Demographic processes and brief overview of population research in Czechia and Slovakia after dissolution of the common state The study makes a brief overview of the demographic processes and research on them in Czechia and Slovakia during the past three decades, the period following the splitting of the common Czechoslovak state. General trends in selected demographic processes are identified and described. Research is summarised and critically evaluated in three basic areas: an analysis of recent trends, forecasting and, finally, applied demographic research. The study focuses more on applied research and forecasting because they have been less frequently appearing in the recent review studies. We intentionally omit the structures and general population dynamics. While recognizing several advancements in developing research topics and methodologies, and their increasing representation in prestigious journals, this study also highlights certain reservations and future challenges inherent to these developments.

Evaluation of cross - border cooperation in Czechia since 1993: Euroregions on the way to authentic cross - border regions? Thirty years of existence of independent Czechia are connected with growing cross - border cooperation (CBC) with neighboring states and decreasing importance of national borders. The accession to the EU meant a giant leap towards de - bordering, which was recently disrupted by a few crises. CBC, represented primarily by Euro-regions, has its specifics in each analyzed border region. In the text, based on long - term research of CBC in the Czech borderlands, literature review, statistical data ana - lysis, and own qualitative research, we look at the institutional dimension of cross - border integration and propose measuring the performance of Euroregions while focusing on their (INTERREG - funded) projects and the existence of functional working groups assisting in eliminating border barriers. The developed matrix singles out three groups of the Euroregions in the Czech borderlands with different levels of institutional activity.

The trade - off between national growth and interregional inequality: Three decades of regional development in Slovakia The article deals with regional development in Slovakia during the last 30 years. In the overview part, we elaborate on the theoretical framework and contextual conditions of regional development in the transformation and integration period. In the empirical part, we discuss the trade - off theory of national growth and regional inequality in the context of the Kuznets - Williamson inverted U hypothesis (if growth is maintained, inequalities increase in the initial stage and decrease in the advanced stage of economic development). The aim of this paper is to uncover the trend and scale of regional inequalities. The results of our work confirm that Slovakia has entered the second stage of regional development, in which regional inequality decreases, but at the cost of falling behind the EU27 and decline in economic performance of Bratislava.

The aim of this paper is to map the development of the foreign relations of the Slovak Republic in the period 1993 – 2022. The political - geographical analysis is based on real Slovak external interactions with selected key powers (the US, Russia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and China) in the form of three thousand government visits. Using the classical geopolitics approach, we focus on data - driven research represented by official Slovak government visits. We compare these results throughout the government periods and with the strategic official documents represented by the number of mentions of those countries. In addition, we pointed out the dichotomy between the Slovak government ’ s interaction with Russia and Ukraine since 1993. The analysis results show that while the US and Russia have a prominent position in the official foreign policy documents, the reality embedded in Slovak interactions based on government visits is focused on geographically closer countries such as Germany and France.

Land cover changes over the past 30 years in the Demänovka river catchment Many protected areas in Slovakia are under increasing pressure of deforestation and urbanisation. The Demänovka river catchment is one of the most affected. The river valley is famous for its largest cave system in the Carpathians, as a critical drinking water resource and nature values of international significance. In the past 30 years, the catchment's land cover has changed significantly, which has resulted in instability, habitat fragmentation, and biodiversity loss. In this study, we evaluated land cover changes for the periods 1992, 2003, and 2021 using visual interpretation from ortho-photo maps to 18 CORINE Land Cover (CLC) standard classes. Area metrics such as class area (CA), number of patches (NP) and mean patch size (MPS) were employed in the analysis. Additionally, coefficients of anthropic impact (CAI) and ecological stability (CES) were computed to further evaluate the changes. The most significant change was related to deforestation. In 1992, coniferous forests represented 53.02% of the study area, but in 2021, it was 39.94%. It is related mainly to the increase of a transitional woodland/shrub class (change from 1.18% in 1992 to 14.08% in 2021). In addition, the area of new construction sites, sports, and leisure facilities was increased. Other changes concerned the decrease in alpine meadows or pastures were observed. Our results propose further trends and underpin the utmost importance for the sustainable management and protection of this unique catchment.

The choice of a spouse is not a random process. One of its important factors is the place of residence. The main goal of the study was to describe and identify trends in patterns of marital selection behaviour in Slovakia from the point of view of selected geographic characteristics of the spousesʼ place of residence. The obtained results generally confirm the persistence of moderate residential marital homogamy. Moreo- ver, compared to the beginning of the 1990s, its level has risen slightly. It is true that towards a higher administrative unit, the rate of residential marital homogamy in- creases. It turns out that persons living in municipalities, in urban areas, in the Prešov and Žilina regions, as well as in some border districts in the north and south of Slo- vakia, choose a spouse from the same environment more often. In the case of entering marriage with a person of foreign nationality, for both sexes, persons from Czechia have the highest share. In other cases, however, it is true that men more often choose a woman from the countries of the former “ Eastern Bloc ”, while women have a great- er preference for choosing a husband from countries west of the Iron Curtain.

