This paper presents a novel method for the estimation of the lead-acid battery initial state of charge (SOC) using the battery impedance measurement. The initial SOC is a crucial value used in the commonly used Coulomb counter. An experimental test bench for battery characterization and impedance measurement is built using CompactRio and Labview software. A very simple electrical circuit is proposed and designed allowing the determination of the initial SOC. Mathematical formulas are derived allowing obtaining a good estimation of the initial SOC. The simulation results are validated experimentally.

It is desirable and advantageous to feed parallel propulsion with induction motors by a single voltage source inverter. However, effects of deviation of the wheel diameters on motor current, rotor speed and torque should be also considered for parallel operation. In order to understand the behavior and characteristics, a simple simulation model is developed by using a commercial Matlab Simulink. From the results, it is clear to manage the diameter deviation of the wheels which are connected to traction motors.

This paper proposes an approximated harmonics analysis based LCL filter design methodology for a grid connected PWM inverter. Unlike conventional LCL filter design methods which usually adapts a complicated, trial-and-error, and time-consuming procedure, the proposed methodology provides the straightforward design result without a recursive procedure, by using a approximated harmonic analysis and a correlations between design specifications. The theoretical harmonic analysis and derivation of the proposed methodology are provided in detail, and the step-by-step design procedure is presented. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is verified through various simulation results by using PSIM software.

A novel electrified bicycle using only ultracapacitors as the primary energy storage components are described. A specific buck converter to charge the e-bike in less than two minutes has been designed and simulated. The simulation of the associated fast-charging system shows that this technology is feasible for the intended application. Novel ultracapacitors, made from Carbon Nano-Onion materials, have been produced and the impedance spectra were measured. The data were fitted to an equivalent electrical model and the parameters for the ultracapacitors were determined. It is possible to increase the total viable e-bike distance by 22% by using nanocarbon materials, such as nano-onions, for energy storage.

Electrical insulators in 22kV distribution system of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) are mostly porcelain insulator types that consists of suspension, pin type, line post, and pin post insulators. The distribution lines will be polluted by industrial contaminants, salt fog or natural dust. Experience shows that pollution flashover is one of the main natural calamities harming and affecting the voltage stability and reliability of distribution system. This paper compares the test results obtained from artificial pollution tests according to IEC 60507 with line post type and pin post type insulators of medium system under same test conditions. The salt fog test results indicate that the pollution flashover performance of line post insulator is less than to 50 percent of wet power frequency withstand voltage at equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) = 0.5 mg/cm2 and the leakage current (LC) of line post insulator increased to 10.2 mA at ESDD = 0.5 mg/cm2 at nominal voltage. In the experiment indicate that AC pollution flashover performance of pin post insulator has better than line post insulator in the serious pollution area.

The benefit of having an energy storage onboard an Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) is investigated in terms of fuel saving. Seven different operational modes with different loading profiles have been introduced for the vessel. The ship uses an LVDC distribution system to share power among sources, and distribute power among different loads. To simulate this hybrid electric power system, a nonlinear programming method is used to identify the optimal power sharing criteria between generators and the energy storage. The control strategy is based on the diesel generators loading level, which is implemented in MATLAB®. A comparison is made by counter posing the simulation results of the ship power system, before and after using the energy storage. The simulation results show improved fuel consumption in the hybrid electric system for all operational modes, particularly for dynamic positioning and harbor modes.

Based on the analysis of configuration of Range Extended Electric Bus (REEB), the article studies two energy management strategy, which are Charge-Depleting Charge-Sustaining (CDCS) and blended type. On the foundation of creating a vehicle simulation model, the article takes a simulation analysis on the economy of Range Extended Electric Bus. Take the Chinese city bus driving cycle conditions of daily travel mileage 200km for example, the simulation results show that comparing with blended control strategy, Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) application load following control methods with CDCS management strategy have certain improvement on the electric consumption and fuel consumption.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has been used to drive a number of vehicles. PMSM has high torque density, high efficiency and wide speed range. However, the high cost of permanent magnets is viewed as a disadvantage. This paper presents a technique that can increase the torque density by modifying the shape of permanent magnets and minimizing the magnet volume. Models were compared by increasing the thickness and the width of permanent magnets to increase the torque density. The result confirmed that increasing the width of permanent magnets was much more effective than increasing the thickness.
