This article explores the role of entrepreneurial foreign students in the entangled informal networks of the second economy in Romania during the 1980s by questioning an underexplored part of the distribution chain, namely the provision of commodities missing or in short supply which further fueled the black market. Using a network analysis that traced improbable connections, we identified an unexpected channel in the form of international trade fairs, seen here as potential occasions where informal links are most likely to be first realized. The case study figured the second economy as a transnational place where various actors competed in the generation of hard currency.

The paper traces the emergence and influence of a new movement in American historiography, the New History of Capitalism (NHC). Th e NHC is situated and analyzed in the broader context along with the development of historical science in the United States. Special emphasis placed by the NHC on the role of slavery in American economic development is examined. Concepts advanced by the NHC are scrutinized in light of the decades-long debates in American historiography considering the impact of slavery on the rise of capitalism, and the capitalist character of American slavery.

During the 1990s, informal trade – or šverc - was wide-spread in the former Yugoslav rump state. Th e following article conceptualizes the mechanisms behind the establishment of informal markets in light of ‘legal failure’ in Novi Pazar, Serbia, where informality produced an alternative, transnational connotation of belonging, leading to a ‘competition between law and social norms’. Trading thus served the purpose of a safety net that generated new and renewed social ties with the diaspora in Turkey, and the Turkish state writ large.

The main purpose of this case study is to describe how corruption scandals; its actors and actions are linguistically conceptualized by the Serbian public word usage. The Agrokomerc scandal that was investigated from 1987 to 1989 in former Yugoslavia will serve as an example to show what kind of vocabulary as well as discourse-specific metaphors were used to describe the corruption scandal in the Serbian mass media. For this purpose, a text corpus was created that contains 137 articles from the Serbian newspaper Politika. The selected articles address the corruption scandal “Agrokomerc”. Data-driven, corpus linguistic methods will be used for this case study. This method enables the identification of concrete lexical units that can be further interpreted and used in a wider and interdisciplinary context.

Several German Roma-Sinti families, members of a caravan of traveling artists, set off from central Germany to Istanbul, passing through the war-torn Balkans during 1942 to the end of January 1943 when they were arrested and transferred to the Red Cross camp in Niš. A few months later they were transferred to the Anhaltelager Dedinje in Belgrade (Banjički camp) from where, they were transported to the “Gypsy Camp” of Auschwitz in late June. Following the fate of this group of Roma (i. e. Sinti), the paper also discusses the racist policy of the National Socialist regime towards Roma and Sinti with the final consequence – their mass physical destruction, genocide (Pharrajmos).

The topic of this article, mostly based on the materials of the Military Archive and the Historical Archive of Belgrade, is the analysis of the private and everyday life of members of the Serbian State Guard. As in similar formations, the life of its members was strictly conditioned by its character, which meant that privacy was largely under the control of superior officers and the Command itself. This was especially true during the occupation, when the occupying authorities played a significant role in controlling the overall activities of the Guardsmen.

The article deals with the issue of informal practices in Yugoslavia using examples of these practices in trade with Italy in the 1960s and early 1970s. Th e subject of the analysis is the re-export activity of Yugoslav companies, and various other illegal activities used by companies to achieve a better placement of their goods in another country, regardless of whether the state tacitly supported these activities or fought them. Th e research is based on documents from the Archive of Yugoslavia, media sources and literature.

The current conflict in Ukraine and the troubled course of its relations with Russia since declaring independence in 1991 has encouraged speculation and misinformation about the longer history of their relationship. These two new books by leading historian of Ukrainian and Russian history provide last chapters with informed accounts of relations since 1991. Their primary concerns and the bulk of their books are devoted to the much longer histories and complex relations from the Tsarist centuries through the Soviet period.
