Sr. Editor After reading the article by Lobato-Jeri, C et al. which is entitled "Clinical surgical characteristics of patients aged 75 years or older colostomized in the national hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins with DOI: 10.25176/RFMH.v16.n2.667, published in 2016, in your prestigious journal of Facultad de medicina humana de la Universidad Ricardo Palma, I must say that it has been a pleasure to have studied it, because it deals with a very relevant topic for the public health of our country. This study covers the characteristics that exist in elderly patients who underwent colostomy surgery. What caught my attention was that, of the patients analyzed in their publication, a large percentage (42.11%) had unresectable colorectal cancer that caused intestinal obstruction, which led them to have a colostomy.

Objective: To determine the factors associated with the quality of life in older adults with advanced chronic organ failure in a hospital in Lima-Peru. Materials and methods: Observational research, cross-sectional analysis, whose population was made up of 100 older adults, the collection technique was the interview and the instrument the questionnaire through the application of the Barthel index and WHOQoL-Bref. To respond to the study objectives, the non-parametric Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Spearman's Rho tests were applied, considering the significance of 5%. Results: (44) 44% of older adults were over 80 years old, (59) 59% were men, (31) 31% studied a higher technical level, (57) 57% were incumbents in the Navy, (74) 74% had arterial hypertension. The most frequent geriatric syndromes were visual or auditory deficit (82) 82%, insomnia (59) 59%, constipation (52) 52% and malnutrition (47) 47%. The (50) 50% of the older adults presented severe functional dependence. (63) 63% presented quality of life at a medium level. The epidemiological factors associated with low quality of life were age over 80 years (p=0.032, RP=1.818), female sex (p=0.009, RP=2.056), the level of education given by illiterate, primary and secondary school (p=0.025, RP=1.930) and the relationship with the Navy as a family member (p=0.022, RP=1.894). Associated geriatric syndromes were insomnia (p=0.034, RP=1.930), constipation (p=0.000, RP=3.560), pressure injury (p=0.000, RP=2.788) and severe functional dependence (p= 0.000, PR=4.667). However, the multivariate analysis showed that insomnia (p=0.002; RPa=1.166), pressure injury (p=0.016; RPa=1.248) and severe dependence (p=0.000; RPa=1.207) were the associated factors. significantly to the low quality of life in older adults. Conclusions: The factors insomnia, pressure injury and severe dependency were significantly associated with low quality of life in older adults with advanced chronic organ failure in a hospital in Lima-Peru.

Introduction: Quality of life is one of the main concerns for cancer patients in palliative care; however, studies on quality of life in these patients are limited. Objective: To determine the factors associated with quality of life in patients with oncological disease in palliative care. Methods: Observational, analytical study in 184 cancer patients treated in a Pain and Palliative Care Unit during 2021. The dependent variable was quality of life; independent variables were age, sex, education level, occupation, oncological diagnosis, disease duration, and stage. Crude (RP) and adjusted (aRP) prevalence ratios were calculated with a 95% confidence level. Results: The median age was 63 years, and 66.3% were female. Factors associated with quality of life were breast cancer (aRP=1.21; 95% CI: 1.07-1.36; p!<0.010), prostate cancer (aRP=1.36; 95% CI: 1.18-1.56; p!<0.010), or multiple myeloma (aRP=1.33; 95% CI: 1.15-1.53; p!<0.010), compared to other cancers such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, stomach, kidney, or pancreatic cancer; disease duration longer than 36 months (aRP=1.13; 95% CI: 1.01-1.27; p=0.040), and stage III (aRP=1.30; 95% CI: 1.19-1.42; p!<0.010) were also associated with quality of life. Conclusions: Factors associated with quality of life were having breast, prostate, or multiple myeloma cancer, compared to having another type of cancer; in addition to a disease duration longer than 36 months and stage III compared to stage I/II.

Introduction: Appetite traits (RA) are part of the eating behavior of the person, with a series of continuous responses that are related to the choice and consumption of food, but also to aspects at the moment in which the feeding is carried out, the frequency of meals, the place where they take place, the company with which they are shared, among others. These factors can have a significant impact on the way a person eats and on their long-term health. Objective: To analyze the possible connection between maternal eating behavior, with the body composition of the adolescent, from a high school in the city of Allende, Nuevo León, Mexico. Material and methods. A quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational study was carried out. The period of the present study was February-August 2022, the population was 41 couples (mother and adolescent son between 12 and 17 years old), from a high school in the municipality of Allende, Nuevo León, Mexico. To test the hypothesis, Spearman's correlation coefficient was obtained. Results. When running the statistical test, it was found that there is no significant correlation between the level of eating behavior of the mother and the body composition of the adolescent (r = -0.174, p = 0.277), therefore, the hypothesis of investigation. Conclusions. It was found that the eating behavior of the mother is not significantly related to the body composition of the adolescents with the sample considered in the present study.