Women mayors in the Slovak Republic in the last two decades: The municipalities size category perspective This paper presents the numeric representation of women mayors in 2,926 Slovak mu- nicipalities in the period 2002 – 2022, covering six election periods concerning the municipalitiesʼ size. The accelerating increase of women mayors is unveiled, but the municipalitiesʼ size matters. The paper examines the development of the share of wo - men mayors among municipal mayors in the Slovakia and focuses on the hypo - thesis, that there are fewer women mayors in larger municipalities. The woman mayor variable is examined regarding selected socio - economic, demographic, political, and geo- graphic variables employing logistic analysis. Results of the logit and probit models support the research hypothesis of the decrease in the number of women mayors with an increase in the municipalitiesʼ size. The negative relationship between the size category of the municipality and women mayors is caused by the higher share of women mayors in small municipalities, while with an increase in the size category of the municipality, women mayors became rare. It supports the expectation, that men still pre- dominate in the leadership of large municipalities.

Palaeomeander of the Rudava River (SW Slovakia) – an insight into the evolution of landscape and vegetation 鲁达瓦河(斯洛伐克西南部)的古测量仪-对景观和植被演变的洞察

Palaeomeander of the Rudava River (SW Slovakia) – an insight into the evolution of landscape and vegetation This study is focused on a cut - off palaeomeander of the Rudava River (SW Slovakia). Along its middle reach, Rudava passes through the extensive plain of Quaternary eolian sands covered with Scots Pine woodland. Specific landforms – semi - circled cut - bluffs (wagrams) are commonly found on either side of the river valley. They have been triggered by a meandering river in contact with both lower terraces and sand dune pseudoterrace and postgenously shaped by mass wasting. The left - bank palaeomeander and cut - bluff at river kilometre 13.2 is one of the most completely evolved and, until today, the best - preserved landforms of this kind. A palaeoecological study of the palaeomeander infill (two cores) combined with a digital elevation model, AMS radiocarbon dating, cartographic data analysis and a survey of present - day vegetation suggest the river meander was most probably cut - off in the 18th Cen- tury. Due to the flow hydrological regime, meandering dynamics at this reach is relatively slow. Numerous springs and seepage along the south edge of the river valley play an important role in the initiation and evolution of cut - bluffs. Also, at the site under study, such spring draining into the Rudava River has significantly contributed to the present - day variability of local soils, wood and marsh habitats. According to plant macrofossil records and ecogroups - based vegetative macrozones a riparian land- scape in the time of meander abandonment and earlier was much more open and with a markedly human impact. Probably upon the pastureʼs decline, the Holocene flood- plainʼs adjacent reach was completely reforested until the mid - 19th Century. Current hardwood alluvial woodland (of the association Ficario vernae - Ulmetum campestris ) originated in 1916 mainly from natural and perhaps artificial regeneration.

Specific landforms – semi - circled cut - bluffs (wagrams) are commonly found on either side of the river valley. They have been triggered by a meandering river in contact with both lower terraces and sand dune pseudoterrace and postgenously shaped by mass wasting. The left - bank palaeomeander and cut - bluff at river kilometre 13.2 is one of the most completely evolved and, until today, the best - preserved landforms of this kind. A palaeoecological study of the palaeomeander infill (two cores) combined with a digital elevation model, AMS radiocarbon dating, cartographic data analysis and a survey of present - day vegetation suggest the river meander was most probably cut - off in the 18th Cen- tury. Due to the flow hydrological regime, meandering dynamics at this reach is relatively slow. Numerous springs and seepage along the south edge of the river valley play an important role in the initiation and evolution of cut - bluffs. Also, at the site under study, such spring draining into the Rudava River has significantly contributed to the present - day variability of local soils, wood and marsh habitats. According to plant macrofossil records and ecogroups - based vegetative macrozones a riparian land- scape in the time of meander abandonment and earlier was much more open and with a markedly human impact. Probably upon the pastureʼs decline, the Holocene flood- plainʼs adjacent reach was completely reforested until the mid - 19th Century. Current hardwood alluvial woodland (of the association Ficario vernae - Ulmetum campestris ) originated in 1916 mainly from natural and perhaps artificial regeneration.","PeriodicalId":35652,"journal":{"name":"GEOGRAFICKY CASOPIS-Geographical Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70011741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper aims to verify whether setting up the system of investment incentives in Czechia has determined the over - proportional location of supported jobs to regions with an over - proportional size of unemployed and thus meets the declared objectives of regional policy. Concentration analysis on the territorial level of districts and regions NUTS III of the Czechia was used to fulfil this goal. Regions according to the concentration of unemployed and supported jobs can be divided into five basic types: T1 – regions where the support is well targeted and implemented (regions with high unemployment and job support), T2 – regions with inappropriately targeted support (regions with low unemployment and high support), T3 – regions that are not eligible for support and support is realised on low level (low unemployment and low support), T4 – regions where support is lacking (high unemployment and low support), T5 – regions that cannot be clearly classified (their position changes significantly over time). Regional policy objectives are achieved through support realised in regions with a large amount of unemployment. Setting up a system of investment incentives in Czechia does not ensure an above - proportional direction of supported investments to regions with a larger size of unemployment and thus does not meet the declared objectives of regional policy.
