interrelating the two texts with each other. Some critical remarks as well as constructive contributions to the post-colonial bible reading and Indonesian contextual reading are raised. At last, this article offers a hermeneutical standpoint by elaborating how a cross-textual reading of sacred texts can function as an important instrument within the field of interreligious dialogue.
