Abstract. Travel writing, a subgenre of literature, depicts a writer's journey in visiting unfamiliar places. The author experienced negotiation between himself and the others about similarities or differences. In the travel writing, a reality is a reference emphasized the most, rather than mere imagination or fiction. This study aims to examine the representation of travel writing in Un Métier de Rêve by Gabriel García Márquez and to uncover the influence of the narrator's personal perspective (the self) on his view of Europeans (the others). The story in short story Un Métier de Rêve is one of Gabriel García Márquez's travel stories included in Douze Contes Vagabonds. This type of research is descriptive-analytic research using literature studies. The data collection technique involves reading, noting, and sorting. In analyzing the data, which includes words, phrases, dialogues, monologues, feelings, and behavior of the characters, the researcher conducted data interpretation by proving or debating a matter through valid evidence using Carl Thompson's travel writing theory, which consists of three concepts, namely: Reporting the World, Revealing the Self, and Representing the Other. The results of the study on Gabriel García Márquez's Un Métier de Rêve show that Márquez seeks to portray the world he encountered rationally and objectively, even the subjective element found in the short story still appears to be objective. As a result, there is an ambiguity found that is uncovered due to the contestation between fact and fiction in travel writing. In addition, the influence of the ideology of the former colonial state apparently provides a particular emphasis on Márquez's strategy in writing his travel stories. Keywords: Gabriel García Márquez, Travel Writing, Literatur

Abstract. Masculinity is a construction formed by society because of the expectations of men in society, so various forms of masculinity emerge. The Yakuza group is a group that is very synonymous with masculinity and is even referred to as the world of men. However, in reality, their masculine form shackles them in social interaction. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of Yakuza masculinity so that there will be visible differences in the forms of masculinity between Yakuza and society in general. Yakuza masculinity has a general concept of masculinity, or is called hegemonic masculinity. However, forms of masculinity that are too extreme make their masculinity marginal. That happens because of differences in the interpretation of masculinity by society toward certain groups. The data is from images and dialogues representing Yakuza forms of masculinity in Gokusen manga. Data collection used a literature review technique, and data analysis used a qualitative descriptive technique. The findings suggest that masculinity owned by the Yakuza group represents a form of hegemonic masculinity, but the form of masculinity becomes a problem for its existence. The form of masculinity has a dual identity as a tool of legitimacy and a means of subordination to individuals and groupsKeywords: Hegemonic, Marginal Masculinity, Masculinity, Yakuza Masculinity, Yakuza

Abstract. This study aimed to investigate the challenges and strategies faced by undergraduate students in Islamic Higher Education when writing theses. The study had four participants, two of whom completed their degrees on time (SGO) and two who failed to do so (SGN). Despite both groups facing challenges and employing strategies, they had some differences in their experiences. Common issues faced by both groups were difficulty generating ideas, selecting a topic, feeling confused and anxious, and procrastination due to various reasons. SGN students faced additional problems such as laziness, unexpected events, and issues with supervisors. The study also found that family support and spiritual practices like prayers and invocations helped students complete their theses. The support and encouragement from their parents served as a significant boost to the students' motivation in finishing the thesis. The study highlights the importance of surrendering to Allah's plan and trusting His wisdom, as well as maintaining a positive outlook and seeking support from family and spirituality. Overall, the study uncovered various problems faced by undergraduate students and the strategies they used to deal with them, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and relying on Allah's guidance. Keywords: Thesis Writing, Challenges, Strategies, Islamic Higher Education, Narrative Inquiry

Abstract. This research tried to map the strength and weaknesses and evaluate the English teaching and learning processes in Balinese EFL learners during the online class. The use of IT in online learning has become a central issue for the decreasing of students’ motivation due to the lack of students – teachers’ interaction in the online class especially in English subject. The complexities in the online learning include how the use of IT can be synchronized with teaching and learning methods in delivering the learning material, how is the role of the teacher in motivating students, how to assess students' abilities in online learning, and many more. Those are the unavoidable obstacles faced by teachers and students during the online learning. This study was aimed at evaluating and making English online teaching and learning effective and creating IT-based application to optimized the teaching and learning process and the students’ performance. This qualitative research collects the data through observation , interviews and English speaking test to 15 students and six teachers. From the empirical studies of the Balinese EFL learners, the students stated that English learning in online classroom atmosphere were ineffective and unsupportive for their English skill development. The problems mainly arise from the lack of practice and interaction which caused a decrease in student motivation and interest in online learning. To be able to overcome those problems, the researcher created learning applications called Speaking Test App. and Teacher Speaking Test App. to facilitate teachers and students in learning process. This application can be freely accessed through the Playstore and Appstore. The students and teachers use the learning applications as interactive English learning mediums in the classrooms. The results of the study showed that with the technology-based learning media, the students' performance, enthusiasm and motivation in learning could be improved and highlight a significant impact for interaction in learning especially in English online learning. Keywords: English teaching and learning, IT-based learning, Online Learning

