In this article the author discusses scientific and cultural Polish-German relations at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. These considerations are based on the old Polish cosmographers: Wojciech of Brudzew, Jan of Głogów, Wawrzyniec Korwin and Jan of Stobnica. These works show that German scholars were regarded as scientific authorities and were an inspiration and source of knowledge for Polish scholars. However, the cosmological treatise by Jan of Głogów shows that Poles associated Germans with vice and crime, as evidenced by the example of Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea, who was attributed German origins. The picture of Germans and their lands painted by Old-Polish cosmographers is apparently based on ancient and later authors, especially Solinus, Strabon and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini. Significant excerpts from these works were also made available to Polish readers to show them a multifaceted panorama of the Germanic lands. Wawrzyniec Korwin’s treatise also contains the opinions of Germans about Poland and Poles. The western neighbors of Poland–Lithuania were particularly keen on Cracow and its famous university and academic staff. The two nations were undeniably fascinated by each other’s science.

This article explores the Berlin period in the life and work of Stanisław Przybyszewski (1889–1898), one of the most famous writers of Young Poland, particularly focusing on why Przybyszewski – a writer debuting works in German and considered by scholars a Polish-German writer – came to increasingly depreciate his participation in the literature of his Western neighbors. In his memoirs, published before his death, he categorically stated: „I owe German literature – absolutely nothing”. In this essay, the researcher examines the circumstances in which Przybyszewski shone as a writer in the Berlin bohemian circle. Next, she shows how he discredited the entire cultural life of Jung-Deutschland, and renounced his artistic ties established in Germany. Finally, she speculates on why Przybyszewski created an unfavorable image of the German community at the end of the 19th century, and indicates that this process went hand in hand with the self-creation of a Polish writer.

As a Polish writer of German-language works, Artur Becker sees his work and his biography in his self-narrative at the interface of the German language he chose and the Polish culture and language he abandoned due to his emigration to Germany. His novels address the crisis of identity and the search for identity of his characters in exile or on their return to their homeland of Warmia and Masuria. Becker’s collection of essays, published in Polish under the title Kosmopolska i Kosmopolacy. W poszukiwaniu europejskiego domu. Eseje (2019), is also a discourse on the search for identity. The article is an attempt to characterise the Becker’s definition of the term Kosmopolska, which incidentally comes from another émigré writer, A. Bobkowski. Kosmopolska turns out to be an open space, constructed narratively, that is a space of searching for and creating one’s identity in narrative and through language. This form of defining identity is part of P. Ricoeur’s and Ch. Taylor’s concepts of narrative identity. At each stations of the journey through Kosmopolska, Becker explains the many cultural patterns and codes rooted in Polish identity, but also shares his advice, literary experts, and thus becomes a mediator between cultures.
Bobkowski。

This essay is an attempt to portray the Hindenburg O.S. in Upper Silesia as an autobiographical place in the works of the German writer Werner Heiduczek. The space of the town, which he discovered in his childhood and early adolescence, runs through various literary texts that gradually add to and transform the vision of this place. The life on the border of cultures and historical events was his personal experience that contributed to his perception of the hometown and the region.

The article presents selected mechanisms of communication between the Polish participants of the Napoleonic campaign in 1808–1812 and the local population behind the Pyrenees. The sources of information were the memoirs of Polish soldiers fighting on the Iberian Peninsula in the Grande Armée. Even though a significant part of the memoirs focuses on the military aspects of the participation of Poles in the Peninsular War, several do provide a whole spectrum of information about the daily lives of soldiers on foreign ground and many observations regarding the customs of their brothers in arms – mainly the French – as well as the local population. Among the fragments devoted to the non-military aspects of their stay on the Iberian Peninsula, the remarks on the attempts at communication – both verbal and non-verbal – between Poles and Spaniards seem to be particularly interesting. The purpose of this article is to explain why, in many situations, efficient communication could not take place in an intermediary language (French) and how the Polish soldiers dealt with lexical and grammatical structures in the previously unknown Spanish language. It is worth pointing out that language transfer is clearly noticeable – both from the native language of the soldiers (Polish) and from French, which most of Napoleonic soldiers learnt as their first Romance language.

This article aims to present three hypotheses about how the preaching treatise of the Catalan author, Francesc Eiximenis, entitled 'Ars praedicandi populo', ended up in Krakow in the library of Mikołaj Spycymir. For this purpose, three codices, which contain copies of the Eiximenis treatise, were compared to each other. The article also presented in more detail the biography of Nicolaus Spycymir, the owner of the oldest copy of the treatise. The first two hypotheses are related to the Franciscan Order and diplomatic travels and pilgrimages to Compostela. They seem not to be as well-grounded in the sources as the third hypothesis, which concerns the Polish delegations to the Council of Basel and Council delegations coming to Kraków. One of the delegates of the Council was Marc Bonfill, a Catalan theologian and well-known preacher, associated, like Eiximenis, with the University of Lerida and Girona. The article also pays special attention to Bonfill’s associate, Stanisław Sobniowski, who was a close friend of Spycimir. It is possible that Spycymir obtained the treatise on the preaching arts through these connections (Bonfill or Sobniowski). This hypothesis, however, requires further research.

Poetry by Alfred Marek Wierzbicki emphasises conspicuous travel routes, so poems inspired by particular places are easily extractable. By analysing poetic images showing Spain and Latin American countries, the author discusses the nomadic nature of the works presented and reconstructs the poetic creed of the author of 'Stąd i stamtąd' [From here and there]. Tracing the intertextual relationships inscribed in the works, the researcher explains the symbolic code hidden in the landscapes and spaces of cities. As the author of the fictional figure called “Pan Credo” [Mr Credo], Wierzbicki is a poet focused on the axiological issues connected with the significance of human existence and the sense of one’s own permanence.
