This article attempts to reconstruct the key segments of the events that took place at Lake Plav on December 25th, 1915, when 21 Serbian soldiers were executed by order of Colonel Aleksandar K. Stojšić. The source base for this research had to rely on the memoirs and recollections of contemporaries due to the limited mention of this topic in official military correspondence. This unprecedented event signaled the appearance of a new type of war related violence in the Serbian army. Besides the issues of desertion, violence and punishment in the armed forces, this article also discusses the notions of sovereignty and citizenship in times of extreme hardships of war during the Great Serbian Retreat. Many Serbian soldiers who left their units in late 1915 tried to defend themselves by saying that the “military oath” was invalid because Serbia was “abandoned” or “lost”. Such a situation forced the military authorities to try to regain their shaken authority by “negotiating discipline” under completely new circumstances.

This article deals with the analysis of the fundamental factors that contributed to the establishment of an extremely close Yugoslav-Burmese partnership during the first decades of the Cold War, a relationship which had a significant impact on shaping global non-alignment at the time. After gaining independence from colonial rule in Burma’s case or expulsion from one of the blocs in Yugoslav case, the strong desire of both countries to assume a position outside the direct control of the great powers and their efforts to establish an authentic socio-political system at home had a decisive influence, not only on the character of bilateral relations, but also on the strivings of the post-colonial and non-bloc worlds to find their own path in the world arena.

In many ways, socialist Yugoslavia’s tendency towards socialisation of some family functions and the establishment of a network of social institutions to take over parts of women’s reproductive work was affirmed. One of the tactics used to shift a number of domestic chores from the family to public institutions was the formation and promotion of household assistance services. Relying primarily on archival documentation, the article follows the Yugoslav experiences of building a service network, focusing on activity, user structure, basic problems and weaknesses, and the scope of social organisations for providing services to households in Yugoslavia’s capital. The main focus of the article is on the local practices of Belgrade’s services.

The paper reviews the recently published diary of Boris Muževič and earlier memoirs of former Slovenian communist officials. Along with selected archival sources, this literature is used to discuss the role of Muževič and his Slovenian colleagues in the events that preceded the breakup of Yugoslavia. In particular, the attention of the Slovenian politicians was moving from ideological to statehood issues over the period 1985–1989, while Muževič actively participated in escalation of conflicts in the Yugoslav communist leadership.

This essay is a review of Maria Falina’s book, which investigates the complex interaction between the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), nationalism, and politics in Yugoslavia during the interwar period. It delves into Maria Falina’s ideas, historical context, and various perspectives that she offers. Falina questions commonly held beliefs about the natural relationship between religion and Serbian nationalism, and digs into the SOC’s changing role as a political actor during a period of profound social and political change. Falina investigates the influence of people such as Nikolaj Velimirović and Justin Popović, the Church’s reaction to the Yugoslav state, religious competition, and modernity issues.

The paper analyzes the effects of medicines policy on the functional separation of pharmacy and drugstore businesses from the early 19th century to the Second World War. Attempts to maintain personal and professional interests in the delivery of medicines prompted the long-standing dispute between pharmacists and druggists over the control and trade of drugs and poisons. The issue of state control generated complex processes that emphasized the professional role of pharmacists as providers of pharmaceutical services and druggists as wholesalers of medicines.

This article seeks to provide an insight into the perception of female activism, the symbolic role of women and their future in the labor movement during the First World War, i.e. to show the imagined space that party and trade union bodies intended for women. The newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina (SDP BiH), Glas slobode (Voice of Freedom), will be used to analyze the category of gender and its representation in one of the sections of the international social democratic movement.

Dejan Djokić has written an important new book, a complete history of Serbs and Serbia from the initial Balkan migration to the present decades since the wars of Yugoslavia’s dissolution. Although one of the new Concise Histories from Cambridge University Press, covering this long history requires a long book. Well written and well argued, it balances the core of Serb identity against discontinuities. They range from Tsar Dušan’s over-expanded empire and Ottoman occupation to revolt and independence, followed by occupation in two world wars and inclusion in the two Yugoslavias.

Based on primary sources, relevant literature and contemporary press, the paper analyzes how the largest South American state, Brazil, was treated in foreign policy of the Yugoslav socialist regime. The moment of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1946 and the year in which diplomatic missions were elevated to the rank of embassies, along with the expansion of trade agreement (1952), were taken as the chronological framework. The article examines how the Cold War divisions, Yugoslav emigration to Brazil, and mutual trade influenced bilateral relations.
