The three versions of The Nose by Nikolai Gogol refl ect the evolution of the author’s concept and its realization, from a «dream» to an unmotivated incident. The preservation of the elements of the dream from the original version in the 1836 and 1842 publications suggests the presence of the motif in the storylines of both characters, but in an encrypted form. For encoding, the 12 days’ difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendars (March 25 — April 7 in the 1842 edition) was used, which accommodated the events of one night in the original version.

The author’s refl ections on reading The Idiot encompass both his own perception of the characters in the novel, experienced in his adolescence, and the search for the metaphysical foundations that would consolidate the reader’s ideas about Russia and the Russians of the 19th century and the present, as formed by the novel. According to Stasiuk, Rogozhin is the only truly alive character, who stands out against the ghostly environment.

This article touches upon the funeral of A. Blok, as depicted by N. Berberova in her memoirs, The Italics Are Mine (1969). Specifi cally, it analyses the funeral episode in light of her earlier articles, published in 1931 and 1947. We examine the way Berberova modifi ed the story, giving us a unique opportunity to follow her path through memories to memoirs.

The context of D. V. Venevitinov’s philosophical writings reveals an underlying Schellingian content within the sonnet «To Thee, Oh Pure Spirit, the Source of Inspiration…». The particularities of the text’s poetics testify to the role it plays in the emergence of Venevitinov’s lyrical persona. The study of ideological genesis and artistic structure of the poem allows to date it more precisely.

The article explores the construction of the image of Lolita in the novel. Seemingly, the image of Lolita is a complete construct of Humbert’s narration. However, Nabokov’s way of composing the no vel allows certain empirics contributing to formation of Lolita’s image to escape the control of the narrator. In order to understand how Lolita’s image is constructed, it is necessary to analyze how Nabokov constructs Humbert’s narration about Lolita. Humbert’s narration contains certain hidden autonomous signs that diverge from visible dimension of his narration and modify the portrait of Lolita.