Abstract. Due to the implementation of distance learning policy in Indonesia, the usual class is suspended as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Since then, the demand of innovative teaching involving the use of computer assisted learning tools increases progressively. Undeniable, a distance learning scheme has not been able to outperform a conventional face-to-face classroom learning. One of the problems was encountered in Production Écrite Elimentaire (hereafter PEE) class, where lecturers could not monitor students’ writing progress directly. This study aims at developing a Padlet based writing course by integrating local culture using Systemic Functional Linguistic Genre Based pedagogy (SFL-GBP) adopting ADDIE approach. In order to achieve this objective, three lecturers and 32 students were involved to validate the result of Padlet product. This research used two kinds of instruments i.e., an open-ended questionnaire and an experts’ rubric. The open-ended questionnaire was used to identify students’ needs in PEE course, and the experts’ rubric was used to examine Padlet by regarding the appropriateness of material and language, the procedure of SFL-GPB, and the media. The overall mean scores of the experts' judgement towards the Padlet feasibility shows significant figures, i.e., the material aspects gained 3.7, the appropriateness was 3.8, and the media reached 3.7. On the other hand, the results of the students' opinion analysis also show a positive figure where the mean score for material as well as language aspects were 3.9, and media aspect had 3.75 mean score. The findings. The findings of this study were expected to have a further contribution to the development of comprehensive teaching syllabuses, materials, as well as lesson plans for French-language classrooms in the university, especially integrating local culture and the SFL Pedagogy approach. Abstract. Along with the rising influence of Japanese in many spheres of life, many language learners around the world have learned Japanese. Kyoukasho, which means "Japanese language textbooks," are the main books that people who don't speak Japanese use to learn Japanese. Many features of Japanese linguistics may be found in Kyoukasho, one of which is subclause construction. A compound sentence in Japanese must include linking elements. These elements connect the subclause to the main clause. As a result, the purpose of this research is to discover how Kyoukasho explains the use of connecting constituents of time in subclause to form compound sentences. Thistudy is necessary because it can assist Japanese learners in better understanding sentence construction. This was a literary study that used a descriptive-qualitative approach. To obtain the result, data were obtained from six Kyoukasho regularly used by Indonesian higher education institutions to teach Japanese and evaluated using agih and matching analytical approaches. This study drew two conclusions about the use of linking constituents: their use in the sequence of events and their use in the temporal order. There were three events completed for the sequence of events, namely: after, before, and concurrent events, and four orders concluded for the time order, namely: starting-ending, starting, ending, and neutral. Aside from this, this study discovered that the duration of the actions in the concurrent event affects the structure as well. The event is divided into three categories here: open-closed, complete, and partial. Keywords: Time Subclause, Constituents, Japanese Grammars

Abstract. This research looked at errors made by the sophomores majoring in English Education of Tadulako University in writing analytical exposition text. It intends to (1) identify the kinds of errors committed by the students in writing the text, and (2) determine the causes of the errors. This is a-qualitative research, employing 20 students enrolled in Text Type Writing course in the Academic Year 2020. Results of the data analysis indicated that there were 421 cases of errors which were then classified into five major categories: orthographic errors, word forms and grammar (morpho-syntactic errors), errors on words and meanings (lexico-semantic), errors in punctuation and errors in capitalization. These errors are caused by influence of the students’ first language (L1) (interlingual errors), lack of target language knowledge (intralingual errors), and communication strategies. This paper addresses error analysis using Dulay’s 1982 Linguistic Category Taxonomy, which so far lack considerably in scientific literature. Previous studies have almost exclusively focused on using Surface Structure Taxonomy, another taxonomy is therefore needed for investigation. Abstract. In this new era, teaching and learning activities have been associated with the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). In the context of English language learning, ICT is a resource and tool for supporting students in their learning process. With the use of different English learning activities, ICT offers students a range of sources to obtain authentic content and improve their language abilities. This research aims to analyze the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perspectives on the use of ICT-based learning in their learning activities and the contribution of ICT-based learning to the learning activities. This is a quantitative descriptive study. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), developed by Davis (1985) and improved version used in ELT classroom activities by Castro (2019) were incorporated in this study. 31 students from the English language Department of University Mataram were the sample of the study. The data were gathered using three instruments which are online questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The instruments used in this study to examine the perspectives of EFL students on ICT-based learning. The findings are analyzed using SPSS, and Spearman's Rho test. This is to determine how closely the two variables (ICT and Learning English} are related. The findings showed that the majority of the students have positive perspectives on ICT-based learning because it is relatively easy to use, and learning activities is significantly correlated with its usefulness. Given that the two variables in the data have a linear relationship and a positive correlation coefficient (0.665). Thus, it can be concluded that the better ICT quality improves, the better the quality of students' English learning. Keywords: English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Students Perspectives, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)
