"The purpose of the research is to offer a three-dimensional examination of a chosen population’s make-up, examining ethnicity, native language, and religious denomination during the 20th century in the Romanian Bihor County. This paper examines the changing process of how identity in Érselénd/Șilindru was influenced by outside forces coming from different social, political, religious, and even economic directions. The village was chosen, as it was originally a Ruthenian-speaking Greek Catholic settlement that moved to the Hungarian Kingdom centuries ago. They kept their religious identity but became Hungarian-speaking people. Then, during the twentieth century, this homogenous settlement, due to external political, historical, and economic influences, experienced a profound change to a degree that had not been predicted. However, this fragmentation into various Christian denominations, the changes of language and ethnic identity clearly demonstrates the complex history of the geopolitical region of Partium, Romania. Keywords: Greek Catholics, identity change, Ruthenians, minority, religion, ethnicity, Partium "

"Jenő Sebestyén (1884–1950), the Historical Calvinism, and the Soli Deo Gloria Student Alliance. This paper aims to give an introduction into the origins of Jenő Sebestyén’s theological movement, the “Historical Calvinism”, while it discusses Sebestyén’s formative role in the creation and later development of the Soli Deo Gloria Student Alliance (SDG). Historical Calvinism can be understood as the Hungarian adaptation of Abraham Kuyper’s (1837–1920) Neo-Calvinism. Following Dutch examples, Sebestyén inspired his students, especially Zoltán Töltéssy (1900–1932), at the Budapest Reformed Seminary to form a confessional-minded student movement in order to serve the evangelization of the Youth and the spiritual renewal of the Reformed Church in Hungary in the 1920s. Soon, the SDG would become widely popular among high school and university students, attain the support of the church officials, and pursue many debates with the inter-confessional student missionary organizations. Zoltán Töltéssy

This article reflects on the Reformed theology and practice of infant baptism from an intercultural and ecumenical perspective. It looks at the socio-cultural and ecumenical context in which the Reformed theology and practice of infant baptism emerged, and the current Dutch context in which infant baptism is practiced and the appropriation of the Reformed theology and practice of infant baptism in the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (lib.). It then examines the ecumenical questions around the practice of ‘re-baptism’, and makes a distinction between re-baptism as related to joining an Evangelical or Baptist church, and re-baptism of Reformed believers, who remain members of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands (lib.). Finally, the article weighs the questions and topics on the future of the Reformed theology and practice of infant baptism in the Netherlands, especially against the background of the ecumenical conversation with Evangelical and Baptist Christians.

Christian baptism is a so-called concentrated practice; soteriology, ecclesiology and spirituality come together in this central Christian sacrament. Many questions surround the practice of baptism in a late-modern secularised Dutch society. For example, how is classic Reformed theology received in contemporary congregations? We asked four ministers to write a reflection on issues that are significant in the practice of baptism in their congregations. This article reports on their reflections and points to three areas in which the practice of baptism in contemporary Reformed churches needs further theological work: the didactic structure of Reformed baptismal practices, the divergence between personal spirituality and the pivotal notion of ‘covenant’ in Reformed theology, and the inherent theological understanding of the reality of salvation in relation to baptismal practices.

This article provides an overview of the motif of baptism in Luke-Acts. It argues that Luke presents the baptism of John as a particular kind of Jewish purification rite, that is, as a purification that accompanies a changed way of life and that prepares the people of Israel for the coming of the Lord. In Acts, Luke emphasizes the continuity between the baptism of John and baptism in the name of Jesus. Both are baptisms of repentance and both prepare for the eschatological coming of the Lord. At the same time, differences can be seen between both baptisms: after Easter, according to Acts 18-19, the baptism of John is no longer sufficient. The conclusion links the findings to current debates on baptism in reformed churches. The practice of infant baptism has its value, but risks losing the biblical emphasis on the new way of life expected of the baptized.

This article offers a survey of recent scholarship partly occasioned by the commemoration of the death of Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) and Herman Bavinck (1854-1921). Next to the digital disclosure of the archives and some biographical works, the attention for Kuyper’s political and societal views and Bavinck’s dogmatic and philosophical legacy among Anglophone theologians is striking. The lasting relevance of Dutch neoCalvinism appears to lie especially in its ability to deal with plurality in society and to apply the orthodox Reformed tradition to the contemporary (post)modern context.

Where fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets is a leading theme in Matthew, Scripture itself can be considered as Jesus’ ‘Sender’, thereby providing a key to reading Jesus’ first and last words. The fulfilment of ‘all righteousness’ (Matt. 3.15) primarily refers to therighteousness of Scripture, and the concluding Mission Commandment refers to the fulfilment of Law and Prophets. This theological double theme argues for a double role for the apostles who are called righteous ones and prophets, a role which might function as a new, meaningful exegetical perspective on the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, where Jesus’ disciples are blessed as righteous and prophets.

This article analyzes the numerical growth of the Gereformeerde Bond (GB), one of the largest groups of reformed Christians in the Netherlands, by calculating the number of its adherents on the basis of ministers shared by local congregations associated with the GB. A period of modest growth in the 1970s and 1980s is followed by a rapid decline: in 2015 the total number of adherents is approximately half that of 1973. This decline in adherents per congregations starts earlier and is more substantial than that of local congregations with at least one GB minister. The emergence of the Hersteld Hervormde Kerk played only a minor role in this process. Compared to all reformed denominations in the Netherlands, the decline in membership of the GB is larger.
