Following the success of online communities of practices (Online CoPs) in the business sector for the professional development of employees, the idea of fostering the online cultivation of CoPs in educational institutions for the professional development of faculty members has been researched and practiced. Although this topic has not achieved maturity in the literature, this study is based on contingency theory/perspective views that the fundamentals of educational institutions are different from the fundamentals of business organisations. This means the research and implementation of Online CoPs with regard to educational institutions are unique and thus different from those of business organisations. Consequently, this study aimed to highlight the research gaps regarding the methodological approaches, the limited scope and conceptualisation of online CoPs, the limitations of theoretical foundations underlying CoPs, and the benefits and barriers of online CoPs in educational institutions. A critical semi-structured review methodology was employed. The findings expose the critical theoretical limitations and highlight the distinctive barriers and benefits of using online CoPs. Four promising research avenues are successively elaborated for the contingency-based theory development of online CoPs and provide grounds for their implementation in educational institutions.

This study aims to determine the antecedents of brand patronage reduction as a consequence of brand hate, demonstrating the mediating effect of brand avoidance on passive/flight consequences of brand hate, showing their impact on a firm's brand equity. A survey was carried out with a sample of 307 consumers of mobile phone operators. The structural model was analysed using SmartPLS3. The results demonstrated that brand hate is significantly relevant in its impact on patronage reduction and brand equity. The model explained 57,9% of patronage reduction as a consequence of brand hate in a nomological explanation chain of constructs. The research demonstrated how passive/flight behaviours are generated by brand hate, indicating to managers that brand avoidance would be developed and must be prevented in order to reduce the negative impacts on patronage reduction and brand equity. Despite the relevance of negative consumer-brand relationships, no study has adequately explained patronage reduction as a consequence of brand hate. Furthermore, this is the first study to demonstrate the relevant role of brand avoidance, acting as a mediator in the relationship between brand hate and its consequences, presenting negative impacts on patronage reduction and brand equity.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the factors that influence millennials’ intentions to adopt plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Gauteng, South Africa. This study was based on the theory of consumption values (TCV), using structured questionnaires and convenience sampling. Data was collected from 504 respondents in Gau-teng, South Africa. A multiple regression analysis was performed to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings revea-led a significant relationship between social, emotional and conditional values and millennials’ behavioural intentions to adopt PHEVs and demonstrated a non-significant relationship between functional and epistemic values and beha-vioural intentions. Online data collection was used owing to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, which limited the researcher’s abilities to explain items in the questionnaire. Also, the study focused only on millennials residing in Gauteng, which does not accurately represent the behavioural intentions of the entire country. Nevertheless, this study offers useful information to environmentally friendly car manufacturers, car dealerships and the government, for developing strategies aimed at encouraging the adoption of PHEVs among South African millennial consumers.

Customers frequently use social media (SM) platforms to share and seek information about services. Could the content of customer SM interactions be used for new service development (NSD)? This study analyses: (a) Whether social media input is relevant for NSD? (b) What are the preferred social media platforms for NSD? (c) How social media input can be integrated with the current NSD organisational process? The results highlight the importance of social media input in NSD. Facebook leads the social media pack for relevant NSD input. The SMART roadmap for leveraging the power of social media for NSD has also been suggested.

2021AbstractSchool dropout is a serious problem worldwide, and contributes to a great deal of poverty and misery. People who have not finished school obviously suffer the consequences, but these extend to all of society since they become a burden due to lack of education and skills for the workplace. Much like poverty, school dropout is complex and multidimensional. Hence, early warning systems that predict which children are at risk of dropping out of school are of the utmost importance, and furthermore, the interventions to rescue these children must be bespoke, i.e., tailored to the specific situation of each child. Much work has been done using traditional methods such as attendance thresholds and logistic regression. However, school dropout prediction by means of applying machine learning is relatively new. In addition, an application that has worked in one country does not necessarily work in another, since the available data sets are different. Therefore, the following question arises: does machine learning enable a more accurate early warning of school dropout specifically in Chile? In this paper we answer this question, testing and comparing machine learning predictive models with a traditional logistic regression, using public databases from the Chilean Ministry of Education. In addition, we offer some practical recommendations for other researchers and policy makers who endeavour to implement practical working early warning systems for school dropout.

This exploratory study aims to provide initial insight into knowledge risk management. More precisely, it describes whether and to what extent knowledge risk management is practiced in organisations in different selected Latin American countries. A sample of organisations located in different Latin American countries is surveyed in order to understand how knowledge risks are managed, which knowledge risks are managed, and what tools and methods are used to manage these knowledge risks. The study presents information regarding knowledge risk management, as well as knowledge risks that are addressed in public and private organisations in different Latin American countries. Additionally, overviews of the methods used to manage those knowledge risks and the consequences of missing management of knowledge risks are shown. Based on the findings, decision-makers may identify and initiate actions to improve their approach to knowledge risk management. To the best of the author’s knowledge, no quantitative study on the practice of knowledge risk management dedicated to public and private organisations in Latin America has yet been published in academic journals.
