The article examines considerations about the challenge of “critical physical geogra- phy” which spurs the cooperation of physical and human geographers in search of the solution to problems stemming from climate and environmental changes. The chal- lenge is associated with the adoption of geographical results in social practice and the consecutive acquisition of finances for research and education. In this context, the aim of the article is to draw attention to the integrating developmental conceptions in the geographical cognition in Slovakia and their continual relevance for scientific tenden- cies, political and social interests. Application of modern technologies (Geographical Information Systems and remote sensing) and databases about landscape (Copernicus Programme) is reflected in the participation of geographers in important national and international projects. These activities have also led to the development of methodolo- gy of scientific research and the modernisation of the educational process.

The Romanian sector of the Danube Valley covers a large area in which the life of resident communities is shaped by the river (1,075 km long). Exploring the links between the location of different ethnic minorities and the dwelling quality supposes to process and to map the statistical data provided by the National Institute of Statistics. Computing the final Dwelling Quality and Ethnic Diversity Indexes and mapping the secondary indexes offer the possibility to conclude that only two of the statistical variables assessing housing quality (dwellings connected to the water supply network and with a bathroom inside the house) show good statistical and territorial correlation with the share of Roma and Serbian minorities.

This article deals with current changes in mobility patterns and travel behaviour in the Czech Republic. The study is focused on the metropolitan hinterland of Prague. It is based on a detailed research of recent mobility patterns and transport behaviour in the administrative district of Benešov, which is located near Prague. This region was strongly influenced by the transformation of the spatial structure of the settlement system in the Czech Republic. As a result, there is a strong orientation on commuting to Prague. The study uses the database from last two population censuses to analyze the main spatial patterns of commuting to work and to schools in the district of Benešov between 2001 and 2011. The second part analyses current trends in transport behaviour of commuters based on a questionnaire survey. The study brings a few interesting results about the changing structure of spatial mobility and preferences of various transport modes as a part of complex transport behaviour.

Explaining emigration patterns in Estonia, and Slovakia The current paper contributes to the studies devoted to identifying the factors affecting emigration from CEE (Central and Eastern Europe), which are the EU member states to other EU states. In particular, the paper is focused on the factors affecting the emi- gration of the population from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia with Estoni-an, Lithuanian, Slovenian and Slovak citizenship respectively, to Germany as a desti- nation country with the highest number of migrants among all the EU countries during the period 1998 – 2016 with the use of fixed effects and OLS estimation methods. The paper contributes to the literature by an empirical analyses of the main economic determinants of emigration from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia to Germany.

dolina Slovakia The main objective of this contribution is to detect the morphogenetic processes by the numerical method of the differential geometry technique and compare the results with field surveying. The area of interest, the Vrátna dolina Valley, is located in the Malá Fatra Mountains in the northern part of Slovakia. Extensive mass movement deformations occurred in the surveyed area in 2014 induced by extreme precipitation events caused considerable damage. The Proxima software technology has been used to identify terrain elements using a precise digital terrain model (DTM) for the locali- sation of the debris flows head scarps. Precise DTM was derived from the airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. The morphometric analysis of landslide area was carried out on four selected locations. Verification of numerical mapping was performed by comparing results to the field survey data through visual comparison and area compu- tation. Supplementary data was used in the form of orthophoto mosaics. The used spatial analysis applied on ALS data shows a high coincidence with the detection of the head scarps by field surveying, particularly in the hard to access and afforested areas. The main advantage of this approach lies in the reduction of field surveying and in the possible detection of the terrain changes not found during field surveying.