Objective: To determine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with positive attitudes towards sexuality in older adults seen in the outpatient clinic of the Hipólito Unanue National Hospital from september to december, 2021. Methods: Cross-sectional analytical observational study, which included 227 adult patients over 60 years of age from the outpatient clinic of the HNHU geriatrics service attended by teleconsultation. Attitudes towards sexuality were measured by applying the Questionnaire of Attitudes towards Sexuality in Older Adults, dividing the result into positive and negative attitudes.Results: 86.3% of older adults have a positive attitude towards sexuality, the age of 60 to 79 years was presented in 73% of these patients, higher education was higher in the group with positive attitude (47%), 53.6% of the patients with a positive attitude reported having a current partner, having received educational talks increases the probability of a positive attitude towards sexuality by 3.12 times. In the bivariate analysis, there was a statistically significant association between age 60 to 79 years (RP: 1.31, 95%CI: 1.12-1.52, p<0.001), higher education (RP: 1.19, 95%CI: 1.08-1.31, p=0.001), having a current partner (RP: 1.32, 95%CI: 1.19-1.46, p<0.001), having received educational talks (RP: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.03-1.24, p=0.033). In the multivariate analysis, an association was found between having a current partner and a positive attitude towards sexuality (RPa: 1.177, 95%CI: 1.09-1.26, p<0.001).Conclusions: There is a high frequency of positive attitude towards sexuality in older adults, and having a current partner was an independent associated factor.

Mr. Editor: Acute appendicitis represents the most prevalent abdominal surgical condition globally, affecting approximately 10% of the population. Notably, its incidence is higher during the second and third decades of life, constituting the main cause of acute abdomen in the young adult population. In view of its prevalence, it is imperative that an early diagnosis be established and appropriate treatment applied to prevent associated complications. It is important to note that the mortality rate for uncomplicated cases is 0.6%, but it can rise to between 2-3% in cases of perforation and 5-15% in the elderly population.

Introduction: Self-medication is a common practice to alleviate symptoms of various diseases, in the child population such as pharyngitis and rhinopharyngitis that are common in health centers in Peru. Objective: To determine the factors associated with self-medication in children with upper respiratory tract diseases. Material and methods: Analytical cross-sectional observational study. The sample size was 206 parents who went with their children to the Emergency service. A questionnaire approved by Valenzuela M was used. and the SPSS program to find the frequency, the bivariate analysis and the multivariate analysis of Poisson logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of self-medication in children was 91,3%. Parents who only studied primary and secondary school were more likely to self-medicate their children PRa=1,22 (95% CI: 1,01-1,40). the first-born were protected from self-medication PRa=0,86 (95% CI: 0,76-0,97). Parents who were between 20 and 29 years of age obtained PRa=1,04 (95% CI: 0,96-1,13), children under 7 years old, PRa=0,99 (95% CI: 0,91-1,07) and parents of family that had 1 child PRa=1,04 (95% CI:0,90-1,20). Conclusions: The educational level and the order number of the child, such as being the first-born, had a significant association with self-medication in children.

Parents who were between 20 and 29 years of age obtained PRa=1,04 (95% CI: 0,96-1,13), children under 7 years old, PRa=0,99 (95% CI: 0,91-1,07) and parents of family that had 1 child PRa=1,04 (95% CI:0,90-1,20). Conclusions: The educational level and the order number of the child, such as being the first-born, had a significant association with self-medication in children.","PeriodicalId":33139,"journal":{"name":"Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45663373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mr. Editor: I had the opportunity to review an article published in the first edition of the journal of the Facultad de Medicina Humana de la Universidad Ricardo Palma this year, which is entitled consumption of foods rich in antioxidants in outpatients with diabetic retinopathy at the hospital la carlota during 2021, identified with DOI n° 10.25176/RFMH.v22i1.4121 and written by Raquel Martínez-Kurata, et al., where they sought to find the amount of antioxidant consumption focusing on vitamins C, E and selenium in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), which managed to capture my attention and aroused my curiosity, motivating me to seek more information about it. Let me comment on some points of view in common with the authors.

Introduction: Older adults are susceptible to malnutrition and vitamin deficiency. Objective: To determine the association between the low level of vitamin B12 and cognitive deterioration in older adults from the Naval Medical Center, located in Lima-Peru, in the period 2010-2015. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out, based on a secondary analysis of the Texas-Cemena UTMB 2010-2015 database of the Center for Research on Aging (CIEN) of the University of San Martín de Porres. To quantify the cognitive impairment variable, the MiniMental Test was used. To analyze the association, the Chi-square test and Poisson regression were performed. Results: 57.6% of the patients were male and the mean age was 78 ± 8.4. 41.2% presented cognitive deterioration and 9.5% of the patients presented vitamin B12 deficiency. The factors independently associated with cognitive impairment were a history of cerebrovascular disease (PR= 1.38 95% CI [1.24-1.53]), depression (PR= 1.88 95% CI [1.80-1 .97]) and vitamin B12 deficiency (PR = 1.10 95% CI [1.01-1.20]). Conclusions: In the present study, an association was found between a low level of vitamin B12 and cognitive deterioration in older adults.
