This article analyzes the daily and social experience of a group of gay-men, lifestyle migrants, in the city of Mérida, Yucatán (Mexico), to determine if they face discrimination or if they live in a city that can be considered gay-friendly. Through the concept of lifestyle migration and with the support of semi-structured interviews and field observations in the historic center of the city, the contrasting aspects of Mérida in terms of acceptance of the LGBTQ+ population are studied. It is conclude that, for the study group, the city is openly gay-friendly with factors such as their purchasing power and foreigner status contributing to their acceptance.

The objective of the article is to describe the living conditions of theinternational migrant population and their practices of use of urban public spaces in the city of Temuco, Chile. Under a non-experimental, exploratory-descriptive and quantitative design, a survey was applied to a sample of Temuco’s foreigner residents (n= 200), using descriptive statistics for the analysis. The results indicate that the local real estate market shows incipient signs of exclusion, while low rates of use of urban spaces are observed.Theseevidencesareprobably related to the recent nature of migratory flows in the city. The article contributesto thediscussionabout the relationship between urban space and migration from a statistical approach to the intermediate cities ofsouthern Chile, still understudied. It is concluded that it is necessary to analyze the specific realities of neighborhoods to arrive at more conclusive answers.

This study explores the concept of refuge within the Mediterranean in Southern Europe. The theoretical framework addresses the securitization of borders amidst the neoliberal crisis and reflects upon the meaning of displaced life, with a particular emphasis on the precarity and vulnerability of individuals in transit between the global North and South. A mixed methodology is employed, incorporating elements of philosophy, art, and anthropology, aiming to highlight the political construction of otherness and diversity. The material used consist of artistic representations from the World Press Photo award (2015-2020) which reveal multiculturalism as a disguised and paternalistic form of racism. The study proposes ethical-political contributions that position aesthetics as a Eurocentric construction surrounding the current theme of refuge.

Media representation is crucial because all knowledge of political and social issues is inevitably and inherently mediated. The main objective of this article is to analyze the visual representation of migrant women during the period 2015-2019 in three Chilean newspapers: El Mercurio, La Tercera, and Publimetro. To achieve this objective, a corpus of 705 photographs published in these newspapers was examined using a visual analysis methodology. The results show that migrant women are visually circumscribed within larger collectives, during travel, transit, and border crossings; at times, they are also depicted in relation to work and housing, as well as their country of origin and these representations often involve racialized markers; and, in some cases, portray them from a maternal or wife role. Thus, it is concluded that these visual representations position migrant women as another passive individuals without agency.

In the current migration system, mobility in an irregular context affects the migrant body physically and mentally. This article seeks to identify the ways irregular Central American migrants in transit through Mexico continue their journey northwards despite the physical demands of the route. Through the analysis of forty-two in-depth interviews with migrants, it shows how migrants respond to this experience through a repertoire of actions developed in a context of marginalization. Two practices illustrate the strategies and resources they use to resist. The first is the mobilization of a cultural capital of migration within both local and transnational social networks in their countries of origin, transit, and destination, through economic and technological resources. The second is physical and mental resistance based on optimism underpinned by values such as the family and faith.

In the population history of Veracruz, a state in southeastern Mexico and a maritime entry port to the country, the arrival of people to the region has been prevalent. However, in the 21st Century, Veracruz was incorporated into the international migration flows to the United States. In this context, the objective of this study is to analyze the recent flows of emigrants from Veracruz to the northern border of Mexico and the United States, as well as the dynamic of return migration and the immigration of foreigners. Taking a demographic and quantitative perspective, this research focuses on the decade from 2010 to 2020, with a specific emphasis on regional and municipal analysis. The results show that international emigration and immigration are phenomena that occur within specific regions and municipalities, and that, only in three out of ten regions do the departure and return of Veracruz residents and the arrival of foreigners to the state converge, particularly individuals from Central America and Venezuela.

This article explores the intrusion of power into the lives of migrant populations in Mexico during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing from biopolitical theories, a documentary analysis of the state of Nuevo León, and interviews with key actors from civil society, it reveals control mechanisms that pathologize migrants. Contrary to official discourses, the exercise of power is characterized by two dynamics of disposability: an almost exclusive focus on repressive migration policies and a policy of omission that denies migrants in irregular situations access to healthcare services. Whether intentionally implemented or as an unreflective practice by authorities based on supposed health risks, these biopolitical devices align with the needs of the current hegemonic economic system, against which individuals develop strategies of resistance in an attempt to emancipate themselves from the forms of oppression that afflict them.

This article describes and characterizes the floating and pendular migration flows of a group of Venezuelan women in the border city of Arauca, Colombia. Using a qualitative methodological approach, field observations, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and a literature review of updated academic, regulatory, and institutional texts were conducted in an area of study with limited gender-based description. Thus, this study highlights the role of Venezuelan women as active migrant subjects and concludes that the labor, family, and social trajectories of the interviewed women are transversely modified by their migration experience, as they are subjected to various risks that expose their vulnerability as migrant women, in addition to risks derived from xenophobia and discrimination. Paradoxically, the migratory diaspora represents their only hope for having a better quality of life.

This article provides a critical analysis of the mobility, labor, and political strategies of migration from Spain to Brussels following the 2008 economic crisis, comparing it with past migration flows. The data used in this study is based on fieldwork conducted from 2018 to 2020, which involved qualitative interviews with Spanish migrants. The results allow us to identify two distinct mobility profiles: first, individuals who relocated to Brussels and interrupted their labor trajectories in Spain, and second, those who migratedas part of a transnational professional project. These two profiles exhibit different strategies in terms of mobility, labor insertion, and transnational political participation. Our analysis contributes to the existing literature onnew intra-European mobilities from South to North, specifically focusing on the context of Brussels as a global city with dual characteristics, which provides opportunities as well as precarious conditions for these new migrants.
