AbstractMasculinity in mass communication always attracts attention and is a hot topic of discussion. The masculinity of men who are always juxtaposed with women is a power struggle on two sides: men as men themselves and men compared to women. The study aims to counter the dominant masculinity issue in Avenger: The End Game (2018) movie. This study sheds light on the position of men in superhero films who are always dominant in masculinity. However, this film also shows declining male masculinity where men show their powerless side. This study was conducted with a descriptive qualitative method. Stuart Hall's representation theory and Chafetz's masculinity are the main theories to dissect male masculinity. Secondary data from other journals and books also supported the analysis. Finding and analysis finally show that men's powerless and men's emotions become male declining masculinity in this film.Keywords: communication, declining, domination, male, masculinity

Plaosan Temple is a building structure filled with beautiful ornaments and decorations, reliefs, and statues. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the metaphorical aspect of symbolism in the Plaosan temple reliefs, which represent Hindu and Buddhist ideologies. It also aims to understand the iconographic meaning of this structure as a temple building that unites differences for a peaceful purpose. This is a qualitative descriptive and interpretative research with the “minus one” technique used to determine the effect of removing an element of the temple. The hermeneutic-metaphorical interpretive description was used to visualize the ornaments’ symbols and determine the philosophical meaning between the ideological domain of Hindu symbolism and Buddhism. The results showed that the manifestation of love from the Plaosan temple is indicated in its temple’s relief elements and decorated ornaments.

This study aims to reveal the finalists’ learning patterns and outcomes at the 2018 Valerio International Guitar Festival. It is qualitative research with the phenomenological approach. It was conducted in the final round of the open category of the 2018 Valerio International Guitar Festival. The informants in this study include the finalists, judges, and organizers. The data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The research findings show that the music learning process among the finalists of the 2018 Valerio International Guitar Festival is carried out through lectures (formal), courses (non-formal), and community (non-formal). The learning patterns experienced by the finalists have shaped the competitive mentality of the finalists of the 2018 Valerio International Guitar Festival. The competitive mentality formed includes: (1) increasing repertoire mastery which reflects independence in achieving the target of mastery of the chosen repertoire that will be performed; and (2) the mentality to perform on stage in the competition arena. In this mentality, the finalists have high motivation when performing on the stage. The motivation that grows comes from within and outside the finalists. In addition, the finalists also have the mentality to be ready to face various possibilities that will be experienced, both in terms of musical and non-musical abilities, such as how to use the right strategy when facing the audience and maintain calm while playing.

Throughout the timeless centuries before the modern era, the people of the proud state of Kelantan enjoyed ‘Mak Yong,’ a traditional form of entertainment. The ‘Mak Yong’ performance brought the people together to view this folk dance-drama, largely because it was created by their ancestors and represented continuity and cultural heritage. This dance also served to heal illness, performed by mixed-gender entertainers. Significantly, this authentic performance was worldly inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. However, due to the interpretation of the politicized religious aspect of Kelantan state government, this performance was reconstructed by eliminating the female components. The new form of male Mak Yong was created. This research aims to discuss the contemporary issue of Kelantan Mak Yong and to propose the safeguarding method that compromises between culture and religion by reflecting the lessons learned from three participation anthropological fieldworks as a Mak Yong practitioner, a traditional dance-drama researcher, and a traditional dance-drama lecturer from 2014 until the present day. This study applied multi-disciplinary approaches such as performing arts and dance studies, anthropology, and gender analysis to investigate and collect the data. The results found that, instead of eliminating the female components, Kelantan Mak Yong can be utilized as a means for cultivating gendered behaviour, inculcating the religious doctrine, transmitting the moral-coded, and enhancing self-empowerment for Kelantan society by incorporating the guideline of the state arts policy (Dasar Kesenian Kelantan) to the performance’s components.

