Summary form only given. To summarize, multiple-wavelength InGaAs DBR QW VCSEL arrays with low threshold (420 /spl mu/A) and wide wavelength span (44.8nm) are achieved by using improved p-mirror design and AlAs wet oxidation. Through the device size control and less heat dissipation from the low-voltage p-DBR laser, single-mode operation is also obtained over a 20.8nm span.

The threshold gain and the cavity loss are important parameters for the optimum design of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL). Here we try to determine the cavity loss by varying the amount of light fed back to the VCSEL using an external mirror. The tested VCSEL consists of a superlattice active region surrounded by AlAs/Al/sub 0.3/Ga/sub 0.7/As distributed Bragg reflectors. The nonlinear gain effect is introduced in estimating the internal parameters of VCSELs. Since most VCSELs operate at a carrier density much higher than the transparency level, the nonlinear gain effect should be nonnegligible and be considered. Therefore, this method is appropriate even for a large threshold-gain (like the VCSEL) and/or a large amount of the feedback light (more than a few percents).

In conclusion, we carried out a bidirectional crossconnection experiment using semiconductor optical amplifiers. The experiment show the input dynamic range can be 15 dB from -25 dBm to -10 dBm at a bit rate of 1 Gb/s with a power penalty of less than 1 dB. The feasibility of bidirectional cross-connection using SOA's is confirmed with this experiment.

The high cost of laser transmitters has prevented the realization of FTTH in the foreseeable future. The authors have developed high-performance 1.3 /spl mu/m laser diodes which have the potential to render the high-cost components inside the transmitter dispensable and greatly reduce the cost of transmitters. Low-cost fabrication, tight lot-to-lot control, excellent device yield, and uniform parameter distributions have been simultaneously achieved. With further structure and process optimizations, we have reduced threshold currents to as low as 6 mA at 25/spl deg/C, while maintaining high T/sub 0/ of 85 K.

Summary form only given. We report the first room temperature, continuous wave operation of an optical flip-flop in which there are two stable lasing states, in close analogy to a S-R latch in electrical circuits. Bistable laser diodes have important applications as optical memory elements in future high-speed all-optical time-division switching systems, as demonstrated by Suzuki, see J. of Lightwave Technology, vol.LT-4, p.894, 1986. Compared with the two section, single mode bistable laser diode used in their experiment which must be turned off electrically, this device can be reset by the application of an optical trigger and is therefore more flexible.

In this paper we report what we believe to be the strongest waveguide gratings to date written by UV exposure of germanosilicate rib waveguides grown by PECVD, and without the use of hydrogen loading. Gratings of this strength should be more than adequate for fabricating WDM devices.

Bragg gratings in fiber and planar waveguides are now coming into practical use for telecommunications, data communications, and signal processing applications. New high power fiber lasers are also using fiber gratings. Various devices for these applications require different types of Bragg gratings. Reliability and low cost manufacturing issues are important for utilization of the gratings in practical systems.

This paper reports the modelling of tapered fibre filters using the beam propagation method (BPM) for solving the corresponding propagation equation. The results of the numerical approach are compared with the experiments by using simulation parameters related to the fabrication process.

Very recently, Chittibabu et al. (1996) have successfully synthesized a polythiophene containing a methane side chain, poly[2-(3-thienyl) ethanol n-butoxy carbonylmethyl methane] (PURET), in order to improve the solubility. In this paper a single-layered light-emitting device structure was fabricated by spin-coating the PURET dissolved in strong polar solvent onto an indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. Photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra of the device were measured.
