This article analyzes various passages from Claudian’s and Gorippus’s political poems (Claud., Ruf., 2; Theod.; Stil., 3; VI Hon.; Goripp., Laud. Iust. Min., 3) which describe hunting games in the Roman arena (venationes) and have communicative aims: they either praise officeholders (consuls, generals, and emperors), or they criticize their opponents. This theme plays a fundamental role in early imperial poetry. But while early imperial poets (Calpurnius, Statius, Martial, and Juvenal) convey their message of praise or invective with briefer passages, Claudian and Gorippus present concatenated scenes, with the effect of increasingly persuading and impressing the reader. The role of the venatorial subject in Christian poets such as Prudentius (Prud., Ham.; c. Symm.) will be treated as well. Finally, this essay aims to establish when venationes are last attested in (late) Roman poetry.

This paper aims to describe the horizon of expectations concerning praise or eulogy as a literary subgenre in New Spain’s 18th century. I tackle its background in European Renaissance, its affiliation with the rhetorical tradition of acumen or acuity, its inclusion in the university practices of New Spain and the controversy that arose because of that. Although not all intellectuals from New Spain decided to add acumen to university eulogies, the tradition of doing so prevailed.

Este libro compila nueve ponencias divulgadas desde el 2015 al 2017 por la British Academy gracias a la Universidad de Glasgow. Las exposiciones tratan sobre Ancient Scholarship. Según entiendo, esta frase engloba notas sobre educación y cultura, en esencia, helenística y romana. Este volumen se desarrolló en la conferencia ‘Ancient Scholarship: Scholastic Culture in the Hellenistic and Roman Eras’, la cual se celebró del 27 al 28 de abril del 2017 en la Universidad de Glasgow. Esa vez, los eruditos se reunieron para discutir los contactos multiculturales entre Grecia, Roma e Israel a propósito del libro antiguo. La producción, comercialización y discusión de los textos judíos, griegos y latinos fueron el sustento de la tradición oral de la didáctica en la Antigüedad. La introducción (pp. 1-6) de Sean A. Adams propone analizar el contexto diacrónico de la Scholarship. La escuela antigua se basa en la discusión de ideas propias y ajenas, las cuales construyen la cultura y las tradiciones de cada pueblo. Los estudios culturales se realizaron en grupos de lectura y en bibliotecas. La edición usaba determinadas tipografías para distinguir la literatura tradicional de textos legales y religiosos. Scholastic Culture es un concepto que abarca: conservación, comentario, traducción, y crítica de textos en grupos de élite y con autoridad sociocultural. El término Scholarship entonces tiene que ver con léxico, tecnicismos, filología, tradición, historiografía, academias, conservación y retransmisión de la cultura (en este caso: griega, latina, egipcia y judía).

From his soul-dividing model (through a comparison with music 443d) Plato presents in the Republic the predominance of certain virtues in each part and its political meaning. This idea is later developed by other Greek philosophical schools in imperial time. Plutarch’s commentary on the Platonic passage let us know how Neoplatonists, Neo-Pythagoreans and Stoics have enriched the identification between Soul and Virtue with elements taken from the musical system and from the latestdoctrine on virtues, even establishing links with theory of knowledge.

Unamuno’s interest in Classical fables, mainly those influenced by Aesopus, goes beyond the alleged fable’s morals. After practising a meticulous analysis of its elements and also an effective critique, he theorized about what surrounded the genre: its structure, its teachings, etc.; but he also assimilated Aesopus’ fables to his own works under different genres and adapted them to his interests as well as illustrated intertextuality.

In this work the topic of friendship is considered as the main subject in Plato’s Seventh Letter. Among the different terms used to refer to this conception, it is essential to understand hetaíros (“companion”) in order to make a suitable interpretation of its meaning within the letter. So I will recover the distinction made by Plato among companion-friend, companion-relative and companion-fellow to determine the use of hetaíros in the text. Through a synchronic reading I discover a double triadic structure which defines the meaning and relevance of hetaíros within the argumentative structure of the letter.

After Plutus’s recovery of his eyesight and the subsequent redistribution of wealth, an old woman, probably a hetaira, is suddenly abandoned by her young lover, who is now financially solvent and in no more need of her (Aristophanes’ Plutus, ll. 959-1096). The expression of her complaints —in front of Chremylus, the comic hero, and also of the young man, who approaches the hero’s house in order to express his gratitude to the god— results in an episodic scene devoted to the exposition of material precariousness of her decayed body. Behind this comic denigration, usual against old and ugly persons, there are also exposed various forms of body apprehension very subtly, on which this paper intends to explore. We refer to the affective and sensitive construction of corporality, to the dynamics of body language, to the physiological imprint of immateriality (such as pleasure or pain), among several aspects that prove the author’s special interest in the body.