Keben for the Balinese is a medium that functions to package ceremonial facilities made of bamboo. Craftsmen in Kayubihi village, Bangli sub-district produce kebens with various designs of vernacular typography motifs that have the opportunity to be developed in the form of digital typefaces. This study aims to: (1) analyze the vernacular typographic design of the keben motif and its opportunities in the creation of digital typefaces; (2) analyze the meaning of keben in Kayubihi village in a socio-cultural context. Qualitative methods are used in this study. Typographic design principles consisting of legibility, readability, visibility, and clarity are used to analyze the vernacular typography of the keben motifs, while Saussure’s semiotic approach is used to give meaning to the keben of Kayubihi village from the spirit and the concept behind it. Data collection strategies were carried out by observation and interviews, online and offline. Meanwhile, data analysis was carried out by interpreting, namely interpreting in-depth the collected data according to the research objectives. The results show that the vernacular typography of the keben motifs was arranged alphabetically to form words as a symbol of identity. Geometric motifs inspired by the environment around the craftsmen can be classified into five groups: the sun, flowers, traditional fabrics, objects, and cultural symbols of Balinese Hinduism. These motifs can be developed into digital typefaces. Keben in Kayubihi village spiritually means creativity, preservation of culture and identity. This creativity can be used as a source of inspiration in designing typefaces that offer novelty. The vernacular typography design with the Keben motif is indigenous creativity, representing the identity of the local Balinese culture.

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.), a type of tropical plant that grows in Indonesia has various benefits and has been widely studied by various disciplines. The study of Tamarind as a source of ideas for art creation, on the other hand, has not been widely carried out. The aims of this study are: (1) To explain the process of creating Semarang batik motifs using the idea of Tamarind through the stylization of forms; (2) to analyze the shape of the Tamarind batik motif to strengthen the identity of Semarang’s local culture. This study uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to examine phenomena related to the creation process and the uniqueness of locality-based batik motifs on batik artisans in Semarang City. The data collection techniques used were observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies. The data that has been collected was analyzed interactively through data reduction, presentation, and conclusions with the scope of analysis in intra-aesthetic and extra-aesthetic studies. The results showed that: (1) Tamarind is a typical plant that is closely related to the toponym of the city of Semarang so it becomes a source of ideas for the creation of locality-based batik motifs through the stylization technique by Semarang batik artisans; (2) Visualization of the shape of the Tamarind batik motif that has been produced shows the diversity and uniqueness of the form as an aesthetic expression of the batik artisan in responding to the beauty of the natural and socio-cultural environment in Semarang City according to the level of knowledge and aesthetic experience. This research contributes to the batik artisan in exploring the diversity of local plant species as a source of ideas for creating environmentally-based batik motifs to strengthen the value of local cultural identity.

The tembang macapat can be classified using its cultural concepts of guru lagu, guru wilangan, and guru gatra. People may face difficulties recognizing certain songs based on the established rules. This study aims to build classification models of tembang macapat using a simple yet powerful Naïve Bayes classifier. The Naive Bayes can generate high-accuracy values from sparse data. This study modifies the concept of Guru Lagu by retrieving the last vowel of each line. At the same time, guru wilangan’s guidelines are amended by counting the number of all characters (Model 2) rather than calculating the number of syllables (Model 1). The data source is serat wulangreh with 11 types of tembang macapat, namely maskumambang, mijil, sinom, durma, asmaradana, kinanthi, pucung, gambuh, pangkur, dandhanggula, and megatruh. The k-fold cross-validation is used to evaluate the performance of 88 data. The result shows that the proposed Model 1 performs better than Model 2 in macapat classification. This promising method opens the potential of using a data mining classification engine as cultural teaching and preservation media.

People may face difficulties recognizing certain songs based on the established rules. This study aims to build classification models of tembang macapat using a simple yet powerful Naïve Bayes classifier. The Naive Bayes can generate high-accuracy values from sparse data. This study modifies the concept of Guru Lagu by retrieving the last vowel of each line. At the same time, guru wilangan’s guidelines are amended by counting the number of all characters (Model 2) rather than calculating the number of syllables (Model 1). The data source is serat wulangreh with 11 types of tembang macapat, namely maskumambang, mijil, sinom, durma, asmaradana, kinanthi, pucung, gambuh, pangkur, dandhanggula, and megatruh. The k-fold cross-validation is used to evaluate the performance of 88 data. The result shows that the proposed Model 1 performs better than Model 2 in macapat classification. This promising method opens the potential of using a data mining classification engine as cultural teaching and preservation media.","PeriodicalId":36152,"journal":{"name":"Harmonia: Journal of Arts Research and Education","volume":"105 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88035165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
