Steam turbine for the main feed water pump (MFP) drive is a low power turbine, for which energy power losses and energy efficiency analysis are presented in this paper. The MFP steam turbine analysis has been performed within a wide range of turbine loads. The influence of steam specific entropy increment of the real (polytropic) steam expansion upon the MFP turbine energy power losses and energy efficiency has been investigated. During all the observed loads MFP steam turbine energy power losses were in the range between 346.2 kW and 411.4 kW. The MFP steam turbine energy power losses and energy efficiency were most significantly influenced by the steam specific entropy increment. Change in the steam specific entropy increment is directly proportional to the change in MFP turbine energy power losses, while the change in the steam specific entropy increment is reversely proportional to the MFP turbine energy efficiency change. For the observed turbine loads, the MFP steam turbine energy efficiency was in the range between 46.83% and 51.01%.

During installation activities of four platforms in the Italian sector of the northern Adriatic Sea, in addition to the technical performance, special attention had to be dedicated to the protection of marine mammals from the noise produced. Acoustic and visual methods were applied 24 hours a day during the months of installation to monitor the movement of marine mammals. Project installation activities, especially piling and mooring, raise underwater noise level concentrated in a relatively limited area, which can interfere with the normal life of marine mammals. The goal of the research conducted in the framework of this paper is to describe the working methodology, the measures of marine mammals’ protection and to present the final monitoring results.

The paper brings an overview of all the Conferences on Marine Technology held so far – in memory of academician Zlatko Winkler. It gives the description of the entire Conference genesis, from the very idea and aims to the preparation and realization of each of the seven Conferences. Numerical data on Conferences are displayed in tables as well as the structure of their respective Organizing and Executive Committees.

Under the influence of the global economic crisis, many shipping companies have been forced to sell their old and poorly prospective vessels and change their business strategy in order to survive on the market. The purpose of this scientific paper is to present a change in business strategy within shipping companies aimed at adapting to current needs of the trade market. The analysis of the role and features of strategic management in business operation of modern shipping companies is carried out in this paper with the aim of identifying and analysing those factors that affect the creation of business strategies and the need of shipping companies to adapt to the market. In the empirical part, business strategy of the largest Croatian shipping company, Tankerska plovidba d.d. (Plc.) of Zadar, has been explored and analysed, along with that of Stena Ltd., one of the largest global shipping companies, which represents a business sphere created through a multiple merger of shipping companies into one, with the purpose of increasing competitiveness on the market.

Studies have shown that vessel collisions have been identified as one of the most frequent type of accidents. According to some authors, the main reason for that is the lack of understanding or a wrong interpretation of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. For the purpose of this paper, the answers of 625 respondents who participated in the research that was a part of the Avoiding Collisions at Sea project were analysed. The purpose of the project was to improve learning methods of COLREGs within the study programmes as well as to improve knowledge and understanding of seafarers. For the purpose of this paper the answers of respondents with some experience at sea were analysed; 60 of them have served on vessels that had participated in collisions. The authors have studied areas where collisions occurred. Besides, competences prescribed by the STCW Convention, which refer to International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, teaching methods, methods for demonstrating competences and criteria for evaluating competences, were analysed as well. The answers obtained from 66 lecturers of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea were analysed and compared to the answers of other respondents in order to determine the most efficient teaching methods and to suggest methods of improvement, which is the primary purpose of this paper.

The adoption of the new Concessions Act in 2017 provoked significant reactions within the Croatian public. Reactions were basically related not to the procedural, but to the sectoral regulation: Maritime Domain and the Seaports Act. Namely, according to the media, practice has shown that concession holders have often violated their powers by restricting the general use of the maritime domain. Since it is difficult for an average and even legally instructed person to determine the scope of rights a concessionaire or a concessionary approval holder is awarded on the maritime domain, we would propose that notice boards be introduced that would provide a 2D-bar code for more detailed information concerning the concessionaire or the concessionary approval holder. With a minimal cost, this would significantly increase the transparency of activities carried out on the maritime domain.

Traditional transformers have an important role and a long history of use in shipboard power distribution systems. The introduction of fully integrated electrical propulsion systems and other high power nonlinear loads onboard modern vessels, together with increased number of ports with high voltage shore connection systems, causes considerable power quality issues which also affect the operation and the design process of traditional power transformers. Some of the challenges and shortcomings of conventional transformers can be partially overcome by using solid state transformers (SST). Thanks to the availability of advanced power semiconductor devices capable of handling medium voltage levels, there is a significant growth in the use of the SST technology in the smart-grid and traction application. This paper has analysed the possibility of SST implementation on ships.

The Zadar Port System includes a series of ports and harbours of both the local and county importance, as well as of the national strategic importance. Year after year it has been recording good results in all its elements. However, it should be noted that the most significant growth has been recorded in sectors of nautical tourism and fisheries. Due to limited capacities and the recorded growth of the annual turnover in all the fields, the tendency is to develop the Zadar port system by improving any existing services and expanding by adding new ones. The aim is the integration into the system through diversification of services and enhancement of competitiveness on both the domestic and international markets. This paper has examined the status of existing infrastructure, traffic connections, yearly turnover and strategies for the future development that are meant to serve the purpose of enhancing competitiveness through the concept of integrating all the elements into the whole with the aim of ensuring unlimited possibilities of future development with regard to the geographical position and the needs of future users.

Croatia is one of the major Mediterranean destinations for nautical tourism owing to its countless attractions, indented coastline, numerous islands, climatic and other advantages. An important factor for achieving a full development potential is the availability of infra- and supra-structure, which is reflected through investments in new marinas, anchorages and other facilities. The article analyses accommodation capacities of ports for nautical tourism in Croatia. The authors give an overview of the current situation with an emphasis on the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar. The purpose of this article is to analyse the growing need for accommodation capacities in nautical tourism ports and to point to the importance of building new marinas and berths, especially for boats long between 12 and 15 meters.

Due to its geographical situation, the port of Ploče has become a junction of land and sea routes within the Transport Corridor Vc, as a part of the Mediterranean Transport Corridor, passing through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Hungary. The paper deals with the analysis of the connecting roads leading from the port of Ploče as well as with the evaluation of the respective road traffic volume. Although the congestion on certain road sections is related to the tourist transit traffic, the road traffic volume at the Transport Corridor Vc within Bosnia and Herzegovina indicates the need for the construction of a motorway to stretch out the Corridor. The planned modernisation will fundamentally improve the main road infrastructure on the Transport Corridor Vc that will facilitate the transport of goods and enable shorter travel time from the port of Ploče to the hinterland. Considering that the major portion of the freight transport from the port of Ploče uses road transport services, the envisaged modernisation will significantly increase competitiveness of the port, mostly due to the intermodal transport mode.
