Variable interactions in risk factors for dementia
Jim O'Donoghue, M. Roantree, A. Mccarren
Current estimates predict 1 in 3 people born today will develop dementia, suggesting a major impact on future population health. As such, research needs to connect specialist clinicians, data scientists and the general public. The In-MINDD project seeks to address this through the provision of a Profiler, a socio-technical information system connecting all three groups. The public interact, providing raw data; data scientists develop and refine prediction algorithms; and clinicians use in-built services to inform decisions. Common across these groups are Risk Factors, used for dementia-free survival prediction. Risk interactions could greatly inform prediction but determining these interactions is a problem underpinned by massive numbers of possible combinations. Our research employs a machine learning approach to automatically select best performing hyperparameters for prediction and learns variable interactions in a non-linear survival-analysis paradigm. Demonstrating effectiveness, we evaluate this approach using longitudinal data with a relatively small sample size.

B. Pernici
Summary form only given. The trend towards more and more efficient computing resources, yet preserving quality of service, is particularly relevant in datacenters and in cloud infrastructures, where a rigorous and adequate management of resources is performed. Resource monitoring, optimization criteria, adaptive mechanisms are being intensively studied from constantly improving efficiency and reducing the environmental impact. The research directions, considering in particular the IT part of such infrastructures and the characteristics of applications running on them will be analyzed, considering also the experience derived from two European projects in the area: GAMES and ECO2Clouds.

An item/user representation for recommender systems based on bloom filters
Manuel Pozo, Raja Chiky, F. Meziane, Elisabeth Métais
This paper focuses on the items/users representation in the domain of recommender systems. These systems compute similarities between items (and/or users) to recommend new items to users based on their previous preferences. It is often useful to consider the characteristics (a.k.a features or attributes) of the items and/or users. This represents items/users by vectors that can be very large, sparse and space-consuming. In this paper, we propose a new accurate method for representing items/users with low size data structures that relies on two concepts: (1) item/user representation is based on bloom filter vectors, and (2) the usage of these filters to compute bitwise AND similarities and bitwise XNOR similarities. This work is motivated by three ideas: (1) detailed vector representations are large and sparse, (2) comparing more features of items/users may achieve better accuracy for items similarities, and (3) similarities are not only in common existing aspects, but also in common missing aspects. We have experimented this approach on the publicly available MovieLens dataset. The results show a good performance in comparison with existing approaches such as standard vector representation and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD).

An automated tool support for managing implicit requirements using Analogy-based Reasoning
Onyeka Emebo, O. Daramola, C. Ayo
Systems requirements are crucial to the proper functioning of a software and must be met for a project to be successful. Hence the need for its effective management. Implicit Requirements (IMRs) however are difficult to manage as a result of their nature-vague, unclear, and ambiguous amongst other characteristics. The process of requirement management is a continuous cycle as change in requirements and emergence of new requirements occur in a system. Hence the need for a tool/approach which identifies and manages requirements (implicit and explicit) effectively. However, most systems do not manage implicit requirements as a lot of attention is focused on explicit requirements. This research presents an approach for identification and management of IMRs using Analogy-based Reasoning in combination with two other core technologies (Ontology and Natural Language Processing). The approach is supported by a prototype tool, which was assessed by conducting a preliminary evaluation. The results indicate that the approach enables for early identification of IMRs when used with a good domain ontology and is potentially suitable for application in practice by experts.

The Sol y Agua project will augment the learning environment of middle school students with the creation of a computer game based on regional issues explored through information overload, virtual simulations, and real world data [1]. The game has a theme of water sustainability and stewardship with an emphasis on information analysis, negotiation, and decision-making. The game will also immerse students in themes concerning biodiversity, sustainability, and the human impact on the environment. The various activities will allow student to make informed decisions regarding water sources, maintenance, environmental factors, and sustainability, among others. The students will learn the impact of humans on the environment through data analysis and run experiments in a virtual laboratory with real data. Data visualization will allow students to interpret data in new, fun, and meaningful ways. The game has an emphasis in promoting the demographic of the Southwest United States and minorities towards developing careers in STEM, where they are largely underrepresented. The game activities have been developed using the Texas Essentials of Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) Standards [2].

An environment for integrating subjective and objective usability findings based on measures
Ahlem Assila, K. Oliveira, H. Ezzedine
The last decade marked the development of a large number of tools for assessing the usability of user interfaces. Those tools are based on different subjective and objective methods. For obtaining a good assessment of usability, integrating findings in a single and complementary manner, is promising. In this paper, we present an evaluation support environment that addresses this issue. This environment is built on the concepts of measurement information model defined by ISO/IEC 15939 standard. This model goes from the collection of base measures extracted from specific evaluation tools to the definition of indicators. These indicators provide a basis framework that integrates measures and supports decision-making. The environment contributes to automate the collection and analysis of measures. Further, it supports the interpretation of results and allows detecting accurate usability problems. Finally, it gives some recommendations for enhancing user interfaces. The feasibility and the execution of the environment are presented into a case study for assessing a traffic supervision system.

This paper introduces a novel approach for secure navigation of wheelchairs. The approach is based on a combination of robotic road train based navigation and Cloud Computing technologies. The navigation strategy is inspired from elephants. Marching trunk to tail, each wheelchair in a platoon takes cues from the wheelchair just in front of it. The leader of navigation is a person. The cloud computing technologies are used to share wheelchairs positions and to send notifications to caregiver. The role of the caregiver is to lead navigation and to watch in real time the navigation progress and to control the system navigation when problems occur. To improve tracking process, two approaches of obstacle detection and avoidance were developed. Some experimental results are given in the paper to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the developed system.

Graph databases have aroused a large interest in the last years thanks to their large scope of potential applications. Defining a language allowing a flexible querying of graph databases may greatly improve usability of data. In this paper, we present a system for querying graph databases in a flexible way. The preferences are based on fuzzy set theory and may concern i) the content of the vertices and ii) the structure of the graph.

Validation, accreditation or certification: A new kind of diagram to provide confidence
Thomas Polacsek
The aim of the argumentation diagram is to organize and visualize, in a synthetic way, all key elements proving the validity of a product's property. The argumentation diagram does not represent the process, but gives the rationale behind all Verification & Validation (V&V) documents. In fact, it lists and organizes necessary evidence in a development life cycle. But the validity of the final assessment requires the validation and the identification of the evidence of each intermediate step. So, in this article, we introduce a generic argumentation pattern and its derivations, whose support a rational organization of all V&V evidence at each step. This pattern stems from legal science and argumentation theory legacies, and it is the basic building block for the argumentation diagram construction.

Automating immediate and personalized feedback taking conceptual modelling education to a next level
Estefanía Serral, Jochen De Weerdt, Gayane Sedrakyan, M. Snoeck
Providing individual and immediate feedback to students is a critical factor for improving knowledge and skills acquisition in higher education. However, a growing number of students with very different heterogeneous profiles and unequal problem solving skills, as well as the lack of teaching resources, make it very challenging and sometimes even impossible to give immediate feedback at individual level. This paper presents a synthesis and progress of a long-term project that addresses this challenge in the context of conceptual modelling by developing SAiLE@CoMo, a smart and adaptive learning environment. By crafting innovative process analytics techniques and expert knowledge on feedback automation, SAiLE@CoMo can automatically provide personalized and immediate feedback to leaners.

However, a growing number of students with very different heterogeneous profiles and unequal problem solving skills, as well as the lack of teaching resources, make it very challenging and sometimes even impossible to give immediate feedback at individual level.
